Partial Truths

“How long has this been going on?”

The room was dark, only the scant light from a small candle shined within. After introducing themselves, she guessed there was about twenty inside the room. It was mostly women and children. The protector of the group said there were other hideouts throughout the village, which brought her to the conclusion that this wasn’t the first time this has happened.

“Several months now and they only come out at night. During the day, they walk around like puppets, but we don’t know who has been infected.” Several of the women agreed to the protector’s statement.

“Strange how it’s only your village that has been plagued with this.” Kagome said, feeling sticky with sweat and blood. “And I noticed that when I first came here, they were acting sort of strange.”

“We don’t know much, but I heard rumors of the headman of the village making a pact.”

That was very peculiar and very dangerous, especially if the headman made a pact with a demon. “A pact you say? I’m guessing it’s demonic by nature if it brought your village to this state.”

“We sent letters to priestesses, hoping for some help, but each time one came, we were force to bury them the next day.” The man named Aguri grimly said, a hint of sorrow in his tone.

“There are those who’ve been bitten and tore to bits…” She trailed off, hoping the man could explain.

“We haven’t buried any villagers since then. It is subtle, but all seem to act the same the following morning.”

“And the headman?” Kagome asked, changing the subject after getting answers to that little puzzling piece of information and a bit apprehensive of what she learned of the village and its inhabitants.

“Dead, as were his relatives.”
