Chapter 1: Silk

Silk

Careful not to look into the tree line, Kagome stirred the dying embers. It was just a handful of leaves and twigs – all that she could reach. The small fire was not warm, but its light was comforting.  She was grateful for its appearance.  Jaw clenched, she leaned back into the rock behind her and readied to check the bandages. Just as when she woke a week ago, they were wrapped tight around her abdomen and right leg. She glided her fingers across the silk wrappings and contemplated their owner. These cloths were of high quality and expensive, meant for a more delicate life. She dropped her hand away with a snort at the similarity between herself and the silk. She pulled the torn sleeping bag around her and finally looked to the trees. She sensed nothing, but knew he was there. She called to him, a gentle reminder, "It will be cold tonight, Sesshoumaru-sama."

She would embrace her fate.
