Finding “Wonderland”
“Oh, Kagome-sama, Rin wishes that she could visit wonderland like Alice!” The little girl giggled as she ran ahead into the field of flowers the group was to make camp near.
Kagome watched as the child lay down in front of particularly colorful patch of wildflowers and started to sing a muddled version of one of the songs from the movie they had just finished. She brought back a portable DVD player from her time with a few of her favorite movies. Soon the batteries for the player would run out, and she wondered if she should even try to return to her time for more. It was becoming harder and harder for her to decide just where she wanted to be.
Most of the movies were the ones she grew up watching as a child, and Rin had been quite drawn to Alice in Wonderland. Kagome often wondered if she liked it so much because of the singing flowers or the talking animals. Her main caregivers were a complaining toad and a dog demon after all. At that moment her mind decided to conjure up an image of the kappa and a transformed demon lord wearing top hats and trousers while drinking tea and eating cake. The image brought forth a small fit of giggles she wasn’t quite quick enough to contain, and as she looked to her side she was met with the curious gaze of her stoic companion.
“Its n-nothing,” she managed to stammer out as she tried to compose herself.
“Hn. This Sesshoumaru would never venture to know what goes on it that head of yours, Miko.” He drawled.
“….wha-hey!” Kagome was on the verge of feeling insulted until she saw the corner of his mouth lift into a smirk.
“Who would have thought that the Great Lord of the West had a sense of humor.” she teased.
Sesshoumaru looked at her for a moment, a thoughtful expression on his face, and then added, “There are many things you do not know about me, Kagome.”
She paused slightly at hearing him say her true name. He was using it more and more often, and she couldn’t quite explain the feeling that bloomed within her chest at hearing her name come from his lips.
Not long after the defeat of Naraku, she had begun traveling with the group the little girl called “family”. She found herself thinking of them in the same fashion more and more often. Her friends had paired off and started families of their own, both in the future and in the past. Inuyasha had found his match in one of the village girls of Edo, and Kagome couldn’t find it in herself to be upset about it. After three years of traveling with the Hanyou, her attraction for him had slowly faded into a companionable friendship. Sango, of course, finally gave in to Miroku’s “charms” and they were married with their first child on the way.
Traveling with the Daiyoukai’s group had started as a way to keep Rin company, the little girl was getting older and often sought out Kagome when the group would venture near the village of Edo. The little girl had begged her to travel with them on one visit, and in seeing no objection from the demon lord she decided to pack up and journey with them for a time. The time Kagome spent with them grew longer and longer as she realized that traveling with Sesshoumaru was not as uncomfortable as she thought it would be. Annoying Kappa aside, the group was actually quite easy to settle into. Rin was a sweet girl, if not a little rambunctious. When the Daiyoukai wasn’t busy observing his surroundings, he actually was a decent conversationalist, and although she had tried to keep it from happening Kagome often caught herself admiring Sesshoumaru during his musings. It was hard if not impossible not to notice his beauty.
The group found a large tree at the edge of the meadow Rin was currently playing in to make camp. After setting out all the things they would need for the night, Kagome took up the spot next to the already lounging dog demon. While looking out upon the bright blooms of the field, Kagome’s thoughts began to drift to her family in the future. She often felt guilty about not returning home, but it just didn’t seem to fit anymore. Her grades were too poor for her to get into a decent university, and as she spent more time in the past her friends from the future had become distant.
Kagome was not the only one thinking of the future. While she sat deep in thought, Sesshoumaru took his time to observe the features his newest traveling companion. The Miko had been traveling with his group for many months, and he was beginning to feel for the little human. She was very capable of carrying on a meaningful conversation, and often brought up topics from her time that peeked his interest. Not only was she intelligent he had to admit that she was quite attractive for a human female. Demonesses were indeed beautiful, but they often lacked the intellectual capacity this girl seemed to possess.
Both adults were interrupted from thought as Rin plopped down in front of them with arms brimming with wildflowers.
“Those are lovely, Rin!” Kagome commented with a smile upturning her lips.
