Sesshomaru heard the front door crash open and thought fleetingly of the hole that doorknob could make in the wall. His next thoughts were filled with nothing but Kagome as she stalked into his study. She wore a simple red t-shirt and jeans but she looked as beautiful as she had in her dress. He blocked that thought instantly, not wanting to have it go around in his mind repeatedly. Again.  Now, three days after the fateful day, she stood in front of him with fire in her eyes.

“Kagome.” He said coolly, making sure that his face showed no expression. “How can I help you?” He looked down at his desk, trying to show her that he was not focusing on her at all while in truth he was aware of every breath she took. He had filled the desk top with papers from work, hoping to distract himself from the thought of Kagome. He had no idea what the papers held, but he pretended to read one.

“Don’t take that tone with me!” Kagome slammed her hands down and Sesshomaru’s eyes flashed to her, briefly surprised it did not collapse under the force of her fiery. The feeling passed and he was once again looking at her without showing anything.

“Tone? I was not aware that I had any specific tone.” Yes, he did. Frost coated his words and Kagome did not seem to like it one bit. Sesshomaru thought that was just fine after she had hurt him so badly.

“Don’t try to play innocent Sesshomaru, it doesn’t work on me.” Kagome’s eyes narrowed on him and his heart stared to beat faster in reaction. She was so beautiful in her anger and it was eating away at him slowly like a disease to watch her.

Sesshomaru got up from his chair, intending to leave the room and lead her to the front door so that he could show her out of his life once and for all. Kagome surprised him again by walking around the desk and moving entirely too close to his body for comfort. Before he could control himself, Sesshomaru backed up into his chair and sat down.

“Now listen to me.” Kagome said, sitting on his lap as if to keep him there. Sesshomaru tried to pay no attention to how right she felt there, how perfectly she fit against him. “I’ve been trying to call you for days now and I’ve left a dozen messages that you haven’t returned. It is your own fault I have to practically sit on you for you to listen to a word I say!”

“You are sitting on me. Get off and leave me alone.” Sesshomaru wanted to push her from him, to escape from her blazing eyes, but he didn’t want to hurt her. He still loved her too much to cause her harm.

“No, listen.” She said sharply, fierceness and determination radiating from her. Sesshomaru wondered if he could become blinded just by looking at her.

“Kouga and I…” Sesshomaru jolted out of his thinking and unconsciously scowled at the mention of the other man. “There is no Kouga and me. Kouga wants there to be, but I don’t want to date Kouga. I don’t want to date him because he isn’t you.”

Sesshomaru froze at those words, not sure if he should trust them. He didn’t want to feel his heart break again, he wasn’t sure if he could bare it and if she was lying he knew that he would be scarred by it.

“Do you remember the first day we met?” She asked suddenly. Sesshomaru blinked at her before hesitantly shaking his head side to side. “I was at the park, depressed because work was not going well and I was feeling homesick. I watched the people walking around in pairs and with friends, talking and touch, showing affection in the easiest way possible and I felt so alone.

“Then you came. The first thing I noticed was your hair, so different and unusual in color and length but beautiful because of it defied the norm. The next thing I noticed was how attractive you were. You stalked across the path, liquid gold eyes focused on some distant point and I thought of stopping you, of starting a conversation with you, but your eyes never wavered from that point and you did not notice me sitting nearby. You were there and gone within two minutes but I didn’t stop thinking of you.”

Sesshomaru didn’t know what to think. He had no idea that this had happened, no idea that Kagome had watched him before he had started watching her.

“The next time I saw you was at a coffee shop. I needed extra money for school, so I had become a waitress to get a little extra cash. I was lost in thought as I served people and took their orders, walking among them and watching the people interact with each other. I was not prepared to find you sitting the corner booth, the one that I had to cover. You were sitting there, laptop open in front of you as you typed away. Your eyes were focused again, but this time you did not see anything past the screen. I took your order, heart beating a million miles a minute, but you did no more than thank me when I brought your coffee. You left a generous tip and I am not ashamed to say that I still have it hidden among my precious items.” Kagome did blush at this, but she shook her head and went on. Sesshomaru didn’t know what to think anymore.

“And the third time I saw you our eyes met. I was in the school’s quad, running to get to one of my classes because I was going to be late after staying to talk to one of my professors. It was just my luck to run right into you, dropping all of my books on the floor and losing my thought process by looking into your eyes. By the time I could actually get any intelligible words out, you had picked up all my books and had offered to walk me to class. I didn’t say anything, and you walked me to class, a silent shadow that held half of my books. And the same time the next week you were there again and you walked me to class once more in silence. For two weeks we walked together in silence before I got the courage to actually talk to you.”

