So Strange by Shadow

Doesn't Matter to Me

Author Note: I do not own Inuyasha. I hope it was alright to include the song lyrics that inspired this little blurb of a fanfiction. This is the first time I've posted on dokuga.

if you are near to the dark
I will tell you 'bout the sun
you are here, no escape
from my visions of the world
you will cry all alone
but it does not mean a thing to me

knowing the song I will sing
till the darkness comes to sleep
come to me, I will tell
'bout the secret of the sun
it's in you, not in me
but it does not mean a thing to you

-          Aura Yuki Kajiura

She was an oddity; he long decided that his half-brother’s companion was a strange woman. It was not her time, her place from the future that made it strange. No he suspected even in her proper time she was quite strange. The priestess Kagome was just naturally odd. Perhaps some might say it was her purity that made her forgive his brother’s crass behavior and wrongs to her person. Or her naivety, her loving heart. Perhaps it was being from the future that allowed her to accept all manner of species into her soul, to let that undead abomination walk the earth with half her soul. A plethora of sources could be listened but he personally thought it was because she was odd. A strange little woman with a too big heart, never ending smile and too quick temper.

If you watched his brother’s pack it was easy to see what kept them together, not even his brother could deny Kagome’s importance to the coherence of his group. However the woman herself did not see it this way. She lived in the dark of her own light. Such a strange girl. Sitting in the branches of a high tree he watched the woman picking herbs, his brother lay wounded not far from her the slayer beside him. They had run into Naraku’s latest creation a ghastly beast with spider legs and venomous spit. It was the girl’s arrow that struck down the beast but instead of praise his fool brother berated her for stealing his kill only to fall to the poison in his wounds. Such a moron.

“Lord Sesshomaru.” His golden eyes drifted back down to the woman crouched amongst the weeds. “Why do you watch us?” She stood brushing off her knees looking up at him smiling that little smile of hers as she waited for his response. He stared back at her for a long moment until she shrugged and walked off letting him know he was welcome to join them for supper. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes.

Some months passed before he saw her again. He was tracking Naraku when he caught her scent on the wind. Blood accompanied it; curiosity had him follow the smell to its source finding her hiding in a cave trying to wrap her own wounds. He stood there silent as the forest around them watching her struggle to save her life. She was weak and untrained, but still when she saw him she only smiled. Such a strange little creature. Stepping into the cave he helped her care for her wounds taking off his pelt to let her lay on it as he started a fire to keep her warm through the night.

“Lord Sesshomaru? Why do you help me?” Glancing at her he watched her dark eyes blink slowly, she was weary. “I am a human…” He shrugged elegantly and looked off into the darkness.

“Go to sleep Kagome.” He did not want to answer her quandaries, her opinion and fears did not matter to him. He heard her give a whimper as she tried to settle glancing at her he saw the tear slip down her cheek, he did not move. She would cry all alone for she was not his to comfort.

She woke not much later, pain keeping and nightmares keeping her from rest. Wincing a bit she turned to see Sesshomaru leaning against the wall of the cave. He was an enigma she had not even begun to figure out. Why did he watch her? Why did he help her? In the past he tried to kill her and Inuyasha so many times. Had little Rin changed his heart so much? Struggling she stood up watching him for a long moment his eyes were closed though she knew he was well aware of her movements. He reminded her of a song, his way of treating people and the way he treated her and Rin.

She glazed out the cave looking over the dark forest, Naraku had attacked them again, wounding her and separating her from her friends. She did not know what happened to them, if they were looking for her or not. Naraku’s goons chased her for hours through the dense forest until they finally gave up believing she would succumb to her injuries, she would have if she had not had her pack with her. Her eyes strayed to Sesshomaru once again. Not only did he help her tend to her injuries but he stayed to watch over her. Contradictory to all this kindness he had not comforted her when she cried, not that she thought he would. She just couldn’t figure out this man, he was so strange.

“Lord Sesshomaru.” Calling to him softly watching his eyes open and turn molten pools to her face. “Why did you help me?” She knew he would not answer, he never did. At this point she was not sure why she asked perhaps a part of her hoped he would. Hoped he would help her put together the puzzle of his personality and peer into his thoughts by giving her a response to her many questions.

As always he just watched her silently, she sighed softly. “I’m just a human, why do you help me? Even if you do not hate humans, I am friends with Inuyasha and you do dislike him.” Turning her eyes to him once more watching him silently. She felt like she was talking to herself, were it not for his intense stare she would think he was not listening to her.

“Go to sleep Kagome.” The same response she got earlier she sighed laying back down gingerly and going to sleep.

Sesshomaru watched her fall back asleep turning to look back out at the forest. He would guard her heart from the world. She could not see her light, her strange sun in this world of death and darkness but that did not matter to him. He would protect it.
