Of Peony Flowers and Anxiety

The 14 Symbol Challenge: Peony

Once upon a time, a girl leapt through time.

Once upon a time, that girl saved the world from an evil hanyou.

Once upon a time, she sat in a Taiyoukai’s garden.

Once upon a time, she was happy.

Once upon a time, she saw a peony flower die.

Once upon a time… a girl was forced back through time.

The noises of the city were too much. They hurt her head, screamed and taunted her, for she had once knew of a time where you could smell the flowers, hear the trees whisper, and feel the wind’s force. Slowly, she shut her eyes and turned away from the window. It would do no good to reminisce now.

A long time ago, she remembered being happier than any other day in her life. That glow of happiness had been through love. Five months have passed and she wondered if she would ever get the chance to bloom again.

Perhaps she would.

Perhaps she wouldn’t.

Fate was so utterly confusing and it didn’t get easier to understand even after toying with it for years. She had firsthand experience of what fate could do, more than half of it being bad.

Her mouth felt dry and she couldn’t help but shiver.

It was the middle of winter, leaving her window open was stupid.

But still…

He had promised her to see her once again in the spring time, when the peony flowers would blossom again. She couldn’t help but wonder if he still had them in his garden. When she saw him again, she would make sure to ask.

Was he even still alive—? No. It would do no good to think like that. Even if he had lost the war, he would live. She squeezed her eyes shut. By the Kami, even if he was the last on the battle field, he would live.

I’m sorry for all the Kagome-centric drabbles. Currently, I’m going through my obsession stage of a waiting-Kagome.
