Only the Past can Fix the Future by Dog-Demoness

The Dream

Hey! So this is my first story on here. I have some other stories, but they’re on fanfiction.net. At the moment there aren’t actually any Inuyasha fanfics, but there will be eventually. This is just where I put my KagSesshy fics. Jeez I love these two. I hope you guys like this story!! I do not own Inuyasha or the characters, and sadly not Sesshomaru. The only things that are mine are my thoughts.

Chapter 1: The Dream

OOOoooOOO

Gentle gusts of wind swirled the girl’s long ebony black hair around her slender body. She barely noticed as she kept her sapphire gaze upon the old tree she had seen every day of her life. She saw it so often, whether it was in the past or the future. The young girl looked like any other, gentle and fragile looking to the eye, but she was different in so many ways. There were many who would agree, they just didn’t happen to be in her present time.

The girl, Kagome, watched the tree with a sad and longing look. She could probably have gone back, but she didn’t see what point there was. No one needed her anymore. The shards of the Shikon jewel were collected and the jewel was wished away. Naraku was killed so he could no longer harm anyone. Inuyasha was happy with Kikyo, yet another reason Kagome wasn’t needed. Kagome knew that Kikyo was a much better miko than she could ever hope to be. Her friends would miss her, yes, she decided, but she would not miss the looks full of pity that they gave her.

Kagome shook her head, finally looking away from the large tree. She walked towards her house for the first time in a long while. Her friends in the past would get along just fine without her. They had gotten along fine before she came and they would be fine for the rest of their lives. Kagome decided that she wouldn’t go back. Then again, she did not truly know if she could. It mystified how she was able to return to her time since the jewel has been wished away.

Another shake of her head. It truly didn’t matter how it happened, just that it did. She was home and that was all that mattered. She was back where she belonged. Far as she was concerned, this long and painful chapter of her life was officially closed. A new one would begin right away, starting with a long and hot bath, followed by a delicious meal and a good night’s sleep.

It truly did start that way, after her family’s glee to have her back had ended. She was left to her own devices after dinner and she collapsed on her bed. There were too many memories in her room, she decided. Everywhere she looked she thought of all the times Inuyasha had come here. She even had a picture of her with him, it sat on her desk. Maybe that was why she had refused to even glance at the corner that her desk was in.

Settled in her warm PJ’s, Kagome snuggled against her comfortable bed. No more sleeping on forest floors or almost getting eaten by demons. She fell asleep with a faint smile on her face.

OOOoooOOO

Woken in cold sweat, Kagome jerked up from a dream that she couldn’t seem to remember. What had it been about? She could bet anything that it had been about the feudal era. She should have known it would be harder to just leave that life behind her. As hard as it was for her to admit, she didn’t want to believe that she couldn’t live that life anymore. It brought so much excitement to her and helped awaken her miko abilities, even if they failed her sometimes. She still had a lot to learn, but she was gradually getting there.

Kagome stood up and walked to her window. The sun was just barely rising, giving off only a sliver of light for her to see. She had seen that scene so many times, when Inuyasha wanted to leave before the sun had even rose. He wanted to get a head start on looking for the jewel shards. Was it just natural for her to be used to waking up so early? She wondered how long it would last.

No, she decided, she hadn’t woken up on her own accord. Something in her dream had scared her into waking up. If only she could remember what that dream had been about. She couldn’t be sure. There wasn’t a single image from the dream playing in her mind.

For being up so early she was weirdly awake. She was alert, not an ounce of sleepiness within her. Kagome knew she would not get another wink of sleep, so she got ready for the day ahead of her. It was bound to be a long one.

OOOoooOOO

“I’m so glad you’re feeling better. You were gone for even longer this time. I heard you had to be transferred to a hospital in another country. Is that true?” Eri asked. She walked alongside her friend, watching her for any sign of her collapsing. Kagome may have been back but to Eri she just didn’t seem like herself.

“You could say that. The people were very different.” Kagome mumbled, a small smile playing along her lips.

“Oh? How so?” Ayumi asked.

“They still use herbs to heal.” Kagome said. “It sure did the trick though.”

“That’s weird. How could herbs heal what medicine and technology couldn’t?” Ayumi asked.

