~ooO Dance Ooo~
Eri sipped her ice coffee slowly, examining Kagome through lowered lashes. She was toying with the red ribbon encircling her neck. Eri wondered if there was something special about the ribbon-choker. She had never seen Kagome without it ever since she announced that she was engaged. Sometimes she played with the ribbon, sliding her finger under the band back and forth against the silky material. Eri didn’t see any sign of a clasp, or how the ribbon was secured around Kagome’s neck. And she was always wearing it, even when the colour did not exactly match her outfit. Eri wondered if Kagome’s mysterious fiancé had given her the ribbon-choker-necklace as a gift. Where was the idiot anyways? He should be here helping Kagome pull herself together!
“Kagome?”
Wide blue eyes turned towards Eri. “Yes?”
“Is everything okay?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean with your fiancé? You seem rather worried, and you haven’t said anything about him,” Eri said carefully.
The corners of Kagome’s lips turned downwards. “I still haven’t heard from him,” she admitted.
Eri straightened, her sense for gossip quivering.
“What do you mean?” Ayumi was the one to ask in her gentle way.
Kagome sighed. “He’s in some jungle in South America. There are no telephones or computers with internet where he is. It takes weeks to get to a town for supplies.”
Yuka wrinkled her nose. “What’s he doing in South America?”
After a pause Kagome responded stiltedly. “It is…a family matter.”
All the girls fell silent. They were modern girls but they understood the obligations of duty and responsibility to family and kin. Finally Yuka spoke.
“Well, he won’t want you to be so down and unhappy.” Her expression brightened. “Why don’t we go to a party and have some fun?”
Kagome’s expression turned wary. “I don’t think that’s a good idea guys.”
“Come on,” Yuka coaxed. “You don’t have to dance with a guy if you don’t want to. You can dance with us, or by yourself.”
“Your fiancé will not want you to be so run down and anxious,” Ayumi pointed out.
“It will help occupy your mind, just for a little while,” Eri added.
Kagome looked around torn. Their bright, urging expressions sealed the deal.
“All right. When and where?”
“Mariko is having a party this Saturday. Her father’s place at six.”
