To the Hallway

Present

Rain was pouring down like bullets and thunder was booming constantly at a deafening intensity. Two high school students were soaked to the bone and one was freezing while the other was just slightly uncomfortable.

“Selfish, thy name is Kagome!” Sesshoumaru shouted through the rain and thunder.

“Me?! What about you?! Huh, Sesshoumaru?! You’re not Gods gift to earth!”

“You know what, Kagome; you’ve changed,” he said calmly before roaring, “You’re psychotic!”

“Ugh!” she stomped her feet. “I. Hate. You!!”

“Psychotic AND delusion! Real great, Kagome. Really.”

“Fuck you,” Kagome stormed off, water splashing with each stomp.

How did it come to this? Kagome couldn’t remember. In a matter of moments she replayed certain aspects that led to this current situation. A 13 year friendship destroyed in a matter of few weeks because of a few choice decisions and one hidden feeling.

12 years ago – Kindergarten

“Hello class! This is your first day of Kindergarten.”

“Psst,” a 5 year old with pigtails whispered to a silver haired dog demon.

He ignored her.

“Psst, I’m Kagome,” she whispered.

She still got nothing from him.

“Pssssssssssssst,” she tried more earnestly this time to which she got no response.

Getting fed up she stood up and grabbed him by his shirt. “Hey! It is not nice to IGNORE your friends!”

“We’re not friends,” he shouted, trying to get out of her grip. “I don’t even know you!”

“Sesshoumaru Taisho and Kagome Higurashi,” the teacher said. “To the hallway.”

Those three words – to the hallway – was the start of their friendship. Many altercations, arguments, and jokes always seemed to end in those three words for the two of them. They liked it that way. Kagome was a free spirited girl who loved the way the sun shined down on flowers and Sesshoumaru was a silver haired dog demon who just wanted to be like his father. Who would’ve known that these two unlikely kids would turn out to be the best of friends and eventually more.

Second grade

“Hey Kagome,” Sesshoumaru whispered to her while the teacher had their backs to the class.

“What?”

“Give me a pocky stick.”

“No, they’re mine.”

“Give me one,” he whispered louder.

“I said no, Sesshoumaru,” she whispered even louder.

“Ahem,” the teacher cleared his throat, looking at the two of them. “To the hallway.”

“Good job Sesshoumaru,” she grumbled.

First day of middle school

“How exactly do I keep getting saddled next to you,” Kagome said in a low voice.

Kagome and Sesshoumaru sat at the back of the classroom. Their teacher was going on about their futures and introductions and all that jazz but all Kagome could think about was how Sesshoumaru looked in the uniform and all Sesshoumaru could think about was whether or not Kagome had pocky or not.

“I’m thinking that you’re stalking me. Not that I blame you,” he whispered back.

Kagome rolled her eyes. “Why would anyone stalk you?”

“Because I’m me.”

“Hardy har, Sesshoumaru. But I heard Suzuna confessed to you.”

“Yeah.”

“Well?”

“We made out in a janitors closet.”

Kagome’s jaw dropped. She slammed her hands on her desk, stood up and shouted, “What?”

“Higurashi, Taisho,” the teacher said in a disciplinary tone. “To the hallway.”

“Good going, Kagome,” Sesshoumaru said as the both got their things together.

8th grade

Kagome was walking to the nurses office while classes were in session. She had a headache and suspected that maybe she had a cold. Or maybe she stayed up too late listening to techno music like a damn fool. But if anyone asked – mainly Sesshoumaru – she would go with the first one. The last couple of weeks, Sesshoumaru’s been spending a lot of time at her house. She imagined it was because his younger brother – who just started kindergarten – was annoying him.

She walked into the medical office and not to any surprise, the nurse wasn’t there. So she looked through one of the cabinets for some aspirin. She rolled her eyes at the sounds of heavy breathing from behind one of the curtains.

A girl giggled the name ‘Sesshoumaru’ which made Kagome do a double take. She pulled back the curtain to see a shirtless girl on top of a shirtless Sesshoumaru. “Real nice,” Kagome said and then drew the curtain back. Grabbing an aspirin packet she left.

Sesshoumaru pushed the girl off and went after Kagome. He buttoned his shirt walked beside Kagome. “Skipping class?”

“Uh, no,” she rolled her eyes. “Unlike you I was excused from class to go to the nurse. I was wondering where you were, but I guess I should’ve known.”

Sesshoumaru had both hands in his pockets and was smiling smugly. “Miss me?”

“Miss being sent to the hallway with you? Yeah right.”

“So the teacher thinks you’re sick?”

“Yep.”

“Well then, let’s skip.”

“Uh, no. Let’s go to class.”

“Hn,” he reluctantly conceded.

When they got to class, they took their seats and opened their work books. It was math class and the teacher was going over slope and equations. Kagome had gotten some notes from earlier from another classmate and was working to copy all of it while there were breaks from the current notes. Sesshoumaru was absently staring outside the class window. He always did that. And he was always number 1. Kagome averaged between number 7 to number 13. Which was still really good, but never good enough to beat Sesshoumaru.

“Hey,” Sesshoumaru whispered. “Take notes for me to.”

Kagome scoffed before whispering, “as if you need them.”

“Yeah, you’re right. I’m not stupid like you.”

“I am not stupid,” she yelled in a whispered tone.

“Whatever you say.”

The teacher was standing in front of them, they looked up to see him inpatient and angry. “Glad to see you two finally noticed me.”

“I’m a youkai sensei,” Sesshoumaru said. “I noticed you a long time ago I just chose to ignore you.”

“To the hallway,” he pointed to the door. “Both of you.”

Freshmen year of high school

Kagome took her seat in homeroom, in the middle of the classroom right next to Sesshoumaru.

“Well, Sesshymaru,” she said sounding a bit peeved. “I heard that you and Ami did it over the weekend. At least I know why you cancelled movie night.”

“It was only one weekend.”

“But I rented Brave,” she whined. “Was it at least bad?”

Sesshoumaru gave her a look that said ‘are you kidding me’. “Are you serious? It was amazing. Have you seen her?”

“Yeah whatever,” Kagome mumbled.

“So what did you end up doing over the weekend? Hang out with Souta?”

“No, I had a hot date.”

Sesshoumaru scoffed. “Funny Kagome. What did you really do?”

“Hang out with gramps.”

“Taisho, Higurashi,” the teacher reprimanded. “Since you like talking so much you can do it outside. To the hallway.”

First day of Senior Year

Kagome woke up to her alarm clock and stretched. She opened her window and breathed in the fresh air.

“Senior year,” Kagome breathed out.

Senior year – the beginning of the end.
