Sesshomaru just blinked when he saw her.
There was no way it could be her. He thought to himself as he watched her through the window. She died when we defeated Naraku. Surely the whelp would have said something before he passed if she was still alive.
He continued watching her, hours turning into days, but never quite getting up the courage to approach her, even after he actually determined that she was the miko who traveled with his, at the time, hated half-brother. Eventually days turning into years as he watched her from the sidelines as she grew older and older.
As time went on he watched her marry and have a child of her own. He stayed at the sidelines, waiting for her to do something, or even just notice him. He noticed that she never said anything about the well, or the past, to him it almost seemed as if she had forgotten.
When her end came though, he was surprised. He expected to see her husband and child be her side, instead, he found no one, not even a nurse there for her in her finale hours.
“Sesshomaru.” she said quietly. She's known he was there, had for sometime in fact., although it wasn't until now that she'd been certain. To her, he looked just as he always had, despite the fact that his hair was more gray than silver and he had a few wrinkles on his face.
“Miko.” he said just as quietly. To him, she looked old, her long black hair now a silvery gray, more wrinkles than, in his opinion, one of her powers should ever have.
She laughed, although some what hoarsely. “After all this time, you still can't call me by my name. Though to be honest, I can't say I'm surprised.”
“Hn. This Sesshomaru knows your name, Lady Kagome. My question though, is how did you know I was here?”
“I wasn't certain at first, it wasn't until I watched you try to peak into the room that I knew for certain. I must say I was surprised though, I never expected it to be you who would stay with me in the end. My husband is who knows where, probably off fishing. As for my son, who knows. The hospital stopped trying to call him a week ago since he didn't answer the last three dozen times they called. The doctors gave me two more weeks to live, but I think you and I both know this is the end.”
Sesshomaru just stared at her, slowly comprehending what she had just said. He knew her husband wasn't going to come, he'd been avoiding the place since she'd been admitted. As for her son, he could only guess where he was at.
“Will you tell me of the others while I wait for my time?”
“If that is what you wish, then I can tell you want I remember.”
She smiled slightly, and nodded. She listened carefully as he told her on Sango and Miroku, of the many children they had. He spoke of Shippo and Rin and how in the end, they mated and of how they ran a rather formidable landscaping company in the States. He spoke of Inuyasha and how he did leave with Kikyo, but only after making Sesshomaru promise that he'd look for Kagome in the future. She surprised him when she asked after Jaken and Ah-Un. He told her how Jaken was still around, training humans haw to butlers to the very wealthy and Ah-Un stayed in the mountains with Totosai.
She smiled at that. “And what is it that you do these days? Surely you have something to which you do to occupy your time.” she asked, curiously.
“I watch over helpless Mikos and wait for them to talk of the past.” he said, grinning cheekily when she huffed and attempt to throw a loose pillow at him.
“I am not helpless. I just had to move on with my life. After the well sealed I waited for three years for someone from the feudal era to come forward, when no one did I left the shrine, needing to heal the pain and the hurt. I scoured all of Japan looking for some hint that what had happened had been real, and not just my imagination. I tried talking about it once, and was put in a mental ward for a month until the deemed that I made it up because I was under to much stress.”
He was quite for a moment. “I am sorry about that. If I had found you sooner I'd've step in and done something.”
By now her breathing had slowed, though she was still awake. She gave him on last look before looking into his eyes. He merely nodded before taking her hand, feeling the life fade from her.
It was only thanks to his demonic hearing he heard her final words. “Thank you for being here, with me in the end. I can go happily, knowing it wasn't a dream.”
Author's note:
This just kinda popped into my head. This is my first attempt at writing for the Sesshomaru/Kagome pairing. Please tell me what you think.
