Quiet Blessings by Sihara

Quiet Blessings

The maid had already fled-off on some imaginary errand so she could go peek at the visiting Wolf Lord. A thin trickle of cold sweat found its way down Kagome's spine-she couldn't figure all this out on her own! Setting her jaw, she carefully tried to sort through the fine layers of patterned silk, but her fear of damaging the ancient kimono had her fingers shaking and tears of frustration slipped over her cheeks. The whole court would decide she was unworthy…that she had shamed him.

A sharp clack of wood had her turning in surprise-She stood imperiously in the doorway.

"Silence your display. Servants are worthless these days, and besides, they wouldn't have enough skill to transform you into a worthy candidate regardless."

Kagome was banished to the baths to be made meticulously clean once again. Then, slim fingers tipped with carefully manicured razor sharp claws deftly twisted dark hair into a deceptively simple arrangement, securing it with a shimmering hairpin. The gossamer layers of Kimono went perfectly, one after another and the obi knot had the same understated elaborate detail as her hair. Hard gold eyes criticized each element, before the woman announced,

"No jewelry, the accent in your hair will be enough. We don't want you pretending to be more than you are-but we can't have you looking the chambermaid either."

The few touches of rouge were sparing, the thinnest tint of pale pink to the lips, a line of red in a shade to match his carefully drawn over the line of her upper lashes.

"You'll have to do. Do try not to trip."

The final effect was subtle, and elegant at the same time. Kagome was warmed by the realization that her betrothal to Sesshoumaru finally had his Mother's blessing, but She had already gone.
