The Puppy by Riku Ryuu

Anniversary

This is for Pride.

I don't think you are going to enjoy it much, but the law of romance says there must be problems.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sesshomaru stared at the sight before him, not believing his eyes. It couldn’t be true, it just couldn’t. Because if it was then he was sure his heart would stop working.
***
He was running late, just by a few minutes, but Sesshomaru knew that Kagome would tease him unmercifully over the few minutes of lost time. While it was true that she was usually not on time, Sesshomaru was always on time. And knowing that he couldn’t just blurt out why he was late would make it worse.
The small box in his pocket seemed to weigh five hundred pounds, weighing down his body and his mind. He knew that it was pure insanity to go through with this, but his feelings would allow no other option.
Tonight, he was going to ask Kagome to marry him.
The reason he was late was because he had to stop to pick up the ring, a silver band that he had specially made just for Kagome. The band was made to look like a vine that went around her finger, and at the center was a large sapphire jewel that looked to have fire within it. He knew that she would never want a diamond, never want anything that normal between them. And somehow, he didn’t want the traditional with her either. He wanted to embrace her fun and just be happy with her.
Sesshomaru parked his car in front of the restaurant Kagome had decided they should go to, a hole in the wall little Italian place. He smiled at the small building, thinking that if Kagome had found it the place must serve fabulous food.
Sesshomaru pushed open the door to the restaurant and his eyes scanned for Kagome in excitement. When they finally found her everything stopped inside of him. The world stopped for a second and he could have sworn he heard something inside of his body shatter.
Before him stood Kagome, wrapped in the arms of another man.
Sesshomaru may have frozen but his mind continued to pick out details. It recognized the man as Kouga, a classmate of Kagome’s. He had dashing good looks and could probably be described as ‘tall, dark, and handsome’. His hands were at Kagome’s back, holding her to his body as his lips devoured hers.
Kagome, on the other hand, had her hands at her side. She wore a striking dress of blue that glittered every time she moved. Spiked heels made her taller, but she was still small to fit into the man’s arms. Her hair was loose, black curls against her pale skin. She was beautiful, simply beautiful.
The pair separated and Kagome pushed away from Koga when she saw Sesshomaru at the door.
“It isn’t- I can explain!” She said, swatting Koga’s hands away when they reached for her.
“You don’t need to. I understand.” Sesshomaru felt cold settled upon his heart. “I knew it couldn’t last.”
“What? No!” Kagome began moving to him but Sesshomaru only stepped out of the restaurant and headed for his car. Pride had him ignoring Kagome’s yells and had him getting into his car without stop. Pride had him driving away from the only woman he had ever loved.  Pride took him past the front door of his house, past the puppy that was sleeping in the sunlight from a window, and all the way to his room where he locked the door. A broken heart had him collapsed on the floor, head on his knees as he mourned his lost love.
Don't hate me! And please keep any words pg, though I am sure that some will be upset with this twist. Just remember, you have to lose something before you really understand how much you really need it.
Thank you.
