You Disappoint Me
Wake up,
And face me,
Snow swirled in front of molten gold eyes, and yet Sesshomaru did not blink. He felt as though all requirements to do so had failed him. Blood spattered like fallen rose petals across the white snow on the ground before him, and it trailed like a ribbon from her fingertips. She lay as though she was asleep, and yet he knew from not only her scent but the purpling of her eyelids and the waxiness of her skin that she was dead. And yet, it was not rage he felt at her passing. Not rage, nor sadness, nor regret. No, instead he felt a burgeoning disappointment that threatened to suffocate him. Slowly, he stretched a foot out and nudged her small hand with the tip of his boot. He did not know what he was searching for, but whatever it was, he did not receive it. There was a flicker of some emotion deep inside him, but it was weak, and he ignored it.
He did not see himself, so he did not know how he looked. He was so pale that, even compared to his usual self, he seemed white. His eyes stood out large and shining in his face, like jewels. His claws were ragged and blood oozed from his palms. He did not care. He could not feel it.
“Kagome.” He spoke, but she did not stir.
How many times had he told her that he did not play games? How many times had she been warned to stay close to camp? Her own recklessness had led to her demise. He had nothing to feel guilty for. And image of her smiling face shuddered in his vision and the crack in his flawless façade lengthened. The emotion inside gained power.
He snarled.
Don’t play dead, cause maybe
Someday, I will walk away and say,
“You disappoint me; maybe you’re better off this way.”
She lay like an angel against the snow, a holy angel that had finally been beaten. She was not his friend; he should not care. He could not even call her an ally. But she had been something. She had dared to wiggle her way under his skin and now she had dared to leave. Hands shaking with crackling anger, he unsheathed Tensaiga. He would wake her, and then show her that she did not have the option of just leaving. That was no longer her foolish choice to make.
Wake up, why can’t you?
And face me, come on now
Tensaiga remained lifeless in his hand, and he threw it away in disgust. How the mighty had fallen! Bested by a useless sword and a human girl who should have meant nothing! The wind blew his hair around him and the cold felt good against his emotion riddled skin. Had she felt emotions like this? If so, no wonder she had been so hopeless at mastering her powers. No wonder she had been helpless to the sway of her moods and a slave to her own whims. Crouching next her body, he gently placed a finger against her palm and felt just how cold she was. That was why Tensaiga had failed; she had been dead for far too long.
He bowed his head, his eyes hidden but a fang visible. She was dead as dead can be. He squared his shoulders, trying to shut out the last of his feelings desperately. Maybe this was for the best. He had become much too used to her smiles, her fleeting touch, her constant need to try and be his… his what? His friend, at least. And now, she no longer had to deal with this damn world, with its survival of the fittest mentality and something always chasing her. Be it a hanyou with good intentions or a youkai seeking that sweet smelling blood. Yes. Yes, she was better off this way.
Something inside him shifted, and he opened his eyes reveal crimson red orbs. They were the same color as her slowly drying blood.
Don’t play dead, don’t play dead
Cause maybe, because maybe
Someday, I will walk away and say,
“You disappoint me; maybe you’re better off this way.”
He did not know who he was trying to kid. There was no better off in this world with her light gone from it. The anger faded as he once again touched her hand, silently pleading for her to wake up, smile at him and say, “Well, what’s the plan today, alpha man?”
A tear slipped from one of his ruby eyes, and froze on his cheek in the frigid air.
If she would not wake up, then he would find the ones who had put her to sleep and kill them all. And their families. And their families families.
If he had to suffer…
Then the world would suffer.

A/N: A strange story, that I do not plan to continue. If you were looking for a happy ending, I'm sorry. Also, I do NOT own Inuyasha, or A Perfect Circle's "Passive." 4/17/13
