Chapter Ninety Three

“I… I don’t even know you.”

“Who am I?” He asked her seriously, his body language instantly locking down and he pushed himself away from her and by being in such close proximity she felt the awesome power he wielded by the simple gesture. His muscles moved like steel cords, felt just as powerful too as she watched his shadowed face. He was now straight armed, his body still caging herself but not a single part of himself was now touching her.

Her mouth opened and her throat worked as half-finished and attempted words tumbled brokenly from her lips, “…I…. Don’t…. y-you….. I can’t….”

He snarled slowly, his lip lifting a growl next and finally a full on snarl that ripped through the silence of the room and cast them instantly into an abyss as if they’d been sucked in a black hole. She squealed as unseen winds buffeted them from all sides, pulling harshly at their clothes and words as he began to yell at her, “Such impudence is beneath us both and this one will not listen to such drivel!” He was furious, his words were soft and spoken only to be heard above the raging winds in the inky blackness that threatened to consume her, but his body shook outside of the horrible torrents. His rage was buffeted by another unforeseen and it frightened her in the core of her being the idea of what terrible wrath this man could unleash at a whim.

Who was he!?

Suddenly they were back in the apartment; his rage was cooling at a drastic and impossible rate until nothing was left. He stood before her devoid of any feeling and yet her heart thundered on and her stomach still felt bottomless. He loomed and yet appeared to crumble about her with a frustration that she’d seen in people who were desperate and were near their resolves end.

“Who are you?” She whispered and flinched with a squeal when he reacted as quick as lightning; the words had barely left her lips when he punched the wall with a hiss of power as a toxic smell swelled near her head. She refused to look away from the bowed head of the man who fought a trauma within himself. She moved to touch him but the room suddenly began to bleed dark, trembling as if caught in a thousand earth quakes. She gasped an stepped closer to him, the fear of being alone overriding her senses of clinging to the very thing that frightened her in the first place.

She touched his shirt, curled her fingers into the warm fabric and suddenly the apartment was sparkling pristine; filled with a sense of grounded calm that befuddled her already panicked and strained nerves. She almost fell against him with the relief of safety when he completed her thought and crushed her against him.

“Sesshomaru?” She asked softly as he suddenly melted against her until she was loomed over him; a child again. Yet it seemed normal here, his endless shifting form and the seamless transition from one illusion to another.

“… I have a horrible secret.” He whispered in the most broken of sounds, the child’s voice distorting the words with an innocence she knew him not to have.

He clung to her tighter, “I… I’m afraid you will hate me for it.”

“Sesshomaru, we all have secrets. I keep my secrets in my heart for safekeeping… If it is horrible, you do not have to tell me-.”

“My secret is about you…. This place, and me.”

Kagome frowned and looked down at the trembling child in her arms and knew the image was false; the feelings were supplemented to suit her instincts of nurturing and yet she found herself succumbing to them regardless. She squeezed her eyes closed as that ‘something’ that eluded her, swam close enough to her surface see flashes of its truth.

Silver and gold; scarlet and opal. The beast was beautiful, deadly and breathtaking. Was that him? Was Sesshomaru such a beast?

The child clung to her sharply, with a desperation that belayed the innocence of his youth; and she knew then that the child she clung to was no more than a puppet. As she stroked the hair of the crying child that whispered of terrible horrors that had been done to her and himself, her confusion went to the back-burner as her mind worked over the new development of such a profound discovery.

This puppet-master… could be of a few things… yet which one was he?

“I… I had to bring you here; I cannot hide it from you any longer.”

“Hide…?

He looked up at her and the apartment around them shivered and suddenly the creaking of the door made them both turn to the eerie sound, “It is about to begin, Kagome. Are you ready?”

Smog of black slowly creeped from the adjacent hallway, it curled upward about the frame of the door as if unable to cross the threshold, “We are safe in here, if you are not ready.”

“What’s out there Sesshomaru?” They both stared as the smog grew more aggressive. Sesshomaru sighed, “Our dreams lie beyond this room. All dreams make the Maikai; but not just any dreams. It is the dreams of Nightmares that sustain the world of Demons. It is the terror and fears that borne the beasts of your reality.”

It was the first time he spoke of it, and the word ‘reality’ rang so close to home that which eluded her nearly broke surface and smacked her in the face. But just as she reached towards the murky depths of the hidden, the frame of the door exploded and the smog growled menacingly.

“It cannot enter here, Kagome.” He said to her, suddenly her age again as he knelt beside her. She gasped and leaned away from him; he glanced at her and then back to the smog as he stood up and offered her his hand.
