I stood in the palace garden, watching the sunrise, and thinking of the last night's scene in the Middle Lands. After going back in the palace, my restlessness made sleeping impossible. The entire night I doubted my decision of leaving Kagome, and I worried endlessly. However, pride held me back from going to the Middle. I lifted my gaze to the bright sun, and wondered how she was faring when the bell rang.

Breakfast time.

I knew that I couldn't attend that meal so I told a servant to inform the demonesses of my absence.

Slowly, and with an absent mind, I decided to go back to my chamber. Think about the affairs of the West. Read some scrolls. Take your mind away from her.

Along the cold corridors, I saw Sango, which was also Kagome's servant, and I stopped her. "Have you seen your Lady?"

Sango kept her head bowed and she shook her head. "I have not seen her since last night, my lord."

I narrowed my eyes. She has yet to come back…

"Why would you be looking for the woman you accused of treason?" Father's voice made me turn my head to the right.

I looked at him impassively. He was becoming more unbearable this days. Sango scrambled to get away, aware of the tense atmosphere between us.

"Why would you care for a hanyou girl?" He continued, his eyes mocking me, and his posture challenging.

I shot him a deadly glare before huffing. "I do not care. I am simply being proprietary on what belongs to me."

Father raised his brows, challenging my statement. "I doubt that."

"Do not compare this Sesshomaru to you, weakened by unnecessary attachments and emotions," I sneered.

With a cold sidelong glance, I started to walk away but he stopped me with his retort. "Pathetic child, terrified of mere emotions."

Father left with a shake of his head. Yet after he was gone, I remained in the middle of the hallway with my youki swirling around in anger. I closed my eyes and sighed. Battling with myself for hours created too much frustration that made me feel aggressive.

This would not do. Waiting for Kagome to come back would only amplify my impatience. With a sigh of defeat, I walked to a window and looked at the darkening sky. The bright sun becoming obscured by black clouds. Grimacing slightly, I jumped outside and flew to the Middle Lands.

When I was only a few miles away, I heard a howl that must have come from a wolf. I lowered myself to the ground, hiding my aura and scent as I do so. I darted past the thick lines of trees and traced Kagome's scent.

I stopped behind a tree and saw a wolf-youkai in its full form laying on the ground. Its crimson eyes scanning the surroundings, seemingly on guard of something with high importance.

Kagome.

She lost control. But…how could she transform? Hanyous do not have enough strength to fully transform. How is this possible?

The first few drops of rain touched my cheek, and a thunder broke through the sky, followed by a lightning.

She howled again, her youki lashing in circles around her, and her posture looked tensed.

What made her tense?

I scanned the surroundings, my nose sniffing the air, and my ears straining to hear any sound aside from the pouring rain. Hnn. The rain put her on edge. Similar to Inu, water dulls the wolves' senses as well.

I cracked my claws, staying in the cold and pouring rain would make her sick. I must bring her back to her senses. The Middle Land was completely and utterly destroyed. Rotting corpses, and hunting vultures littered around. Certainly, this was bad for her.

I stepped out of the treeline, exactly on her line of vision. She growled, crimson eyes fixed on me unblinkingly.

I stared back, swirling my youki to show my dominance. She bared her fangs, and I bared mine. I am alpha. My imposing figure told her this, and yet she fearlessly glared back.

Even without rational thought, and even when ruled by instinct alone, you still defy me.

Slowly, Kagome stood up. She towered over me, but she wasn't as huge as I was when fully transformed. I released more of my youki, pushing hers back easily, and that was when my eyes catch an orange ball lying beneath her.

That is what she is protecting. The little kitsune.

I sniffed the air. Death. The kitsune is long dead. She couldn't accept such fact.

I took a step toward the kitsune but she stepped in front of me, snarling, and trying to shield the dead child.

We were both soaked in the pouring rain and the cold wind blowed around us.

I raised my hands, letting the green-coloured acid flow, and I growled. She looked at my raised hand. I can hurt you. I slowly put it down, the acid disappearing, and my aura calming. But I won't. I tried communicating this to her.

Just as I was thinking that I was getting through her, sounds of heavy paws padding through the forest reached our ears.

I leaped backwards to the thick forest. I hid both my aura and scent. The heavy rain already erasing traces of me as I took cover behind the thick trunks of trees, watching the scene unfold before me.

Four fully transformed wolf-youkais emerged from the treeline opposite of me, quickly spreading and surrounding Kagome.

The last wolf-youkai to emerge was as massive as I was when fully transformed. With narrowed eyes, I recognized it to be the Lord Akio of the East. Her Father.