“It doesn’t really matter, I guess. As long as you’re all better, Kagome, then I could care less.” Yuka said.

Kagome smiled at her friends. She kept quiet for the rest of the walk to school. She was saved from explaining how herbs had helped her. The truth was they had helped her on many instances, but medicine and technology could have as well. In fact, a lot of the time that was what she used to help her friends. No matter what happened her group always seemed to get themselves into trouble.

Even in the present time there were times when Kagome was met with trouble and had to have Inuyasha protect her. That was over though and she was more than just relieved. The jewel was gone and couldn’t cause any more harm. That was the only times she had trouble in this time. The shards had gotten the attention of demons.

She realized, as soon a she reached the school grounds, she still had some trouble to deal with. Walking towards her with a big smile was the main one that came to mind. She sighed as she spotted him.

Hojo.

He was a nice enough guy, but maybe that was the problem. He was just nice and kind of cute. Kagome had gotten used to startlingly gorgeous guys. Inuyasha, Koga, Sesshomaru, and others. Only the first two had ever pinned after her of course. Sesshomaru was unearthly beautiful though. Nice didn’t mean much to her anymore.

Kagome just couldn’t bring herself to like Hojo, not the way he wanted her to. She feared she would always feel like that towards every male in this era. None of them could possibly match the standards of a demon.

A demon, she mused, that was what she wanted. Until travelling back in time she didn’t even know that they existed. There weren’t any, or at least not many, left in this era. It was as if they had become extinct. They seemed too strong to be extinct though. How was it possible? There was no way that humans could have knocked them off the face of the planet.

“Kagome!” Hojo exclaimed.

“Hi.” Kagome mumbled, returning to reality. Her hopes of finding a demon, much less one that wouldn’t kill her, were slim to none.

“I’m so glad you’re feeling better. I was really hoping we could get together.” Hojo said, smiling charmingly at the girl of his dreams.

“Sorry, I’m still a little sick.” Kagome faked a few coughs, but Hojo seemed to actually believe her. “Maybe some other time. It might still take a few weeks of medicine for the sickness to disappear.”

“Oh.” Hojo mumbled and went along on his way.

“Poor guy. He’s completely clueless.” Eri said.

“I know what you mean.” Yuka said.

Ayumi brought the attention back to Kagome as she asked, “Hey Kagome, are you still with that Inuyasha guy?”

Kagome’s whole body stiffened and she bit out, “No, I’m most definitely not.” She stalked into the school. Her mood was getting worse by the second. No one would be able to cheer her up. She walked to the classroom and slumped into her seat.

She looked out the window, flashes of Inuyasha just outside came to her mind. He had come to her school before and almost exposed himself. Kagome’s refused to let herself cry. It was no mystery that she missed him.

She missed all of them.

OOOoooOOO

Cherry blossom trees surrounded her, her back resting against the trunk of one of them as she hugged her knees to her chest. The pink flowers fell from the trees up above, ghosting across her hand as she caught a few petals. The peace and nature reminded her of the feudal era, just like everything did. No matter where she looked there was always something that reminded her of where her greatest memories rested. They were locked away in a place that she could never return to.

She hummed softly to herself, watching the lush grass filling with pink petals. Everything around her seemed so surreal. It was a little piece of heaven, if she was being honest with herself. It seemed so much like the feudal era. If anything, it was calmer and more peaceful than the feudal era.

Her mind wasn’t shooting off a mile per minute. She was completely at ease as she sat in the standard miko kimono of the feudal era. In a sense she hated the outfit because it reminded her of Kikyo, but she also loved it. The kimono was a part of the feudal era and she loved that era with all of her heart.

She thought back and believed that there was probably a kimono similar to this one someone in the shrine. Yes, she would check. She could wear it every now and then. Maybe it would help her ease into the sudden change.

Just as she thought about it, the petals that were once pink and pretty turned black and crisp. They fell easier than before, covering the ground. The ground was soon black with no sliver of pink or green. The lush grass seemed to die underneath the black petals.

Kagome tried to rise from where she sat, feeling a dark aura, but her body didn’t respond. It was as if she wasn’t in control of it. She could just sit there, immobilized. She couldn’t even move her hand an inch. Her eyes scanned the display in front of her. The only change remained as being the petals.

