Best I Never Had by Aviel

Disclaimer: Though it saddens me to say it, I don’t own anything relating to Takahashi-sensei’s Inuyasha. However, the plot and/or ideas of this drabble series do belong to me, and a nod of recognition goes to the creator of this challenge.
A/N: None. :)
Chapter 5: Tests
The only piece of advice he had ever given to his half-brother had backfired in his face.
Do not accept human aid even in death.
How did Inuyasha think he could pose a threat when he couldn’t even unlock the abilities of the Tessaiga himself? That he’d had to rely on the human female to fight his battles for him? The daiyoukai had deliberately chosen to hold back, but she had proven herself to be more stubborn and loyal than he’d first believed. Though her overall power was incomparable to his own, the priestess had shattered his armor and dared to ignore his warning. He had thought himself generous with his rare show of mercy for the girl, yet she had once again decided to help the worthless pup, getting in the way where she wasn’t needed.
He had wanted to punish her for defending his brother–trusting him to see to her protection. But even as his Wind Scar had raced toward the girl, he’d found himself somewhat relieved when Inuyasha had taken the hit instead, ultimately rendering her unconscious.
. . .
The next time he’d encountered the Inutachi, Inuyasha had become Totosai’s champion. That being said, the dragon’s arm he’d borrowed should have made quick work of the situation and ensured his victory. Unfortunately, he hadn’t counted on Inuyasha being able to unleash the Wind Scar while completely blind. Tessaiga’s devastating energy had wrapped around his body in ribbons of gold before Tenseiga saved his life.
It was the closest he’d ever come to death and the first time he’d felt immensely humbled by the late Dog General’s mighty strength. He grudgingly admitted that this altered his perspective when he later came across the orphan girl and conducted his “test”.
The overwhelming stench of wolves had nothing to do with it.
