17 year old Higurashi Kagome had been called a lot of things. Sweet tempered young woman. Nice lady. Pretty child. Miko. Wench – by her hanyō best friend. Child prodigy – by her teachers; teacher’s pet and goody-two-shoes, by her classmates. On a particularly vicious day (oh joy), she can sometimes hear her classmates call her freak.
It should have bothered her, but never let it be known that the young lady was anything but strong – something that her own mother had always called her.
Higurashi Kagome was also frequently called stubborn.
“Mama, surely there’s no need –“ Kagome quailed at the look in her mother’s eyes, but forged on defiantly. “I mean, isn’t Kaede-sensei doing just fine as my mentor?”
The older woman sighed. “Dear, Kaede-sama told me herself that there’s nothing more she can teach you in your miko studies. Inu no Taisho-sama was gracious enough to offer to have his family teach you ancient yōkai culture and customs; surely you know what a boon that is?”
“I know that, Mama, but – “ Kagome huffed and turned to face the Goshinboku grumpily. “It’ll be Inuyasha’s older brother Touga-sama will assign to be my teacher, and you know how much he hates my guts! He always sneers and looks down at me! It’ll never work!”
“Then maybe you can use this chance to show Sesshōmaru-sama what you’re made of?” Kagome’s mother suggested with a twinkle in her eye. “It’s been years since you last saw each other.”
Kagome’s eyes lit up. “Of course! That’s a brilliant idea, mama! He’ll never know what hit him!”
“Then I shall call my son right away, Kagome-chan.” Touga’s amused voice interrupted the two ladies, Kagome whirling around to stare at him in shock. “Thank you for accepting our offer, child.”
Silence. Then: “Mama! You tricked me!”

Author's note: Un-beta'ed, sadly. If you see any grammar/spelling/etcetera ad infinitum errors, feel free. :D Reviews are fuel. (and yes, I'm having too much fun with this to keep this to myself.) The title was taken from Apprendre, which is a french verb meaning 'to learn'. Apprendre was derived from the latin word 'Apprehendere', thus the title.
Edits: Fixed Touga-sama and Sesshōmaru-sama's names. Added disclaimer.
