A/N: And I took a long time to update. Sorry guys. Hope this chapter makes up for it. Toodles!

Prompt: Letter (Week 15)

Word Count: 362

Looking out over the dewy plains, Kagome contemplated Sesshoumaru's recent behaviour. He seemed... annoyed. Shippo and Rin hadn't done anything to irritate him (or at leat, nothing she knew about), and she hadn't irritated him, had she?

Turning to look at her silent companion, Kagome noted the tight set of his jaw and the slight crease between his eyebrows. A frown decorated her own brow. What was wrong?

She knew that if she asked him, he wouldn't answer; too proud to admit that he had a problem. Thus, she would just have to ask Jaken. The toad might know what was going on.

It was a whole week before she had the opportunity to corner him, Sesshoumaru having left to hunt. Glancing at Jaken, she noticed that he too looked more sullen than usual (if that was even possible).

"Jaken, are you and Sesshoumaru-sama okay?"

His bulbous eyes fixed on her. "Why wouldn't we be? Everything is marvellous; we don't need you, ningen."

Kagome's eyes narrowed. The kappa had been nicer to her than when they first met, but he still clearly held a grudge against her. "Jaken. You are Sesshoumaru's retainer; it is your job to inform us of what is going on."

It looked like he was about to argue, but he quickly closed his mouth when her miko ki spiked.

"Fine! Our most esteemed Lord received a letter of summons from his most honorable mother, yet he refuses to visit!"

"Jaken."

The miko and toad spun around to see Sesshoumaru, a large buck slung over his shoulder. Quickly bowing, Jaken tried not to quake in fear.

"Y... yes milord?"

"Leave us."

The inuyoukai fixed Kagome with an accusing stare.

"What?"

At his raised eyebrow, Kagome sent him an accusing stare of her own. "Don't look at me like that mister! You're the one who's scared to see his own mother!"

A moment passed. Then another. A whole minute passed before Kagome could speak again. "I am sorry, I am so, so sorry; I really don't know what came over me just then-"

"Come."

"Eh?"

Walking away, Sesshoumaru said, "We are going to the shiro."

And as he walked away, Kagome belatedly realised that she had been right.
