Chapter 1

A/N: Hello everyone! This is my first try at writing a fanfic, so I went with a oneshot. Well, a kind of long oneshot? Anyways, it was fun to write, so I hope you have fun reading it.

Kagome closed her eyes and took in a long breath. The smell of salt in the air, the gentle sound of waves rolling onto shore. It helped her relax her thoughts. It had been over 3 years since she had made her wish, since the well had closed, locking away the past, separating her from her second family.

Inuyasha...

Admittedly, she still held some feelings for the hot headed hanyou, her first love. Try as she might to completely let go and move on, she always seemed to find her thoughts wandering back to him. What was he doing? Had he found a place that accepted him? Had he moved on? Was it possible he was still...

Come on Kags, get over it! He would have shown up by now if he was still alive! Move on! He wouldn't want you to be miserable and alone!

Kagome sighed. As expected, this summer beach excursion with her college friends was not turning out to be as relaxing and life changing as she had hoped. Since she had graduated from high school, her mind continuously battled back and forth between wanting to let go of the past she knew was lost to her and wanting to hold on to the pure feelings of her first crush. She still was not able to fully resolve herself to let go of Inuyasha.

Opening her eyes, she took one last glance out toward the ocean. Just surfacing from the water was a man with long, jet black hair that strangely reminded her of Inuyasha on his human night. But as he rose from the water she knew it wasn't, this man was taller and had a more lean build. As the man turned toward the beach Kagome gasped as her eyes traced his body upwards at the sight of sculpted abs, a toned chest, water beading and dripping from perfect lips.. perfect lips that could be sending shivers down her spine when they...

Geez Kagome, get your act together!

Moments like this were becoming more frequent for her. She had taken notice of some rather good looking men on more than one occasion recently. But this man was godly compared to them. Her body was definitely trying to send her a message, and she knew exactly what it was. Her only intimate encounter was kissing Inuyasha a few times in the Feudal Era. And given how her body seemed to be reacting right now to the sight of this god-like creature, she wasn't even sure her junior pecks on the lips before even counted as experience. Yes, there was definitely something deep inside her waiting to be released. Waiting, just barely shackled by her lingering feelings for Inuyasha, but trying to break free to relieve the moments of loneliness she tended to ignore.

Kagome quickly turned back to head to the beach house where she was staying. Distracted by her inner battle, she missed the fact that the man she had been ogling was starring straight at her with a slight smirk forming on his lips.

A few hours later Kagome and her friends were headed to a nearby beach house a few minutes walk down the road. Apparently her friend Yuni had earlier gotten an invitation to a party by a group of “damn sexy young men.” She had debated not going, her “relaxation” on the beach had only made her depressed, wondering if she would ever be able to let go and move on. But, she realized maybe a party was the perfect way to distract her thoughts, meet some new people, have a little fun. Kagome thought back to the man she had seen on the beach...Maybe this is my chance? I really don't think I can love someone like I loved Inuyasha. But I have to stop being stuck on him, maybe just give in and take a chance...

“-gome. Earth to Kagome!” She was jarred from her thoughts by Eri's calls. “We're here.” They walked up the stairs and Yuni opened the door, introducing them as the group that “Maru and company” had invited. They were ushered in, names flying back and forth, handed cups with some fruity smelling liquid and told to help themselves and enjoy themselves. While Eri and her two other friends headed toward the back of the house where the main crowd seemed to be gathered, Yuni led Kagome to a nearby vacant couch to sit.

“Kags, you've been depressed all week, what on earth is going on?” Yuni asked with a worried look on her face. Kagome sighed. She had hoped not to ruin anyone else's vacation with her petty love troubles.

“It's nothing really, just had a lot on my mind.”

“Come on, don't give me that” Yuni pressed. “I've been your friend for over a year, and you've gotten into these little dumps of yours too frequently to count.”

“Well...” Kagome hesitantly replied. “I guess the simple of it is, I'm stuck trying to get over my first love.”

Yuni had a competitive look on her face. “I know just the thing! Wait here.” She got up and looked around, before smiling and heading off.

Kagome took a sip of her drink. Hmm this is pretty tasty. Closing her eyes again just briefly she thought about her earlier resolve before entering the party to take a chance. Yes, I should take a chance. Take a chance on falling in love with someone else. But what's the first step? Her thoughts went back to the black-haired man on the beach. What were his likes? Dislikes?

