Riku Ryuu's Prompt - Ice Cream

Kagome did not know how long she had been sitting in the window seat. Only that she was sorta hungry. She stumbled down the stairs and began searching for something to eat. She had just about settled on an apple when the front door opened and closed. Seconds later her mother entered the kitchen. She looked surprised but pleased to see Kagome downstairs.

“Hello Kagome. You might want to put that apple aside for now.” Seeing her daughter’s confused look, she explained. “Souta bought something special for you.”

“What?”

“Ice cream. Your favourite flavour too. Pistachio.”

Kagome blinked back tears. Souta hated pistachio. Whenever he got the chance he always bought chocolate fudge ice cream with brownie chunks and walnuts.

“He used his own money too,” her mother added casually.

That was enough to make Kagome feel extra guilty. Her little brother had used his own money, cash he had earned from doing odd jobs, to buy her favourite ice cream, to make her feel better. And she hadn’t bothered getting out of bed and having a real conversation with him.

Pleased with the effect of her words, Kun Loon urged Kagome to serve herself. “It will make Souta happy. He’s been checking the freezer every day to see if the seal is broken.” Then her mother grinned impishly. “Now that it is he’s definitely going to help himself, even though pistachio isn’t his favourite flavour.”
