The Slytherin Ring by kaoruhana

Chapter 1

Sesshomaru was sitting with his girlfriend of five years on their shared sofa.  She was reading one of her novels again- the woman had too many in his opinion- and she was too engrossed in it.  He on the other hand was anxious, and not in a good way.  Sitting in his pocket was a box that he was playing around with and in it was a little something that he hoped Kagome liked.  Finally, making up his mind to do what he planned, Sesshomaru took the book out of his girlfriend’s hands and set it on the table, the spine facing up so that she could easily find her place again.  She huffed but raised her eyebrows when she saw him kneel on the floor in front of her.  She knew what was coming next- hell she’d known he was bound to finally give her the ring sooner or later especially with his remarks to their father.  It was nice to know they were on the same page as to which direction their relationship was progressing.  So she sat back and watched as Sesshomaru opened the box and asked her that one infamous question that all men face.

“Kagome, will you marry me?”  She was inclined to say yes but then took a good look at the ring.  Oh- oh no!  What had he done!  Sesshomaru had gotten her a Slytherin ring.  And almost automatically, the novel addict answered his question gravely.

“Oh god!”  She looked at the ring Sesshomaru presented her with one last time and turned teary eyes up to him.  “I’m sorry Sesshomaru I can’t marry you.”

Sesshomaru stared at the absurd female in front of him.  For weeks now, he’d been hinting to this, he’d asked her about family, made plans with her regarding the future, hell he had even told his father- in front of her- that he intended to not let her go.  And here she was refusing him after being complacent for weeks?  What was wrong with this woman?  He was angry right now, frustrated actually and tried to see what had made Kagome reject his proposal when she had been so forthcoming about it earlier.  She however, was still looking in horror at the ring.  The ring- what the hell did the bloody ring have to do with it he wondered.

Kagome stared at the Slytherin ring in horror.  She was an avid Harry Potter fan and liked to consider herself anything but a Slytherin.  And the ring he’d picked was Slytherin all the way from its silver to the emerald sitting beautifully in the middle of the silver circle.  She couldn’t wear it, so she’d have to wait until Sesshomaru got another ring and proposed to her before saying yes.  A Gryffindor ring would do- a ruby and gold ring, or even a Ravenclaw styled ring would do.  She was so lost in her thoughts that she failed to see her boyfriend’s expression.  She also didn’t see him stand up and move for the door until the sound of shuffling shoes got her attention.  He was planning on leaving.

“Wait, why are you leaving?”  Lost in her Harry Potter world and forgetting her boyfriend’s tendencies to not care about it, she saw his departure to signal bad news.  Really, he needed to just understand her sometimes she thought.  Hadn’t she mentioned that she hated those colors because they reminded her of certain negative people from Harry Potter?  Oh, of course, there was Snape but too much negative really did cancel out the good!

“Are you mocking me more than you have already woman?”  Sesshomaru snarled, all niceness flying out the window.  He was infuriated at this point and as Kagome looked at him it suddenly dawned on her how utterly foolish her actions had been.  He had asked for her hand in marriage!  The ring in question wasn’t meant to be a harmless trinket!  The young woman suddenly wished the ground could swallow her up whole.  But still, her boyfriend deserved an answer she supposed as she tried to somehow explain her actions to him.

“Oh Sesshomaru, I can’t marry you if you get me a Slytherin ring.” She pointed to the box still in his hand.  “Get another one and I will.”

Sesshomaru didn’t know whether to berate Kagome or bang his head against a wall.  Either one seemed alright at the moment considering he was planning on tying himself to an insane Harry Potter obsessed girl for life.  Why was he doing this again? Oh that’s right, he loved her.  He walked towards her and before she could protest slipped the ring he had on her finger.  He was frankly done with this nonsense and she was going to have to listen to him before she spouted off more things that had nothing to do with how they lived their lives.

“This is yours Kagome and no it has nothing to do with Slytherin.  In fact, this ring is what I see you as.  You are the light to my darkness- the silver represents this.  And the green- Kagome your life and vitality make me keep going.  Now are you going to wear this ring or are you going to make me walk out of here wondering why I love a Harry Potter obsessed woman?”

Kagome who was now slowly getting emotional finally acquiesced to his demands.  Sesshomaru was one of the best things in her life and one little itsy bitsy teeny Slytherin element into her life wasn’t going to change things.  She’d let this one slide.  And she hoped that the Harry Potter fan girl in her would let this slide too.  It wasn’t too bad on her anyway- her hand now looked really posh and fancy.  The ring was made with a beautiful filigree design and the emerald in question was teardrop shaped.  She had to admit it was pretty and when on her finger reminded her less of Slytherin and more of her fiancé.  With a smile, she reached up and threaded her arms around his neck.

“I’m sorry; do you forgive this stupid silly girl?” Sesshomaru laughed but smiled nonetheless and leaned down to kiss her.

“Only if you promise to never do that again.”