Kagome launched herself at one of the wolf-youkai and I noticed that her fur seemed to glow when she moves. It looks almost black but some light made it look bluish when it motion. Just the same color as her raven hair. She moved fluidly and gracefully. As if she was dancing in the pouring rain. But she never moved far from the dead kitsune.

The Lord of the East growled at her and she growled back. He released a massive youki and pushed Kagome back. She managed to dodge the first lashes but the last one caught her in shoulders.

She whined and whimpered but fought hard even in though the wide gash kept bleeding when she moved.

One of the wolf-youkais from her right slammed itself against her, and they toppled on the ground. Trying to bite each other's throat. Another wolf-youkai with violet eyes jumped forward, as if protecting Kagome, and nudging the attacker to stop. With a hard shove, Kagome landed on her side, her energy depleting, making healing her incredibly slow. At this state, healing herself might even be impossible.

Another wolf-youkai stepped forward and transformed into humanoid form. It was the same girl who had the kitsune in her arms last night.

She groveled on the ground, and pleaded them to be gentle with Kagome. "My lady needs looking after, my lord. Please…I…I…Ah Chen…had been with her for years. She is just…" Sad. Kagome is sad. I finished inside my head.

The Lord of the East grunted and stepped beside Kagome. He nudged her. She snarled but it eventually morphed into pitiful whining.

The girl named Ah Chen lifted the dead kitsune but the Lord of the East growled at her, so with tears in her eyes, she put him down.

The others went to Kagome, trying to make her stand. She opened her crimson eyes, which were full of rage and grief and fixed her gaze on the dead kitsune. Another howl rocked the surroundings and I did not miss the look of affection in her crimson eyes before she finally lost her consciousness, letting the others take her away.

I watched as they disappeared with her limp form, and suddenly, a scene, a memory that took place a long time ago flashed before my eyes, a memory that I buried deep and I closed my eyes…

"Mother!" Young Sesshomaru greeted as quietly as he can while trying his best to remove the excitement in his voice. His Mother rarely visits his Wing in the Palace, and yet she is here today.

"Sesshomaru, dear." His Mother drawled, her eyes drifted to the book on the desk in front of him. "Have you been studying well?"

He almost beamed but caught himself just in time. A shy smile painted in face though, as he answers, "Yes, Mother. I have read about dragons, and they amazing!" He snatched the book up and ran to her, lifting the pages that depicts about the dragons. "Loo—" His lips froze and his voice trailed off when he realized his mistake.

His Mother looked down at her nose to him, remaining aloof with her cold eyes. But she gave a fake sweet smile. "Oh my dear. Ranting about inconsequential matter is not an attitude of a future Lord. Reading those books are for knowledge, not for gushing." She rolled her eyes, pretending to be playful. With a gentle tap on the top of his hair, she strolled out of his room.

Alone, again. Sesshomaru sullenly went back on his chair and controlled the urge to cry.

I opened my eyes, shaking the memory away, and took a step forward. The rain was slowly turning to a drizzle but the atmosphere still felt ominous and heavy.

I went beside the dead kitsune's body. Shippou. She called him.

I looked at him for a while. "How fortunate this little boy is to be the recipient of such unwavering affection." I murmured to myself.

Slowly, I released Tensaiga from its sheath, and raised it above him. "Such affection will go to waste if you stay dead, kitsune…"

Pain. Blinding pain. Millions of blinding pain. That was all I could feel and my mind seemed too foggy to register anything else.

I tried opening my eyes but my lids felt cemented. I tried to speak but my tongue felt thick and heavy. Without these two sense, I leaned heavily on my hearing, which was not functioning that well either, but it was enough to know that I was, in this weakened state, still alive. Somehow.

"What had transpired that made her lose control this way?" I heard Father asked harshly.

"The attack in the Middle heavily depleted her energy as she tried to fight them off, my lord." Ah Chen answered. "There…there is a boy. A little kitsune-youkai she saved years before and she was heavily attached to him. He…he died…"

Silence. Then my brother, Miroku, spoke gently. "My sister have suffered then."

"She failed to summon her miko energy so…" Ah Chen trailed off.

The Lord of the East growled, his ever-present anger showing again, and he spat, "I never wanted her to use her reiki again. Ever. This is dangerous for her. She might…die."

Die? Why would I die with the use of my miko energy?

"This is certainly a sad news—that she failed to save the child—but I agree with Father…" Miroku said firmly. Their voices already fading and I knew that I was losing the battle to stay awake. "Her reiki. It might save her for a time but it will also be her doom…"

Why would it be my doom? I want to ask them. Please tell me. I want to demand. But soon, I submerged to full darkness again where the only sounds I could hear were Shippou's voice and Mother's lullaby.
