Why We Do What We Do

Sesshomaru reached out a hand, feeling for Kagome’s body in his bed; no, their bed. They were officially engaged as of five days ago, and Sesshomaru could not be happier. Well, he could be happier if he could only find his future wife in the bed…

When his searching hand turned up nothing Sesshomaru reluctantly opened his eyes and glanced at the space next to him. It was empty, an odd thing to happen on a Saturday, and when he put his hand down on the sheet he couldn’t feel any leftover heat from her body. Puzzled, he got out of bed and pulled on a pair of jeans to go in search of her.

He stepped out of the room and instantly heard laugher and barking that seemed to be coming from the kitchen. He recognized Kagome’s laugh instantly and a second later he identified the other as Rin. Sesshomaru had no idea why Rin was there, but he figured his mother had another social brunch she ‘just had to go to’. He didn’t mind, he would even admit that he liked having his little sister around, but he was a little sad that he could not drag Kagome back into their bed.

“Do we have enough eggs?”

Sesshomaru entered the kitchen to see that Rin was holding about four cartons of eggs stacked precariously in her arms. He instantly walked over to her and took the eggs from her before she could drop them.

“Good timing Sesshomaru, but you should really go put a shirt on.” Kagome went to him and gave him a kiss on the lips, careful of the eggs, then stepped back over to Rin. Sesshomaru noticed then noticed that she was carrying a large chunk of ham. “And yes, we have plenty.”

“What’s going on?” Sesshomaru asked. Kagome wasn’t acting suspicious, but he knew that she was a great actress.

“Don’t you remember? We are going to go to Rin’s school for a special reading day. I asked you weeks ago if you would help out and you agreed.” Kagome put the ham in a bag before turning back to him. “You really should go put on a shirt; I don’t want the other women to get drool all over my shoes.”

Sesshomaru frowned at her but put the eggs down before returning to their bedroom. As he looked for a shirt that would be good to play in, he tried to think back to the conversation. He was coming up blank, which was strange for him, but he did not think it strange. With all the changes that had happened, it was possible that he had forgotten. One red shirt later he was helping Kagome put everything in the car and to handle the excited puppy. For some reason he didn’t understand, Dolly was allowed to come along with them. Sesshomaru didn’t mind much and soon they were on the way to the school.

Sesshomaru scowled at the spatula in his hand. When he had heard that he was a volunteer, he had not thought he would be cooking. Sesshomaru knew enough about cooking to make a sandwich, and on special occasions he could even make waffles. He was also great at cooking frozen food. Instead of making either of those things, Sesshomaru was somehow in charge of making enough eggs to feed what seemed like an endless line of loud and hyper children. Not only did he have to make the eggs so that they were not too raw or too well done, he had to add little drips of dye to make the eggs into a green color.

“Come on Sesshomaru, you are doing great.” Kagome patted his back before going back to her own station. Kagome’s job was to read Dr. Seuss  books to the little kids one after another and she had to stop several times to get water. He thought it was Karma, but he had his own punishment in mind.

A few hours later Sesshomaru was finished and he hoped that he would never have to break another egg shell again. Kagome left her group of children with some protests from the listeners, but the parents swarmed around them and stopped the complaining. Kagome walked over to Sesshomaru and collapsed against him.

“Remind me why I wanted to do this?” Her voice was muffled by Sesshomaru’s chest but he heard her clearly.

“Same reason you told me I had agreed to do this.” He put an arm around her and started herding her towards the door. “We both know I didn’t hear of this little event until today.”

Kagome groaned, but she smiled at him because he didn’t seem mad at her white lie.

“What tipped you off?”

“I would never consent to cook. Ever.” He scanned the room for Rin and soon found her talking with some other girls her age who were entranced by Dolly. “Rin, it is time to go.” She nodded and ran over with Dolly, both seemingly not tired at all from their fun unlike both adults.

“Thank you for helping.” Rin smiled at the pair and skipped towards the car, Dolly following her happily. Sesshomaru sighed.

“That is why you wanted to do this. And that is why we will probably be talked into doing more things we would rather not.” Sesshomaru shook his head at the thought and almost groaned. “Let’s hope it isn’t too soon.”
