Out Of The Ashes

Chapter One

Sesshoumaru stood at the edge of his lands staring into the distance. The air was restless this night. There was no sounds, no movement but he could sense the uneasiness of the forest. He wasn’t sure what brought him from the palace on this moonless night. With Naraku dead and the shikon no tama freed by the miko his days had grown restless. Too long had he wandered and left his lands unattended. Little had he known just how out of control they had become. Venom dripped from his fingertips as he thought about what he had come back to. Ransacked ningen villages, fighting between the youkai, and the greatest sin more hanyou births then he could believe.

A scream pierced the night causing him to stop as he turned to go back towards the castle. Ningens, he thought as he sniffed the air. Sneering he turned again to head back to the castle. Let the ningens deal with their own kind. He had the misfortune of having their villages marring his land but he would not trouble himself with their petty disputes. A surge of power flared quickly that had him stopping once more. He recognized the power as being that of the miko that his hanyou sibling traveled with. Turning once more towards the woods that hid the ningens he searched for his brother or the others in their pack. The miko was alone; curiosity got the best of him as he moved quickly and silently through the woods towards the commotion.

Deep in the woods he found the ningens. Ten men hovered over their fallen victim. He caught a glimpse of red material out of the corner of his eyes. “You dare to trespass on this Sesshoumaru's lands, Ningens?” Anger seeped through him. Terror filled the ningens eyes as they turned to face the lord of the western lands. They had known when the girl had ran this way that she must be seeking out the brother of the hanyou that she had traveled with but they had caught her quickly and had hoped to be gone before the lord sensed their presence.

“M-m-my lord.” One of them bowed the others following suit. “We apologize.”

Sesshoumaru glanced at the body of the girl she lay sprawled on the ground. Her body lay on the ground contorted and lifeless.  The air was thick with the scent of blood that called to his youkai. His eyes flashed blood red and claws dripped with poison as he struggled with his beast. The ningens sensing their deaths ran drawing his beast out even more. It had been too long since he had a decent fight. Quickly over took the ningens. His claws tearing them apart, his beast savoring the screams and the pleas of the cowards as he took them to their deaths. Had they listened to the miko's pleas? He wondered, though it shocked him to even have the thought cross his mind. He started to return to himself as the last ningen tried desperately to drag what was left of his legless body away.

“Please… please lord Sesshoumaru….” The man begged clawing his way over the ground faster. Amused Sesshoumaru watched for a minute before drawing his sword and killing the pleading ningen mid sentence. With a shake of his head he turned to head back to his castle when he caught sight again of the miko.  She had died on her stomach and looked as if she had been trying to crawl away on of her arms were outstretched as if she were reaching for something. His head turned looking in that direction and then he heard it the yip.

With the tip of his sword he nudged the branches of bushes back and saw the yellow book bag. Another yip called out with the tip of the sword he flipped back the cover and saw the newborn hanyou swaddled in InuYasha’s haori blinking up at him with the miko’s round blue eyes. Staring up at the youkai the hanyou gave another yip and then stuffed his small fist in his mouth as the youkai stared at him in wonder. Muttering a curse he gripped his father’s sword tensaiga and headed back to the miko with one swipe the demons that would take her soul were gone and she was healed and began to stir. Her eyes flickered open and she saw who stood above her. “Sesshoumaru…” she whispered softly almost sounding relieved.