“Foolish girl, you thought you could rid the world of me. It shall not be done. You shall be the one to fall. Whether it is the dream that suffocates you or I. Your fate is sealed and shall stay that way. You’re bound to the past in more ways that ones. Past and future shall repeat itself, over and over again.” A dark and eerie voice spoke, no body to be found. It chanted, “Die, Miko Kagome. Die, die, die. Die, Miko Kagome. Die, die, die.”

A flash of light flashed through the space, dispelling the black petals. In their wake pink petals fell once more. A figure stood before Kagome, clad in ancient robes and armour. Black hair as fine and soft as silk, eyes as deep as the wood Kagome’s back rested against, and a smile as sweet as sugar itself. That is the form that stood before Kagome.

“M-Midoriko.” Kagome whispered.

“Kagome, dear Kagome. That was the spirit of the jewel that you heard. It is the dark side. The demons I fought merged into the jewel, they are what truly corrupts the jewel. I fear to tell you that the jewel is not done and your quest is not finished.” Her voice was strong, Kagome decided, but soft as well.

“What do you mean? The jewel was wished away. No good or bad could come from that wish, it wasn’t selfish.” Kagome insisted.

“But it was not selfless either.” Midoriko sighed. “Kagome, your quest is not done but you will not be going back to your friends. I have stopped the consequences of the past from reaching the future, but it will last only a few days. You must travel further back and reach the lord of all lords. He is the key to the survival of all. A new evil presents itself in the form of a friend, a fallen friend.”

“Who?”

Kagome stared up at the woman who stood before her. Midoriko knelt down and placed her hand lightly on Kagome’s cheek, whispering, “You will know when the time comes and you will be devastated as well, but my time is limited. I have not the energy to explain. All of my energy is being used to stop the consequences and to send you back further. Back to the time when the West had a wondrous leader.”

As the words left Midoriko’s lips, Kagome’s eyes drooped and everything before her fell into nothingness. She felt like she was the one falling into nothingness.

OOOoooOOO

Chirping birds were what woke Kagome from her dream, one she deemed silly. None of it made sense. She believed it to be just that; a dream. That is, of course, until she opened her eyes. The forest seemed young, and at the same time it seemed more feral than ever. The birds were chirping, but not necessarily the chirping she was used to. Or the birds she was used to. Last time she checked, birds didn’t have a seven inch long talons or fangs the size of a toothbrush.

Kagome stood up with a start, watching the bird who seemed oblivious to her. Immediately Kagome rounded the tree and hoped the dark-furred bird remained oblivious. It could easily been double the size of her head.

She looked down at herself, only to find that she was in the miko clothing from her dream. Kagome couldn’t help but wonder if it was truly a dream. This now, it was no dream. It was a cruel reality. She was back in the past, something she wanted, but she was without a weapon in a more dangerous era.

Her miko powers were her only defense and, in it was any other miko, offense. If only she was better at using them. Kagome could only use them in times of panic, or rather, times of luck. Would she luck out again?

No, she could feel the constant hammer of demonic auras. There were so many. She knew that not all of those were those deadly looking birds. She didn’t know how, she just knew. Kagome feared that whatever else was out there was even more deadly than the birds.

She scoffed, she was afraid of a bird. A deadly bird that probably ate girls like her for fun, but still a bird. There were far more dangerous things than a bird. Kagome, for one, didn’t want to meet them. Instead, she tried to think of a way to escape this deadly land. Or at least the forest.

Kagome peaked around the tree and saw the bird, still uninterested in her. She had no idea what kind of demon it was, only that it was one. She had only one plan and it was a stupid one. Then again, was it really smart just standing there waiting to be eaten by something, bird or not? She already knew the answer.

She had to keep moving.

Kagome hurried away from where the bird sat on the forest floor, sniffing. It had a large beak, orange and resembling that of a toucan. He beak, however, was thinner and sharper looking than that of a toucan’s. Kagome ran, refusing to look back. She was positive she would hear if the bird was coming at her. Sensing the aura would do nothing for her now. All the auras were blended together. There were just too many of them.

Humming softly to herself, just like in her dream, she continued to run. It proved to calm her down a considerable amount. With her nervous in check she could focus on the task at hand. If anything she needed to find a weapon, or at least something to defend herself with. Her barriers took a lot out of her, but it was the one thing she could do with her spiritual powers. If it came down to it she could put up a barrier.