She took another sip of her drink.

How old was he? Where was he from? Did he do any sports? His body certainly looked well toned...how would her hand feel running over his hard...

“Kagome! I want to introduce you to someone.” Kagome's eyes popped open at the sound of Yuni's voice, and noticed she had brought someone back with her. Glancing over and bringing her eyes up to his face, she immediately recognized the adonis she had seen on the beach earlier.

“My name is Maru, it is a pleasure to meet you,” he spoke softly. Her eyes met his and she again was surprised to be reminded of Inuyasha as light golden eyes stared back at her. He smiled, and she realized he was holding out his hand for her to shake.

“Kagome...my name is Kagome,” she almost stuttered as she reached out and shook his hand. He then leaned over and brought her clasped hand up to his lips and placed a gentle kiss on the back of it. Kagome blushed, while Yuni's eyes lit up and a smile came to her face as she said “Well, I'm going to find Eri and the others, have fun you two!” and walked off but not before sending a wink to Kagome, who immediately blushed.

“May I sit down?” Maru asked. “Oh...of course!” Kagome nervously replied. Damn he's so hot! Taking a gulp of her drink this time to try and calm her nerves, she asked “So, are you enjoying the party?”

He chuckled, and Kagome blushed even further. Omg Kagome, that was so lame, enjoying the party?? That's the best you can do?

“Well, it is my party, so I better enjoy it” he smiled with an amused expression on his face. Leaning back, he crossed one leg across his other knee as he asked “Tell me, how are you enjoying your vacation here?”

Kagome couldn't stop looking at him, she couldn't believe this man would want to talk to her. Everything about him screamed perfection. And those eyes...there was something in those eyes that drew her in, like some kind of magic, making her want to know more about this man. Ask him all sorts of questions about his life, his hobbies, his goals. And she couldn't resist doing just that.

An hour later found Kagome parched from the intense conversation she was having with what seemed like her new best friend. She couldn't believe how much they had in common, and his laugh was contagious. At the beginning of the night she walked into the party somewhat depressed over her internal battle. Even the nerves she felt initially when talking to this man were gone and she felt completely relaxed and her spirit lifted. Granted, she was sure the alcohol had a little to do with it, but she also knew that this guy had some kind of special gift and was able to read her mood and knew how to turn it around. She hadn't been this happy in a while.

This guy is definitely special. I think I could definitely move forward in life and move past my feelings for Inuyasha if it's with this man.

Kagome went to sip some more of her drink, only to realize the cup was now empty. Maru reached his hand out and took the cup from her, offering to get her some more.

“Thank you...” Kagome stammered as he got up from the couch. Maybe it was an accident, but as he took the cup from her one of his fingers gently traced the inside of her palm ever so faintly, leaving what felt like a blazing hot trail. But maybe she imagined it. Yes, probably that's it. It was the alcohol. She did have a fairly low tolerance, after all.

Deciding it was a good opportunity, Kagome got up and asked the nearest person where the bathroom was. They pointed her in the direction of the stairs near the front door. Walking toward the bathroom, she spotted Maru at the drink table chatting with another guy with long, black hair. Making eye contact, she smiled and mouthed “bathroom” and he nodded his head in acknowledgement.

Closing the bathroom door behind her, Kagome rested her hands on the sink and took in a deep breath. She looked into the mirror, noting the slight flush to her cheeks, probably from the alcohol and the warm temperature in the house from all the body heat. She needed a game plan. Right, Kags. This is your chance. This guy is sweet, funny, charming, smart, and sexy. He has made you forget about Inuyasha in the past hour. He makes you laugh, you have things in common. This is your chance to finally move on.

Splashing some water on her face, she continued thinking while patting her face with a towel. Right, well, what's the next step? Ask for his number? Email? Somewhat frustrated, she left the bathroom and headed back toward the main area where everyone was. However, she suddenly found herself pinned against the wall starring up into the eyes of man most recently occupying her thoughts. His hand moved to cup her check, fingertips tracing the side of her face and tucking her hair behind her ear. “You are nervous again,” Maru stated plainly.

“What happened?” Maru asked, closing the door quitely behind him.

“He was...lost to me.
