Out On a Limb
Out On a Limb
Sometimes she wished life would give her a warning, like in the movies of the horror genre, where an eerie music played to let someone know something was about to happen.
But it seemed to be one of those moments when they wind themselves tightly in a situation and only disappoint themselves in the end when nothing was out of place and then relaxes, caving into the false sense of security.
That was how it was with her and it was frustratingly ridiculous.
But it was exactly like that.
The room was empty, only a small candle lit the area.
This didn’t satisfied her nerves. If she had spotted someone behind the desk then she would have felt better, but no one was there.
Looking around, she called out. “H-hello?” She cleared her throat when she stuttered over the word, her throat feeling as if she swallowed something large.
Her hair was in disarray, a bird nest when she ran her clammy fingers through the knotted locks, a nervous habit she unknowingly developed. A noise cluttered nearby, causing her to flinch.
It was outside.
Damn it! She shouted in her mind as another scream echoed. Whoever that is, needs to stop screaming, it’s scaring me to death! She knew whoever it was couldn’t help it and she chided herself. She was stalling when someone needed her help.
She learned her lesson some time ago not to make hasty decisions that she would regret. However, all rational thoughts left her mind when a child-like whimper came just outside the door and she hurriedly slid it open, apathetic to the consequences when it came to saving a child.
But she wished she didn’t have a caring bone in her body once her eyes caught a glimpse of what stood outside the inn.