Sesshomaru frowned as he tried to think back. He remembered walking with her to class, but not the choice that had led to it. Why had he come back again and again?

“Have you heard the idea that if you meet someone on accident three times in different places, that person will have some part in your life? Well, you have had a large part in my life and I want you to continue to have a part in it. I love you Sesshomaru, for your perfection and for your faults. I love you and I don’t want to give you up, no, I refuse to give you up. I want you to marry me.”

Sesshomaru blinked at her girl, shocked speechless. He wondered if he was dreaming this whole thing up, or maybe he had even gone over the edge of insanity.

But as he held Kagome, as he felt the warmth and love from her, he started to believe.

“Aren’t you supposed to ask?” A small grin slipped out and his arms surrounded her.

“No, because if I ask you might say no.” She said, looking unsure of herself. Sesshomaru hugged her to him and put his chin on top of her head.

“So you are just going to force me to marry you?” He asked, grin turning into a laugh. Kagome put her hands on his chest and pushed him back so that she could see his eyes. When she saw the smile in his eyes her lips slowly turned up in a smile that took his breath away.

“Yep, you have no choice in the matter. If you don’t marry me I’ll just follow you around until you submit.” She gave him a teasing kiss on the lips and Sesshomaru felt his heart mending inside of him.

“You do not have to go to the trouble, I submit to you.” He said and took her lips in a deep kiss.

After a few minutes Sesshomaru broke off the kiss so that they could breathe and he couldn’t control the grin that he knew looked self satisfied.

“Will you let me up for a second?” Kagome sent him a mock glare and he gave her another soul stealing kiss. When they broke apart again he tried to remember his train of thought. “I have to get something, something I have been saving.”

Kagome reluctantly got off of Sesshomaru’s lap and allowed him to stand.

“Wait just a moment.” He said before leaving the room

He quickly went to his bedroom and grabbed the pair of jeans that was on his dresser. He put his hand in the pocket and felt for what he wanted. Feeling the soft box, he pulled it out. The paper dropped out along with it and he bent down to get it. He hesitated over the note, wondering what it would say, and quickly opened it. The only words on the paper were ‘I love you’. He felt like a fool for doubting her, and he had the sudden urge to hunt down Kouga and beat him up. Figuring that could wait until the next day, he smoothed out the paper and left it on his dresser. He turned back to the door to see that Kagome was standing in the doorway, watching him curiously.

“I thought I told you to wait.” He said with a smile on his face. Kagome walked towards him and he suddenly felt like her prey, a very strange switch in roles.

“I was impatient. So, what did you get?” She pressed her body to his and gave him a seductive smile. He had to swallow or risk choking on his own drool. He had no idea when his Kagome had turned into a tiger.

“Uh… This.” He handed her the little box after he figured out how to function again. Kagome stared at the box before taking it and flipping the lid up. The jewel sparkled at her and Sesshomaru could have sworn he could see the sparkle flash in her own eyes.

“Sesshomaru.” She said, a tear falling from her eye. Sesshomaru panicked at the little drop of water.

“If you don’t like it we can get you another one.” He hurried to assure her. “You can have anything you want.”

“No.” She shook her head and her watery eyes looked into is golden ones. “No, this ring is beautiful.  It is perfect.” She took the ring out of the container and slipped it onto her finger. It fit exactly. “Perfect.” She repeated before throwing herself into his arms.

Sesshomaru held her close and felt the tears soaking his shirt. He understood now that they were happy tears so they didn’t terrify him quite so much.

“Wait,” Kagome leaned way from him and quickly swiped the tears away with the back of her hand before looking at him questioningly. “This ring is too elaborate for you to have just walked into a jeweler’s and found it. If you special ordered it, you must have done that… Oh. Oh no, you were going to ask me that day.” Her arms tightened on him. “I’m so sorry Sesshomaru, no wonder you wouldn’t take my calls; I wouldn’t have taken my calls.”

Sesshomaru pulled her back into a hug. The thought of that day no longer hurt him; it just made him aware that while he loved Kagome than, he had not trusted her. So really, the problem had helped him learn to trust her. That fact wouldn’t help the other man, but it made Sesshomaru feel better.

“I love you Kagome, and I will happily marry you. I want to spend my life with you, and then I want to spend eternity together.”

There was a bark from the doorway and Sesshomaru looked to see that Dolly was watching them.

“And thought I tried to stop it, I love your puppy too.”
