I sighed deeply, still wondering to myself why I had taken a new route home on this moonless night. The wind was bitter, the first snow would soon fall much to the discomfort of the ningens. Most youkai, like myself, could not be bothered by something so futile as nature and a little cold.

I listened to the sound of my boots scraping the concrete of the side walk. Flexing my long, deadly claws, my body ached to spill the blood of an organism. It had been centuries since I had been able to kill something and it was still hard to adjust to living among so many ningens.

I closed my deep golden as a strong gust swept through the streets and caused my long silver hair to swirl around my body. As I opened my eyes a muffled sound came to my sensitive ears.

Pausing for a second, I recognized the sound of a struggle and the stifled screams of an onna. Another sigh escaped my lips. This really was my lucky day. I had no true urge to save another ningen. I was a youkai after all; they were none of my concern.

The longer I stood there, deciding what to do, the more I thought of my ningen mate and adoptive daughter. My blood began to boil and the moments I stood there waiting, all through they seemed like forever only lasted a couple seconds.

A power coursed through my veins that I had never felt so strongly before, not even when I fought against the evil kumo hanyou, who had endangered my small family.

My legs seemed to move without my approval and I jumped over the bushes hiding the attacker from my view. My large body slammed into his, a sound of surprise escaping his lips, and we rolled to the ground, away from the terrified onna.

Our heavy bodies rolled in the dirt, the sound of clothes tearing and the dense panting of a fight. After struggling with the weaker youkai for a couple more minutes, I threw him into the street and away from me; taking up a predators crouch with my glistening fangs bared.

The youkai picked himself up and growled at me, but ran in the opposite direction.

I slowly straightened myself before turning to look in the direction of the onna. She hid behind a tree, her entire body trembling, clutching another body to her chest. I could not see either well nor could I find a scent over the mixture of emotions.

Taking a deep breath to calm myself, I spoke in a soothing tone, adding a purr to my voice, “It’s okay. He ran away. You’re safe now.”

The onna did not seem to react and I had to draw patience not to snap at her.

“You’re safe. I won’t let anything happened to you,” I purred softly. The older onna looked up, her hair falling around her face as she turned to look in my direction.

Standing up with shaky legs, she stepped towards with the young child still cradle to her chest.

“Mate,” her confused, but relieved voice came.

My golden eyes widen. Stepping into the light was my battered mate, holding our adoptive daughter. Tears swelled in her beautiful, tired blue eyes and she ran to me, unsteady on her already clumsy feet.

She fell into my chest and sobbed as I wrapped my arms around my small family. “You’re safe, Kagome.”

Sooo…what do ya think? Let me know pretty please with whip cream and cherries on top.
