“Mama! Are we going to leave Sango and Miroku behind?” Shippou asked sadly, pouting at me as I pack our things neatly.

Shippou became close with my best friends, Sango and Miroku, since we spent so much time together; it already felt like we are one family.

“They stay here in Japan, honey. We could not take them in America, can we?” I replied a little distractedly.

“Why can’t we take them?” He asked petulantly.

I sighed exasperatedly. How can I explain to my six year old son that we had to go abroad to start anew?

I left the bag I was packing and walked to where he sat on the bed. “Shippou.”

“Yes?”

He would not understand our situation at his young age. He would not understand that our family was already broken. He would not understand that his father might not care for him anymore.

“We will have an adventure in America, honey. Also, Rin-chan will be there with Sesshomaru. You can always play with her!” I told him as cheerfully as I could manage.

His eyes lit up excitedly, distracted by the word “play”, no doubt. “Really?”

“Yep. So don’t be sad anymore. We can always call, text, e-mail or skype with Sango and Miroku, okay?”

He nodded, his previous concerns forgotten. I smiled wistfully. He would be looking and asking for his father as soon as distractions ran off. I need to do something.

While pondering these thoughts, a knock followed by the opening of the door distracted me from my concerns.

“Sesshomaru!” Shippou greeted but as soon as seeing Sesshomaru’s aloof face, he quickly muttered, “Sesshomaru-sama…”

I rolled my eyes at him. “Do not scare my son.” I admonished softly. “Where is Rin?”

“Outside.” After two years of being somehow “friends” with him and after helping me through what Inuyasha did, his replies never changed. It remained monosyllabic, still impassive and a little aloof but there was a sort of gentleness in his eyes and manner that told a different story.

“I will play first, mama!” Shippou said before running out of the room while yelling Rin’s name playfully.

“Are you already packed?” He asked when we were alone.

“Almost,” I replied.

“You look distracted.”

“Shippou.” I said by the way of explanation.

“We will deal with his questions when it came. For now, worry about yourself.”

I sighed, but nodded my agreement. He walked beside me, and put a finger on my chin. He raised my face to him, and held my gaze with his golden eyes. For months after the divorce, I couldn’t even look at his eyes, but soon, I realized that even if he shared the same eye color with Inuyasha, they were still different.

I blinked at him, and softly asked, “What is it?”

He remained silent for a long time, his eyes searching mine, and a look of satisfaction passed through his gaze when he seemed to find what he was looking for. He nodded, and pulled away. “Tonight, we leave for Los Angeles.”

I nodded at him, and repeated with a little difficulty, “Tonight, we leave.”

We arrived in Los Angeles, and settled in an apartment, which Sesshomaru bought for us, located just next his own apartment with Rin.

We were all jetlagged, except for Sesshomaru, and the children were already asleep.

“Can I stay with you for tonight?” He asked, Rin carried in his arms.

I smiled, and nodded. “It’s your apartment, anyway.”

He narrowed his eyes at me, and said firmly. “It’s yours.”

I shook my head, not in the mood to argue with him, and motioned to the bedroom. “Let’s put them to bed.”

Afterwards, we sat in the living room with warm cups of coffee. “Sesshomaru-sama?”

He glanced at me. “Drop the honorific. We’re not in Japan anyway.”

I looked at him, burning with curiosity, and I thought of how little I knew about him. “Why do you have it anyway?”

“Because I’m a daiyoukai,” he said with an air of arrogance I had learned to become fond with. “It’s a tradition, especially in the demon world, to address the superiors properly.”

“Well, humans do that too, I suppose. So…I’m curious. About Rin.” I looked down at my coffee, and felt a little awkward. He never told me about how he became a Father to a human girl.

“In the demon world, a daiyoukai was sometimes paired to a demoness with superior power herself. I was supposed to mate someone named Kagura.”

That was news, and I felt hungry for more information. I was sure that Sesshomaru had so many layers, and for the friendship we shared, it just felt right to try and uncover them.

“Was?” I prompted.

“She died.”

My wide eyes lifted to him, but he had a distant look in his eyes. As if he wasn’t here with me. “Uhm…I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to—“

“It happened almost three centuries ago, and I never loved her, Kagome. No deep feelings. But we shared a camaraderie. We were both fulfilling a duty. That was to mate.”

“Oh, well…”

“But she loved me. She confessed just as she was dying.”

