Smoke and Flames

Disclaimers:: I do not own Inuyasha, Fallout, or Linkin Park. Thank you.

I hope you are in the mood for something a little sad... if not, then don't read this. (Of course, having this warning -after- the story doesn't do you much good now does it? XP)

This particular 250 word drabble is best when paired with Linkin Park's song Fallout. It's not quite the same length, but if you keep each in mind when listening/reading, I'm sure the effect will be quite strong.

Also, this is definitely not a traditional Inu/Kag pairing. This is Sess/Kag from the get-go.

Enjoy! Although I don't expect there to be errors, if you spot any please let me know.

Kagome strained to focus in the fog, looking for something familiar that she could use as a landmark to make her way out of this dream.

Inuyasha's solemn face swam in front of her for a moment, before becoming solid. She reached her hands out to rest on his shoulders as they materialized from the whiteness surrounding them.

He pulled away, with a devastatingly sad smile on his face, and shook his head when she made to follow him.

Kagome felt tears running down her face as she tried to understand what he meant, what he was doing.

He closed his eyes as though his heart might have shattered out of them if he'd kept them open any longer. His fists balled at his sides, and Kagome felt sourceless guilt well up within her.

Suddenly, there was a strong presence at her back. A protective, calm sturdy source of assurance in the silent storm of her heart. Sesshoumaru.

Kagome understood then, in a moment of epiphany, Inuyasha's strange behavior. She leaned back into the sturdy male presence behind her, and watched Inuyasha with sad eyes.

He smiled at her again, with sadness thick enough to stop her breath, before turning and walking way.

It was then that she realized he was not directly in front of her, but was actually on the far bank of a river. She turned her head to look for a way to cross, but all she saw was white, white, white...

and one burning bridge.
