“Evolution, it allows creation to reshape and adapt to its surroundings in order to survive.” He stated simply, as if that had answered her question and though at the time it made no sense to her, later in life she would come to find a strange light in this moment.

So she nodded sagely and used her knowledge of the twenty first century to confuse him just as badly as he confused her, “Natural selection dictates, that by virtue of environment pressures and genetic factors, select the most favorable individuals in a species, and the most favorable species in a phylum for the next generation resulting… in an apex…. Predator…” Her eyes dulled as her mind suddenly processed what she had chosen to throw at him. Between wondering just what the hell she was talking about and the realization that she was in the lap of such a creature now, almost made her numb enough to miss a sudden flock of geese as they pierced the clouds off to the right of them. Almost close enough to reach out and touch. They honked obnoxiously at the couple and it was the Western Lord alone who was not startled as both the animals and the girl had started each other. She pressed back into him sharply, and his superior reflexes alone allowed him to seamlessly move her hair and his sharp claws out from between them while still continuing the braid he had started moments earlier.

“Do you understand the implications to what you have just said to this Sesshomaru?” He asked softly, his fingers working slowly and deftly in her hair.

“Do you?” She whispered back, truly only half concerned with his assumption of what she had said, and was instead worried about why she had chosen the subject of ‘Natural Selection’. “Ne, Sesshomaru-sama? What did you mean about adapting to survive? That doesn’t answer my question at all.” She grumbled, watching the brilliance of the moon and the stars. When was the last time she had felt this relaxed? No one other than her mother and maybe one of her girlfriends from school had never braided or played with her hair just because. Yet here she sat, discussing things with the Western Lord while he braided her hair, floating above the clouds and in front of an impossibly large full moon.

“Perhaps then… you are not ready to know.” He said softly on a sigh as he placed her braid carefully over her shoulder and allowed her to sink against him without hindrance to share his body heat with her against the extreme temperatures, and flared his ki a bit more than he had been to keep her warm as well.

“Ready to know…? Why are you always so cryptic?” She asked, taking another sip of her eggnog as the liquid began to chill, “Mou, it doesn’t taste good cold!” She pouted, feeling the thick and rich substance slide down her throat, much cooler than it should have been.

“Do you know how to make fire, Priestess?” He asked and for the first but not the last time, Kagome was amazed she was holding a conversation with him and the sound of his voice made her nervous.

“Of course, friction creates fire.”

Sesshomaru lifted his right hand off his knee and turned it palm up at its center a small flame erupted, small enough to fit in his hand. She reached out to it, “it is-.” She cut herself off when she nearly burned herself her eyes wide as she twisted her ships and shoulders to peer at him, “But I thought your affinity was with poison, not fire?” She observed him; the expression on his face was exactly the same it had always been; detached from emotion, cold calculation and minute curiosity..

“Do no certain types of poison catch flame? According to the pattern of the fuel, fire is an element easily manipulated and conformed; if one knows how fire is made.” She understood immediately and without preamble she said, “Oh I see, ‘you’ are the fuel and you used your youki to speed up the space above your palm fast enough to make s spark; at the same time you used your poison as an accelerant!” She was touching her lips with her index finger and bent oddly around his hand as if to see every angle of the flame and if he was not surprised or put off by her unveiling his trick, her neck decision surely might do the job. Without hesitation after her discovery she placed the thermos in his hand, watching as the flame molded around the tube and kept hold of the string to keep it from bunging and as a way to transport he scalding cup once it had been reheated.
