Chapter 9: Look-a-Likes

“We’re lost.”

The hallways looked the same, the other shoji doors inaccessible. Sesshomaru didn’t say anything, though he was getting ticked that this was turning out to be some sort of never-ending maze. He felt they been through this forked path a dozen times, picking either right or left when they came across it. He knew the main shrine couldn’t be that big, they should have came across the exit a long time ago.

Kagome looked at her watch. It read ten-forty-five. They have been here for nearly an hour. Her feet were hurting but they weren’t blistering enough to take her shoes off, especially since there was a thick layer of dust everywhere.

“We should take left.”

“We’ve been taking lefts and rights for the past couple times… we’re getting nowhere.” She sighed, taking off her pointed hat as the wig she was wearing was grating on her nerves. She scratched underneath the white false hair, relieving her from the constant itching before placing her hat back on. “We’re gonna die here.”

“Don’t be foolish.” Sesshomaru scoffed, he wasn’t about to rot away in this house. If Kagome wanted to give up, that was on her.

“We’re never gonna get out of here, Sesshomaru.”

“Be realistic, if our parents found out we have disappeared they would come searching for us.” He told her. “Besides, this would be the first place they would look at since Inuyasha was bragging about it yesterday.”

“I don’t want to wait here, I want to get out now.” She was acting a bit childish, but after coming across several weird and spooky things, she didn’t give a damn. Her nerves were out of whack and this dust was making her eyes watered, and overall, it didn’t put her in a good mood. Not even with Sesshomaru keeping her company.

“Neither do I, but obviously that’s not possible at the moment.”

It was quiet for a couple seconds before Kagome opened her mouth again. “Can we take a break, we’ve been walking nonstop.”

“Do as you please.”

Kagome placed her lantern on a table near the wall--she had a feeling it was the same table she have seen for the past couple times--and leaned against it, taking off one heel while balancing on the other to massage her poor toes. She grimaced when she was forced to slide her foot back in, the discomfort of having her toes stuffed in a confined space sent trembles throughout her leg. She repeated with the other, and then heaved herself on the sturdy table, setting on it, not caring that her bottom was going to be covered with dust.

She took out the old photograph after giving Sesshomaru a glance to see what he was doing. After seeing that he was merely leaning against the wall, she took out the old photograph she picked up earlier.

It was strange how almost every person there had their face missing, like it was naturally taken like that. She traced her finger over each figure, stopping at the little girl smiling shyly at the camera. Was this the girl that had that deadly invisible friend?

“What are you looking at?”

Kagome looked up, noticing Sesshomaru standing awfully close to her as he peered at the picture. “I’ve found it after that… thing went away. I think it purposely dropped it.”

“The girl has similar features as you.” Sesshomaru commented. They were eerily similar, the only thing different was that Kagome was older.

“Maybe.” Poor kid, she probably became a lost soul after her entire family was killed, but she didn’t like how Sesshomaru was saying she looked like her. They didn’t look alike at all.

“Come on, we need to go now.” With that said, Sesshomaru walked ahead, leaving Kagome to gather her thoughts. She wondered if she really looked like this little girl, she hoped not.

“Never again.” Shippou grumbled, sitting on the dirty ground as he waited for Inuyasha to wake up after fainting. He pulled out his cell phone, groaning when the battery life flickered even though he haven’t used it once, not that he could since he received no signal in this place.

He flicked the older male’s ear. “Wake up, you wimp!”

Nothing happened, just more snoring. He dropped his head to his hands, feeling a headache forming now. They were never going to get out of this place if Inuyasha didn’t wake up soon and he wasn’t about to drag his body, his little scrawny arms would break off or something.

He was heavy.

If only his stupid phone worked, then he wouldn’t be stuck sitting here in boredom. He could have been playing some games until the idiot woke up, he could be leveling up on Candy Crush.

Something fell a little ways down causing a squeak to escape from his lips. Shippou held his lantern up, glancing around with frightened eyes of what could be lurking around. He felt his little heart would explode if something else popped up, he would be fainting like the big oaf before him.

He jumped when another item fell. This suspense was killing him, it would be stupid if he got up and searched or stayed in place. It was always like that in horror movies. But there was no escaping this place, their only exit was blocked off and Inuyasha was unconscious.

Another fell, this time sounding closer. And then another one and another one, falling a couple feet away from them. He gulped, nervously raising his eyes up.

He was looking at a horribly burnt face.

Sango groaned, her head feeling heavy. She wondered what happened, one minute she was with Miroku and the next she was laying on this dirty ground. And then she remembered, those cold small hands grasping her back.

She opened her eyes, only to she pitch blackness. Did their candles gone out? Shakily rising to a sitting position, she felt around.

“Miroku?” She called out, her hands not coming across anything. Did he leave her? Righteous anger coursed through her. Why the hell would he leave her? “Miroku, you better not have left me or you would be in a world of hurt.” She whispered to herself.

Crawling on hands and knees, her hand brushed against fabric. It felt familiar, she would have known as she have been grasping the same material the entire time they have been here. Taking out her cell phone and huffing when the flickering battery life peered at her, she held it out and gasped. Miroku was laying unconscious.

“My gods, Miroku wake up.” Sango grasped his head in her hands, whipping back the wisps of lock that laid plastered against his cold skin. She placed to fingers against his pulse of his neck, sighing in relief that felt strong and steady. Nothing was wrong with him, he was merely unconscious. But what made him unconscious?

The light of her phone flickered off causing her to frown. When she pressed the home button to light the area once more, she could see why Miroku fainted.

Across from them was a disfigured child, glaring at her with drool dripping down from his gapping mouth. He was on all fours, his legs higher than his upper limbs but both equally crooked and broken. She couldn’t even scream when it screeched and jumped at her.
