When It Rains by LM Bluejay

The next morning came and went…along with the police. The case had no lead to follow on other than the red graffiti and chipped burgundy brick. There were no suspects to go by and they couldn’t produce a physical description. All the officer could do was file a report and hope for the best. The culprit was thought to be some troubled youth seeking a rush and the Higurashi house was just unfortunate enough to be their target.
But Kagome just knew that it wasn’t some random prank and was about to spill the beans to Sho when Frankie called before she got the chance. Apparently his most recent ex-girlfriend from school had decided to get him back for dumping her. And after paying someone off to do her bidding she had tweeted about it online.
A bullet had definitely been dodged but the initial fear was still there. The attack from last night may have come from an angry literature major student, but somewhere deep in the back of her mind Kagome couldn’t help but think what if it hadn’t.
Slowly, she reached for her phone and dialed Gurinman’s number. No answer. She tried it again, but was met by the voice machine once more. Spotting her son still in front of the spray painted letter on the wall she walked up to where he was and stood beside him. “Yah know just staring at it won’t make it disappear any faster.”
“Hn.”
Kagome tugged his arm. “C’mon, Casanova. You’ve been looking at this thing since last night. Let’s get some soap and hot water and hope it’ll clear off.”
“Might wanna verify that with a Google search.” He took a deep sigh and frowned. “Still though, a Y? I could have sworn the letter was A.”
“Maybe she’s wondering why you dumped her like I’m wondering why you won’t let me press charges?”
“It’s complicated. And I don’t want her to get in trouble.”
“The bimbo paid someone to vandalize my house! As far as we’re concerned she’s up a creek without a paddle. And I’ll tell you this, too. Girly is lucky I don’t know where she lives.”
“I know. I know. And I’m sorry you got involved. I’ll pay for the window’s replacement, promise; just let me handle this, ok?”
“Fine.” He gave her a quick hug before rushing to the house. She was about to follow him inside when a familiar black sedan suddenly appeared.
Who she expected to step out of the car was Gurinman, but shortly came face-to-face with someone else instead. He was only a little bit taller than her and had dull ginger hair poking out from under his black cap. She watched him take her in with curious green eyes. A light rosy hue began to paint his fair toned cheeks.
“Gosh, you’re pretty…uh I mean hi! Are you Higurashi?”
Her head slightly tilted. “Yes?”
He brushed down his black suite and took a deep bow. “I’m Shippo Takahata.”
Kagome blinked. “Ok…?”
He stayed bowed.
For a moment neither said anything.
“Um…this is the part where you order me around.”
“To do what exactly? I don’t even know why you’re here.”
Shippo scratched the back of his head. “Eh? Didn’t you get my message? I tried calling you yesterday like…once. Well technically twice I guess if you count the butt dial but m-yeah…” He reached into his pocket and withdrew a red device. And after punching in a few keys Kagome’s phone began to ring. “See?”
“Wait, you’re that 867 number?”
“I’m gonna go with sure. Shippo Takahata at your service! Or you can call me something else if you want, like Ships ah hoy or Shipster or my personal fav The Ship.”
“Shippo…is fine. What are you doing here?”
He smacked the front of his head and huffed. “Geez! Didn’t Jay man tell you anything? Alrighty then, listen up. I’m you’re new personal cabby and you’re my very first. Assignment.” He chuckled to himself as he flipped out a little black book from his jacket. “Let’s see.” His thumb went through the pages until it landed on a spot. “Ah! Says here I’m supposed to have you at the main estate...by six...sometime tooo...fuck! I-I mean shit! Wait, no! That still came out wrong. Um!” He snapped the book shut. “Well then! No worries. At least you’re already packed, right?”
“No?”
“Then this could be a problem.”
