The tip of a pink tongue poked out the corner of Kagome Higurashi’s mouth. A small furrow creased her brow as she concentrated intently on the booklet on the table before her. The minute hand of the old-fashioned clock crept across the white circular face.

“Time!”

Kagome put her pencil down and handed the exam booklet and scanner card to the proctor with a huge sigh of relief. This was the last exam for her current year. She just had to complete one more set of exams to get the equivalent of a high school diploma. And it would be a huge relief for both herself and her family. She had already shamed them by falling so behind and nearly flunking out. She would do anything to ensure it never happened again.

The young woman was one who was always harder on herself than others. Ever since her mother had arranged for her to complete her credits through correspondence and home-schooling she had pushed herself on all fronts, the shard-hunting quest in the past and her studies in the future – she had not wanted to fail in either one – and it produced results.

She had somehow managed to progress much faster in her studies than planned, than even her old school friends, mostly thanks to Sesshoumaru who was very supportive of her academic efforts. As a home-schooled student and Sesshoumaru’s mate there were no more jumping through hoops, to satisfy InuYasha who always wanted to be off hunting shards, Sango Miroku and Kaede who wanted her to focus on her miko training, school teachers who wanted her to hand homework in every other day, or old school friends who wanted to hang out at WacDonalds or the mall. She no longer had to face her old friends and lie and pretend and hide. She was completely focused on getting her diploma and then returning to her life in the past, to her Feudal Era friends and family. Soon she could go home to Rin, Shippo, and Sesshoumaru.
