Darkness Loves Him

Kagome glanced out of the corner of her eye at the newest member of their party.  Sesshomaru sat half-draped in shadow, the firelight bright in his golden eyes, a silent sentinel on the edge of their camp.  He was a new fixture that was not yet completely accepted.  He was treated politely, but not exactly in a friendly way.  Oddly enough, Inuyasha was the only one totally relaxed in his half-brother's prescence.

"If he says he won't hurt us, then he ain't gonna.  Got too much honor."

Miroku also was starting to warm to him, but Sango was wary and Shippo was too frightened.  Kirara, being a feline, seemed content to simply ignore him.  It was a slightly tense air that had settled over the camp.  Kagome was unsure how to feel.

On the one hand, she knew he was honorable and knew he was strong; he would be a fine addition to their party.  Not to mention that with him came Rin.  Certainly a joyful tag-a-long.  Ah-Un was sweet and Jaken was all bluster, but they had already settled down, Jaken quietly reading Rin something by the fire.  They were no trouble at all.

And yet, on the other hand... this was the youkai that had plunged a hand through Inuyasha's gut, attempted to steal the Tetsusaiga more than once, and she certainly wasn't forgetting her own brushes with death.  He was honorable, but he was also a beast.  He walked in shadow and his hands were bathed in blood.

Darkness loves him.  It caresses him like a lover, and it dances with him in the night.  It's a  part of his very soul.  Can I trust some one like him?

Again, she glanced at him; he was gazing at the moon.  Daydreaming?  She smiled at the thought.  She shifted her power slightly, trying to see with her Inner Eyes, and gasped aloud.

A nimbus of light like a star glimmered around his form.  It was mixture of silver and gold, with a glimmering of the poisonous green that was the light of his power.  He was so bright!  In fact, he was too bright, and she had to sever the connection to her powers, her heart hammering with shock and her eyes stinging.

Everyone was staring at her; she flushed.  His brow quirked, and she turned away to hide her face.  She could not stop the smile that bloomed.

He did not dance with darkness.  He illuminated it.
