Monster of a Mystery by Riku Ryuu

To Protect

This is for the Miraculous prompt. I have no idea how it turned out because it is too late for me to care. I'll fix it up another day if I have to.

Enjoy.

Kagome was sitting lazily on a bench, sketch pad opened on her lap. The page it was open to was already filled with sketches, very descriptive little drawings of everyone that had passed her seat on the way to see the museum’s latest hit. The Shikon no Tama was possibly the most popular item that the museum held, but Kagome still had no idea why so many people wanted to see a jewel that they could easily see online just as well. She shook her head and focused on another person to draw. It was not her job to worry about that, it was her job to worry about the jewel.

Miroku strolled up to her bench, dressed in causal black slacks and a blue dress shirt that had the first three buttons unbuttoned. Kagome looked up from her sketch long enough to send him a fake smile.

“What are you up to little girl?” Miroku asked teasingly before sitting down next to her. Kagome did not take offence; she had picked out a black t-shirt and holly jeans that combined to make her look like a teenager. There was makeup on her face, but it was put on thick like a stereotypical teen would have it.

“You are going to blow my cover Miroku.” She said sweetly. Miroku almost didn’t hear the threat in her voice but he knew Kagome well enough to find it.

“No, today I am a college Art teacher that wants to see what you have done. Throw in a little teacher student relationship and your cover is fine.”

Kagome’s cheeks heated in a blush, as if he had said something on the risqué side. She smiled at him shyly and looked back at her paper.

“Get lost. I don’t want you here when I am working because then I will have to worry about you. Sango would never forgive me if I let her boyfriend get hurt.” Kagome quickly started drawing another man that passed.

“Hm… Those are actually pretty good. Ever thought of giving up being a detective and changing to Art?”

“I said go. I don’t like working with amateurs.” Kagome hissed at him and sent him a glare. She figured even her cover would do the same under the circumstances. Miroku sighed before standing up.

“Fine, good luck.”

Kagome ignored the man as he walked off and continued to focus on the people around her. Chances were that one of them was her thief, and it was her job to stop whichever one he was. Actually, her hope was to capture Sesshomaru and collect the reward, but she had to take it one step at a time.

Kagome looked up at the entrance and her heart came to a stop. In the doorway to the room stood one of the best examples of a male body she had ever seen. He wore a simple black t-shirt and jeans, but they hugged him enough to show that he was sleekly muscled and devastatingly handsome. Blond hair fell down the man’s cheek, shielding one eye from her view and stopping right above his shoulders. One bright green eye locked onto her blue ones and Kagome felt her heart start again and speed up unnervingly. She did not like her reaction to this stranger one bit and the annoyance had her breaking eye contact to go back to sketching. The man soon joined those on her page, but his picture stood out to her long after the actual man had walked away.

“Excuse me ladies and gentlemen.” The voice was coming from near the jewel and when Kagome looked towards it she recognized the man as the owner, Naraku. He wore a suit just like the one in his picture, but Kagome could pick out the differences enough to know it was a different suit. How he could afford more than one, she had no idea. Naraku held a microphone in his hand that explained why he could be heard over the chatter of people.

“Thank you all for coming to this special occasion. I am honored to be here today, and even more honored that the museum wanted others to see the little piece of history in my position.” Kagome almost laughed. The man was most likely honored because the museum had paid an unreasonable price to convince him to let the museum have a showing of the jewel. Instead of breaking out in laughter, Kagome politely clapped along with the other people in the room.  A man with a long droopy mustache took the microphone next.

“There will be refreshments in the main room for all of you, and please do not forget to read the exhibit’s sign. It tells of how Mr. Naraku found the-”

There was a loud popping noise and suddenly the room was filled with grey smoke. Kagome dropped her sketch pad and ran towards where she remembered the jewel to be, hoping it was not too late. She heard the sound of shattering glass a few feet in front of her and ran faster.

Kagome was not prepared to run into someone. Her hands shot out in front of her to grab onto the person, to use them to steady her, but one hand missed and the other closed around a cold ball. Kagome tugged on the item as she fell and it was pulled from the person’s hold.

“Oof!” Kagome’s breath left her as she landed on the floor. She blinked her eyes open to see that the smoke was clearing and she could make out the face of the person she had run into. Strange enough, it was the man from before, the one that made her react badly. Kagome glanced from him to her hand and blinked at the shining pink jewel held in her hand. She figured she had miraculous luck in order to get the jewel back. She looked back up at the man and something clicked in her brain.

“Sesshomaru.”

The man narrowed his eyes on her. He leaned forward, as if to bring her off the floor, but Kagome scrambled back from him. There was a sudden heat against her hand but it was gone quick enough for her to not really take notice of it.

“You cannot have it.” She said, chin raised and eyes flaming at the master thief. Sesshomaru did not say a word as he looked her over, eyes sliding over her body like a caress.  His eyes stopped on her hand, the one that held the jewel, and stopped.

“’But I will.” He said in a smoky voice that sent a shiver down her spine. And he was gone.

Kagome did not wait around for him to come back, hurrying to get to her feet and head for one of the areas that had little or no smoke left. Kagome sighed at the first bit of fresh air and glanced down at her hand. Where the Shikon no Tama had once sat, there was nothing but skin.

“Darn it, he got the jewel.”

And it is now time for me to sleep. Hope you liked it and please leave me words.

Thankyou.