“Thank you, Kagome-sama! Would you like to help Rin make some flower crowns?” The girl said as she bounced up and down with energy.
At the sight of the Miko’s nod, the little girl squealed and set about making her first creation.
After a few minutes of lacing the flowers back and forth the little girl paused with a wondering look on her face and then looked up at Kagome.
Scrunching up her small nose she asked, “ Kagome-sama…is there really such a place as Wonderland?”
Kagome thought for a moment about how to answer the girls question. “Well, there might not be a place out there exactly like Alice’s Wonderland, but I’m sure you could find a place here to call your own.”
“…but these flowers can’t talk, and the only talking animal I know is Master Jaken…” The comment earned her a squawk from the mentioned Kappa that was quickly ended with a level glare from the demon lord.
“Your Wonderland may not be the same as Alice’s, Rin. It’s a place where wonderful things happen, but those things don’t have to be impossible. Your Wonderland could be a place where you feel you are happiest, a place where you are surrounded by the people you care for, and a place where on occasion spectacular things happen. You will find your Wonderland one day, Rin.”She smiled wistfully.
“Have you found your Wonderland, Kagome-sama?” Rin asked curiously.
“…not yet, Rin.” Kagome said simply, and she couldn’t help the sudden feeling of melancholy that overtook her. She was beginning to wonder if there ever would be a “Wonderland” for her.
The Daiyoukai sat silently as he observed the interaction between the two females finding himself wrapped up in the Miko’s explanation. He did not like the feeling of sadness that was radiating from the girl, and knew he had to find a way to rid her of it.
Later that night after his group had fallen asleep, the demon lord rose gracefully from his spot beside the tree he had been resting against that evening. He made his way over to Kagome’s sleeping bag and bent down next to her gently nudging her back into the waking world.
Fully conscious, but a bit groggy, the Miko looked up to the demon lord and then scanned the camp surrounding her with tired eyes.
“What is it, Sesshoumaru?” Her voice was still raspy with sleep.
“You will follow this Sesshoumaru.” After he said it he turned his heel and began to walk into the dark forest.
When Kagome hesitated he added, “ I have already told Jaken to look after Rin. Come, Miko.”
At his assurance Kagome rose from her bedding and caught up with the now silent Daiyoukai. After walking for what she was sure had to have been hours they finally made it into a clearing where she could hear the sound of running water. She quickly spotted Sesshoumaru standing next to what looked like a small pond, but she couldn’t make out much because of the cloud that was covering the light of the full moon. Walking closer to the demon lord she looked at him curiously, but before she could say anything the cloud that had been covering the moon drifted past. The sight she was greeted with forced a gasp past her lips. The small pond was fed by a small rocky waterfall. Water lilies floated on top of the slightly rippling surface, and under the light of the moon they seemed to take on an iridescent sheen. The most spectacular view had to be the demon lord himself. He looked so perfect standing in front of the scene glowing in the light from the moon’s beams. He was achingly beautiful, and Kagome’s heart clenched.
“W-what is this place?” She managed to choke out as she stared into his eyes.
He was silent for many moments, and she thought perhaps that he would not answer her. Then he stepped closer to her leaving only a foot between the two and forced Kagome to lean back to continue looking in his eyes.
Looking directly at the Miko with a contented expression on his face he said. “It is this Sesshoumaru’s Wonderland.”
Kagome’s breath hitched. She felt so honored that he would share a place so special with her.
With a wide smile she looked around the area one more time asking him absently, “What makes this place your Wonderland?”
A touch on her cheek brought her focus back to the male in front of her and she realized that his hand had found its way to her face and was caressing it tenderly.
Slowly he leaned forward, and she was sure that she must be dreaming.
He paused when his lips were hovering just over hers and whispered the answer to her question with one quiet word.
“You.” With that his lips finally found Kagome’s fully.
As her eyes drifted closed to the sensation of his velvet lips on hers she thought to herself,
‘I think I finally found my Wonderland.’
