Part One
The silent calmness of the forest abruptly shattered with the sound of Inuyasha’s growl. He—among his friends—had taken prompt notice of the demonic aura rippling through their immediate area. Hand moving instinctively to his precious sword, the half-demon entered a rigid defensive position—himself between his treasured ones and the menacing form of his older half brother. Even with their cooperation at the defeat of Naraku, Inuyasha could not find himself able to spare a drop of trust unto his brother when the demon approached with a whirlwind of energy radiating off him like a turbulent storm.
“Sesshoumaru,” He gritted, his brows knitted into a scowl, teeth showing.
“I am familiar with my name, half-breed.”
There had always been a bitter edge in every word that dripped like the acid he was actually known to spill. Some how—in a twisted way—this could be construed as special treatment, Kagome thought, and possibly even acknowledgement. As long as that bitter acid clung to every sentiment, Sesshoumaru was fortifying that Inuyasha held a presence. The coldness of tearing Inuyasha down for his own birth had almost become so much a part of Sesshoumaru’s presence, that he may as well have worn it like a badge. The words were ruthless, but normal within the demon lord’s fashion.
But the lack of malice was not normal.
“What the hell do you want?”
“Draw your sword, you filth.”
It was not her imagination. She had spent too much time among them. Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru. She recognized lack of depth, insincerity of challenge…Toneless and expressionless as the demon lord could be, there was something not right here.
“Inuyasha…wait.” She tried softly, but she knew already that the battle was going on without her to interfere. Sesshoumaru’s weapon already in his hand and Inuyasha’s growing to its dangerous size.
“I don’t know what your problem is Sesshoumaru, but if you’re itching to die so fucking badly, then come on. I’m tired of this shit.”
“As am I, little brother.”
Nothing. At all. Not a hint of malice. Rage. Anything. Kagome couldn’t put her hands on it. She moved away from Inuyasha as he motioned her to, but she watched. Her eyes analyzed the suddenly appeared demon lord. His face was passive as always. His stature was proud. His aura crackled around him, displaying his might. Everything reeked of the Sesshoumaru she had known from the very beginning. Except his eyes. Watching curiously, she had to wonder if even the bright rays of the sun could cast a reflection into those dark golden eyes. Those eyes had contained the few emotions he had been capable of showing; his anger, his concern for Rin, even his occasional puzzlement or surprise. Now they held nothing but a flat, lifeless color. She then realized she was looking at a hallow shell.
“This fight will determine who walks away alive, Inuyasha.” His cold voice seemed to echo across the small field. Across Inuyasha. Across their friends. And across her heart the moment she realized both of his swords were still carefully sheathed at his hip. His hand pointing a very plain normal human made katana at the brother he’d been assuming wouldn’t notice the sword switch.
“Oh my god.” The words broke past her lips as Inuyasha made a dash and aimed a killing blow against a human toy of a sword.
