Sesshomaru heard the door to her chamber slam shut and the sound seemed loud enough to echo in his cold heart.

This is how it feels like when one has affections for someone. He stood by the window of his chamber, watching her running away agitatedly, and with tears on her beautiful face. He wanted to follow her and wipe away her tears but his pride gets in the way.

She had stayed in his palace for months but will probably stay in his heart for a lifetime. Sesshomaru does not know how to earn Kagome’s forgiveness for being trapped within his strong hatred for the world and his strong desire to keep her close. He knew that she wasn’t Izayoi’s descendant because she looked exactly like…Kikyou.

But he had kept that information to himself, and ordered his soldier to take another human girl to kill. This is carried out in secret, and so Kagome thought he was only bidding his time.

But, he was buying more time for her to stay. There is so much hatred in her eyes that matched his own, and he wanted to see how she’ll carry out the revenge she seeks.

Even if she’s Kikyou’s reincarnation, they are so different.

Ah, yes, Kikyou. His brother’s wench. One day, she came to him, much to his surprise, and disdain…

“Sesshomaru-sama…” She bowed low with her bow and arrows.

He looked disdainfully at her and asked, “What is you want?”

She stared at him impassively for a few moments before saying, “Inuyasha’s death.”

Sesshomaru’s brows raised in surprise. “Why would you want that?”

“I…I thought…he… well…he’s losing his mind, my lord.” She told me. “Not even his sword could control his youkai heritage. It’s overpowering him, and he is letting it. He’s going to destroy himself, and no one could help him. He’s letting his hatred take the reins in life and I couldn’t let him…wreak havoc.”

“Hnn.”

He had agreed to help her, but decided that he should be the one to take his half-brother’s life. Kikyou set a trap for him but his youkai heritage overpowered him that night, and he had taken Kikyou’s life. When he came back to normal, Inuyasha’s anguish filled the night at what he had done. He loved Kikyou and the betrayal destroyed him more than Sesshomaru thought possible.

Sesshomaru spared him that night and left him with his hell of a life.

Since then, the gentle side of Inuyasha completely vanished and he became an empty shell filled with hatred and anger.

Sesshomaru was pulled out of his thoughts at the ominous feeling that suddenly enveloped his entire being.

He lifted his golden-eyes to the blackening sky, and he watched as the first few drops of rain hit the land. He narrowed his eyes and strained his aura throughout the lands, searching for Kagome.

His eyes widened when he found her with the weak mating bond between them. Immediately, he turned into a bright sphere and flew to where his aura felt her weak ones.

He landed a few feet beside her in a matter of minutes. The rain soaked him, making his expensive clothing cling tightly on his body. He slowly walked to where she lay, bleeding badly yet sleeping soundly. “Kagome…” he whispered.

She did not move, and her eyes remained closed. Her beautiful face looked peaceful. As if she achieved some kind of nirvana while losing blood.

He knelt beside her, uncaring of the mud and blood that stained his clothes, and he gathered her in his arms. “Kagome.” He whispered again, caressing her face gently.

Her eyes fluttered softly and she peeked at him with her sapphire eyes. She gave a tired smile, a weak smile, but full of sincerity. “You could not die yet.” He said calmly even if his heart thundered in his chest. “You have to kill me yet.”

She chuckled but it came out like a gurgling sound as she coughed up more blood. She lifted her weak hands to touch the magenta stripe on his right cheek. “I don’t have to.” She whispered. “I don’t hate you anymore.”

He lifted his brows at her and asked, “Why change your mind?”

“I…I know the truth.” She said, shifting her eyes to the sky. “It was…someone else who killed my family.”

“How have you known? Who did this to you?” He asked the last question harshly.

“Someone confessed a while ago.”

“The rain erased his scent but I know it was my bastard of a brother. I will find him and give him the most painful death.” He promised her, his eyes hardening with hatred.

Kagome gripped his arms with all her strength and shook her head at him. “No!” She almost yelled. “No more hatred. No more. Stop this endless cycle of hatred.” She looked him straight in the eyes. “I have allowed vendetta run my life for so long and yet, it led to more suffering. Please. Sesshomaru-sama. Let go of this hatred in your heart. If you want me to have peace in the afterlife, please—“

“Who told you that you are going in the afterlife?” He growled.

“Nothing can save me anymore, Sesshomaru.” She whispered, smiling with blood-stained teeth.

Sesshomaru shook his head at her then clutched at the Tensaiga strapped at his waist. “I will save you.”

Kagome pulled his face towards her and she kissed him on the lips. Softly. Gently. Then, she whispered, “Thank you, Sesshomaru-sama. For the short time that I have spent you, you managed to make me feel…happy. Somehow. Please…stop the hatred. Don’t let vendettas run your life. Pl—please.”

Then, all life left her, and yet, Sesshomaru clung to her lips like a lifeline.

For a few minutes, he did not move then he raised Tensaiga.

Nothing.

Save her. He begged. Save her. He grovelled.

Still. She stayed still. Still as a corpse.

“No. Kagome. Open your eyes.” He whispered urgently. “You have to open your eyes, this an order, stubborn human.”

Sesshomaru gritted his teeth and hugged her closer to him. Then, he felt his brother’s presence a few feet away from them.

“That was how it felt when Kikyou died.” Inuyasha sneered at him. “Keh. A taste of your own medicine. Hope you have fun.”

Sesshomaru was tempted to stand up, grab him, and strike him with his acid whip. But Kagome’s last wish was for him to let his hatred go.

“Inuyasha.” He called him, cradling Kagome closer. “We have lived the same life.” He told him. “The only difference was…I lived in a castle and you lived in a forest. But…it was miserable as well.”

“Are you trying to apologize?” Inuyasha scoffed, his back turned to him.

“Perhaps…” Sesshomaru stared at Kagome’s face. “If that is what this girl need to be peaceful. Then, consider it an apology.”

Inuyasha turned to face him, his shock palpable, then he looked at the dead girl at his arms. His golden-eyes looked panicked, such words have no place for his anger-filled world, and he felt lost.

“Wh-why?” Inuyasha whispered, his voice begging.

“This girl was caught between both of our hatred, and she suffered for our mistake. Granting her last wish is my duty.” Sesshomaru answered, his eyes never leaving Kagome’s face.

Instead of replying to his brother, Inuyasha jumped away and ran away.

Sesshomaru watched him then turned to Kagome again. “Are you at peace now?” He whispered. “The curse…it would also be broken. I hope that gives you perfect peace.”

He lifted his head to the still crying sky and let his tears fall.
