Prompt: Lost Soul

As small and pale as it was, the flickering flame-like glow was nearly blinding to eyes that had become accustomed to the bleakness of a seemingly endless night and Kagome hissed in pain at the sudden luminescence.

Rapidly blinking to rid her vision of the spots currently wrecking havoc with her vision, Kagome couldn’t shake the feeling of déjà vu that the sight of this light seemed to evoke, and yet for the life of her she couldn’t remember why it should inspire such a sense of familiarity.

So consumed was she by this puzzle that it took her a moment to realize that although she had started to walk toward the writhing blue luminosity, her steps had brought her no closer to her desired destination.

The former miko stopped walking and began looking around in confusion, for the first time noticing the distinct lack of shadows being cast by the glow.

She had been right then; this dark empty place was definitely not Dr Takabayashi’s office. But that begged the question, ‘Just where the hell am I, and how did I get here?’

Kagome was no stranger to strange and unusual occurrences, but there had been a complete lack of such events in the recent years of her life.

So why was it that she found herself in this situation now? Unlike her time in the Sengoku Jidai she had nothing of value to offer any malevolent force; she also had no defense against any such force.

Her hands itched for the feel of a bow in her hands, and the warmth and security of her friends at her side, in this frigid, dismal place.

That’s when it hit her like bolt of lightning straight from the Kami themselves, she knew why that light, no not light she corrected herself, why that fire was so familiar to her.

All fear and doubt retreated as she ran forward with a burst of excitement toward the illumination brightening the emptiness around her; the flame promising to return her lost soul to its rightful home.