“How did she die?” I asked gently.

“Assassinations happen. Our enemies killed her. But, humans helped her. It was so unheard of during those days. Humans and demons found their peace today, but centuries before, they were at war. The humans who helped her were Rin’s ancestors. They couldn’t have done anything to save her, but their genuine concern prompted Kagura to make me promise.”

“What promise?”

“After she confessed to me about her feelings, she asked me to always protect the humans who tried to help her even if they had no reason to. Those humans were Rin’s ancestors.”

“Really? Wow! This is like…wow.”

His lips curled upwards. Just a little. “I stayed here, in America, for so long. When I came back, Rin’s family were massacred by robbers. She was the only survivor. I adopted her. She was merely a baby at the time.”

I smiled, and gulped my already-cold coffee. “You know, I feel honored. I think I made you talk more than you ever did.”

He narrowed his eyes at me. “I talked because I want to. Not because a wimpy girl like you “made” me.”

I huffed in mock indignation. “Wimpy? You think you’re so strong, huh, big boy?”

His brows lifted at the name I called him, and a dark look passed his eyes. My eyes widened at the look, and I tried to back away, but he had already moved with his demon speed. I squealed, and almost dropped the coffee cup from my hands. He took the cup from me, and put it on the coffee table. Then he pinned me on the couch with a sinister looking smirk.

I narrowed my eyes at him. “What do you think you’re doing?”

His golden eyes danced with amusement, and mockery. He didn’t answer me, instead, he leaned down to nuzzle my neck. I laughed as it tickled slightly, and tried pushing away from him. “Sesshomaru!”

“Yes, love?”

“Don’t call me that. It really doesn’t suit you when you say that!” I laughed when his grip tightened, and he stretched himself over me.

“You don’t tell me what to do, human.”

I smirked at him, and said playfully, “We can’t be friends-with-benefits anymore.”

“Are you certain?” He asked seriously, and I almost believed that he wanted it. He must’ve seen the panicked look on my face, because a moment later, he broke off with a short laugh.

I scrambled to sit up straight as he lifted his coffee to his mouth. “That wasn’t funny!” I complained to him.

He smirked. The demon daiyoukai just really smirked arrogantly at me. I sent him a death glare, but at my expression, his smirk almost turned into a smile.

“Go to sleep, Kagome.” He said after a while.

I slowly stood up, and nodded. “Yeah. I’m actually exhausted. See you tomorrow?”

He nodded at me, his firmness, and collectedness reassured me even thought I was in a strange country with strange language. I was going to be lost here if not for him. “Tomorrow. Get some rest. We’d do a lot tomorrow.”

I don’t know what his plans were, but I just nodded after a yawn. “Okay.”

I retreated from the living room, but before I could leave. His voice stopped me, and I glanced at him questioningly. “Friends-with-benefits? It benefited you well.”

I glared at him, and whispered harshly, “Stop it!”

He smirked again, and said, “I told you that Inuyasha would know that something happened between us.”

I gasped in surprise, my heart thudded in my chest, and I asked, almost horrified, “What did you do?”

“Well, I couldn’t show any evidence about us before the divorce was over. So, before we went here, in L.A., I left some parting gift with him.”

“What kind of gift exactly?” I asked in a hushed whisper.

“A photo of us. In bed, together.”

Now, I truly felt horrified. “Sesshomaru! I never asked you to give him a scandal—you—“

“I didn’t. It was after you fell asleep. I covered you well, and then I slid close to you, naked.” His gaze turned dark. “He threw you away. He doesn’t have any more right to see you naked. But the photo was clear. It showed that something happened.”

I bit my lip nervously. “He…what would…he doesn’t care anymore. I don’t think it matters.”

“It matters. Men hates to see the woman, who was once his, together with someone else.” He smirked at me, again, but behind the satisfaction was something sinister. I took a step back. “This is only the beginning of our revenge, Kagome.”

I stared at him with wide eyes, and thundering heartbeats. Slowly, I bobbed my head up and down. I swallowed loudly, and bit my lip. “I don’t really care about revenge. All I wanted now is to live my life as much as I can.”

He nodded. “Good. That, actually, is the best revenge. Good night, Kagome.”

I left him in the living room, and thought to myself. Sesshomaru would ruin Inuyasha. And I don’t even know if I wanted to stop him. But one thing is for sure, this is really just the beginning.
