After some time, a low buzzing noise was heard. Kagome stretched out a slender finger, letting something minute land on it soundlessly. Squinting against the unforgiving sun, Inuyasha saw that the thing, whatever it was, appeared human. A miniscule girl with fire red hair, onyx eyes and celestial features gazed at Kagome expectantly as she folded her delicate pearlescent wings, clicking her tongue rhythmically as the young woman cooed and petted the creature’s locks gingerly. Turning to Inuyasha, the little thing stuck her jade tongue at him and smiled smugly, making the inu look away with a huff.
“Ashi says that we are but less than a day away from the temple now.”
“What is she?” Inuyasha sneered in disgust, not really wanting to trust a thing that was barely bigger than his thumb.
“She? Hm.. interesting,” Kagome muttered, a playful grin pulling at the corners of her mouth.
“What do ya mean?”
“I see a little boy. They do like doing this.” she smiled, running her fingers through Ashi’s locks as the creature purred, twisting to accommodate itself better on its perch. “They morph into the form of a being you would feel most inclined to trust.”
“What is it?”
“I am unsure, but travelers value them incredibly for their ability to navigate. It can help, for a price.”
“And what would it require for its services?” Sesshomaru demanded, suspicious of the creature’s sharp teeth and even sharper eyes that glistened darkly.
Kagome fidgeted, shaking her sack off her shoulder. Rummaging in its depths, she finally emerged, grinning and victorious.
“This will do.”
Ashi screeched, snatching the shiny trinket out of Kagome’s hands. Biting and licking, twisting and turning, it finally deemed the item worthy. Squealing in delight, it flew up, motioning for the group to follow.