There had to be a village somewhere nearby. Where there was a village there were villagers, and where there were villagers there would be weapons. Sad to say but every village had weapons in the past. Kagome wasn’t one for killing senselessly, but the feudal era wasn’t a place where she refused to kill. She knew that if she valued her life then she would have to.

Still, she ran for what felt like hours but was only fifteen minutes. Kagome stalled in her running, resting against a tree trunk. She didn’t feel like she was any nearer to a village. All she could feel were demonic auras, no human ones. All the demonic auras mixed together, and perhaps that is why she did not realize she was so close to a demon. Eyes watched her curiously, as if she was a species not seen often.

Shivers ran through her petite body and she turned to look over her shoulder. She saw nothing but bushes and trees and shadows of things she didn’t even begin to wonder about. If she did wonder, she would stop. She picked up her running again.

The being, the one who watched her, it followed along with her. She may not have been aware, but the demon had a feeling she had a slight feeling that she was being watched. Then again, perhaps she didn’t. It knew that humans weren’t known for their intelligence. By her clothes, it knew she was a miko. Where were her weapons though? Wasn’t a miko at least smart enough to carry a bow?

Kagome suddenly felt as if she wasn’t alone. She looked over her shoulder and saw nothing. Her gaze was about to shift forward again, but then she caught sight of it. Those looming, golden eyes.

She abruptly stopped running and the demon halted as well. Kagome slowly turned around completely and watched the eyes of the demon that watched her. Her heart thudded radically against her chest. She had seen those eyes before, bright and warm. They seemed different in a way but similar. Similar enough to make her feel weak in the knees. She refused to fall though.

“Inuyasha,” she whispered.

No response.

She waited a long pause and sighed. To herself she muttered, “Okay, so obviously he isn’t even alive yet. This is further in the past, or at least that’s what Midoriko told me.”

Kagome watched the golden eyes as they watched her. If it wasn’t Inuyasha, then who was it? Her eyes widened and she feared the answer. She prayed she was wrong. A barrier wouldn’t save her if she was right.

Hesitantly, Kagome took a few steps back, watching as the eyes narrowed at her movements. It apparently did not like how wary Kagome seemed. Miko or no Miko, the demon decided, she is still human. Humans are fearful.

Kagome took another step back, only to slip and fall ungracefully on her behind. She groaned and blushed from the embarrassment of the situation. Her gaze returned to the eyes, only to find that they were gone. She just guessed that the demon grew bored. She shrugged it off and got up.

When she turned, she collided with a solid body. Her gaze snapped up as she began falling back. A golden gaze caught her sapphire one, just as strong arms caught hold of her petite body. The demon hauled her body up until he was sure she was standing solidly and would not fall. He let his arms fall away from her. The woman was, for a human, beautiful. Her ebony hair was thick and had a slight curl to it. Woman he had seen had thin and straight hair. Her sapphire eyes were also a mystery to him. He did not see them often. Her body was petite and she had ivory skin. A faint blush lit up her cheeks.

Her smell was another thing that appealed to him. It was sweet, but not sickly sweet like some females he had the displeasure of meeting. It was that of a cherry blossom tree and the forest berries.

Kagome took in everything that this demon was. His golden, almost molten, eyes never left hers. His long silver hair flowed down his straight back. The paleness of his skin was familiar to Kagome, but what wasn’t was the warm look of him, not to mention he looked younger. His eyes weren’t cruel and cold as he stared the miko down, merely curious. He was still unbelievably tall to her. Then again, Kagome knew she was small, especially to  demon.

He seemed to be lacking the armour he usually wore. Even his kimono was different than the one in the slight future. The main colour of the kimono was pale blue, while a jagged spiral circling the sleeves up to where his elbow is. He still had the puffy pants though. Kagome couldn’t get over how he looked different to her without that scowl she had grown accustomed to. She didn’t miss the cold look he usually had.

“Sesshomaru,” she whispered, only to have his warm molten eyes widen in surprise.

OOOoooOOO

Well, I hoped you liked the chapter. I have great hopes for this story. I hope I can get the next chapter out soon, but I don’t know if I will be able to. You know, with school and all.
