Chapter 4: The First Link

Inside was very dusty, as they stepped along, the clear imprint of their footsteps were easily seen. It must have been a while since anybody was here, Kagome mused. Which brought her back to the dilemma about the lanterns. Who exactly placed those there as inside showed no other invasions. It was puzzling and she dared admit it, a bit spooky. She stepped closer to Sesshomaru, finding him a source of protection as they looked around the large space, glancing at old calligraphy from times before. It was a shame objects such as these were rotting inside this abandoned shrine.

“Did you hear that noise?” Kagome whispered, her voice nearly echoing.

“It was probably the wind.” Sesshomaru mindlessly stated, to preoccupied with a painting to really pay any attention to peculiar noises and whatnot. Kagome pouted, tugging down her hat, glancing at her watch to see the time. Only a couple minutes passed and she felt time was going awfully slow and she wanted to leave the place immediately.

“Did you hear it this time?” A rustle was heard from above, slinking and creeping over creaky floor boards. How can Sesshomaru not hear that? It was as clear as day.

“I hear nothing, Kagome.” His response felt close to something that would have been said in horror film, where the male would ignore all the signs that there was someone paranormal amongst them and the female was the only who had a clue. She didn’t want this experience to be like that, that would be overwhelmingly creepy.

“It sounded like footsteps.” She tried to convince him, knowing what she heard, she hoped that he would believe her, it was loud enough.

“This building is old, it is going to make noise.”

“So it’s going to make realistic noises like someone’s walking across wooden floors?” She sarcastically asked, crossing her arms as she glared at him. “And can you take your damn mask off, how can you possible see anything?”

“Are you fussing?”

That question made her pause and blanched, before a heated sensation bloomed, causing her to be unbearably hot despite the chilled atmosphere. She was fussing, and he wasn’t even her boyfriend. Maybe all this creepiness was getting to her, making her say weird things and make differently. She wasn’t scared, just skeptical of this situation.

Good thing her green face paint hid her blush.

“Whatever, let’s just get this over with so I could go home.” They wandered further into the room and they jumped when a loud bang resounded behind them, the heavy doors of the shrine closing on them. Kagome didn’t want to approach the door, not when her heart felt like it was going to burst through her chest.

“The wind.” Sesshomaru reminded her again, not at all phased after knowing what made the door close on them and continued down the dusty room to a set of shoji doors. He didn’t wait for her as he disappeared behind them, traveling left as the faint glow of his lantern shined through the rotten, thinned walls. Kagome squeaked, rushing forward, nearly slipping on the dirty ground with her heeled shoes as she struggled to catch up with Sesshomaru. She couldn’t believe he would left her alone, it would have been gentlemanly if he grasped her arm and helped her along, but he left her to fend for herself.

Why do I like him again? With a shake of her head, she finally caught up with his long strides, the edges of her black dress scrapping against the floor, gathering the gray dust. They were quiet for a couple minutes, each looking at the objects inside the halls; it was unusually cluttered. A tingling of her nose made her aware of the upcoming sneeze, and she did, blowing a large dust cloud when she was bent over some platters. After waving the dust away form her face, she grasped the platter, looking at herself clearly now in the reflection, and was annoyed that her make-up was covered lightly with the dust cloud that flew into her face. She should known better than to dress as a witch this evening, it was too much work, even though she wanted to outshine anyone else who chose to costume themselves as witches as well.

Kagome gasped, turning behind her as she thought something was standing just inches from her, staring at her with a deadly gaze. She spotted nothing, only emptiness as she swung her lantern around, hoping to illuminate the entire vicinity. Maybe her vision was playing tricks on her, or the aspects of Halloween causing hallucinations to appear or she was thinking scary things that made her think something was there. She took a deep breath, her heart pounding frantically as she tried to calm herself from hyperventilating.

“Sesshomaru…”

“What is it?” He was standing besides her, he couldn’t possibly have seen what she just saw. He was too busy shifting through items to pay any attention to her. She rather him keep looking at the objects than have him see her act crazy about something that was not there to begin with.

“Er… nothing, I thought I saw something…” Maybe it was her mind playing tricks, she wanted to be reassured with that thought. She couldn’t have possibly seen a pale figure standing behind with wide obsidian eyes and matted hair, their mouth splattered with a dark color.

Was Miroku story true? She shook her head, it wasn’t possible. Anything paranormal didn’t exist, it wasn’t probable. But how can she explain what she saw, who was that? A shiver went down her body, not from the cold but as if someone or something was watching her from the shadows. She huddle closer to Sesshomaru, looking at the dark hallway with apprehensive eyes. Maybe she was scaring herself, making her think of things that could jump out at her.

But she couldn’t shake the weird vibe off, like her soul knew something was terribly wrong with the place, protesting loudly as they continued their way. Hopefully it was her imagination, that nothing was truly there.
