What he can't have.... by Dolly Black

He waits

She was different; he knew that, she was different from anything and anyone he’d ever encountered. She was different and he hated it. He hated that nothing about her was predictable, that he didn’t understand her. It wasn’t just her unusual kindness, her ability to befriend everyone she met, the inhuman beauty she possessed despite her obvious humanity, or the fact that she was from a world he didn’t know.

He may hate all of those qualities but what he hated the most was the fact that she wasn’t his and he couldn’t have her. No, she belonged to his idiot of a half-brother. The dim-witted fool that Inuyasha was he had still somehow managed to secure the heart of the young priestess.

Though he knew that, Sesshoumaru still coveted her in the darkest parts of his mind and heart. He wanted her for himself, and as the Lord of the Western Lands, there was nothing he couldn’t make his, including one little priestess. Even if he couldn’t have her heart, he could and he would have her body and soul. He just had to bide his time and wait for her to be alone. The opportunity would present itself someday and when it did he would take it.

Every night he watched her while leaning against a tree as usual on the outskirts of the group. Though Naraku had been destroyed a few months previous they still travelled around cleaning up after the dark demons mess. Sesshoumaru had stayed under the guise of wanting Rin to learn more human customs and the like from her own kind, since obviously the great Sesshoumaru would not know of such things.

He watched her constantly and she remained blissfully unaware, which was exactly what he wanted. He walked in the back of the group which made it easy for him to keep an eye on her without her knowing. She had grown into quite the graceful woman from the clumsy child she had been when he first met her in his father’s tomb. There was something new about her though and he couldn’t figure it out. It was yet another thing that he hated. She was somehow different ever since the wish on the jewel and he had no idea what it was that was making her thus. It frustrated him more than anything else ever could to not know something.

His cold eyes watched her, scrutinizing her from every angle and still he couldn’t put his clawed finger on what exactly had changed. Feeling even more irritated than usual the demon lord decided it was time for him to hunt, so without a word he left to vent his anger on some poor unsuspecting creature.

There were many things that caused Kagome to be curious; it was just in her nature to be so. The demon lord’s sudden flight was one of them. She could feel the agitation in his aura and had thought nothing of it, simply assuming it was the humans in the group or Inuyasha. As her mind turned to the gruff half demon she looked down at herself. Long ago having abandoned modern clothes, Kagome wore a simple priestess outfit. She knew it made her look like Kikyo, but she and Inuyasha had to get over that if they were going to work out.

The plan was to court for a year and then mate if they had been able to grow as partners. She hoped desperately that he would be able to look past her resemblance to the former priestess, but so far it was slow progress. Staring wistfully at her handsome half demon she sighed a little and began to daydream about all that the future would hold.

It was a good long time before Sesshoumaru returned dropping a deer carcass in the middle of camp and leaving it to the women of the group to skin. Kagome just stared at it for a minute before she began helping Sango prepare the meat to be cooked. The children ran around playing tag and Inuyasha just whined about how much he missed his ramen making Kagome roll her eyes at his childish behaviour.

All the while a silent demon lord sat against a nearby tree, drifting into the darker parts of his mind where he kept his thoughts of her hidden. Wondering how much longer he would have to wait to put his plan into action. He was a patient creature, but that didn’t mean that he particularly liked waiting.
