The hot summer sun beat down on the old, weather worn porch, each plank creaking and threatening to buckle beneath the slight increase in weight as five pairs of tiny feet scurried across. Each moved in turn, making their way to the far end of the porch before sitting on the edge, letting their chubby legs hang off and swing in increasing beats. First was the eldest; a boy of six such summers, long silvery hair and deep, golden eyes. His legs would have been completely still, if not for occasional twitch that betrayed his impatience.
Beside him was next in line, in more ways then one; a girl of just barely six years, dark ebony hair, shining umber eyes filled with all of the curiosities a child could have. Her legs swung to the beat of a soft tune she hummed under her breath, a song her mother often sang to them before bedtime. It was a soft, steady melody that could lull even the most rambunctious child to sleep in a matter of minutes. Sometimes, after she would get into her stash of candy she hid from her mother and the sugar kept her wide awake, it was the only thing that could lead her to slumber.
Sitting beside her was the other's younger brother, a boy of four years. Same silvery hair, only duller, same golden eyes, only brighter. Next to him could have been his twin, though they looked nothing alike, merely acted in kind. Four years old, dark hair and blue eyes. Both with fiery tempers, both quick to fight. Both swung their legs increasingly louder than the other, each trying to outdo the noise their opponent had managed to make. Their battle for noisiest was an ongoing war that had lasted so long, no one could even remember how it had gotten started.
And lastly, was the youngest. A boy of only two years, younger brother to the only girl of the bunch. Unruly hair and shinning eyes like his sister. Though too young to really understand what was going on, he knew that the older kids were sitting there waiting for something and it was all that mattered to him. He was hanging with the big boys and the fast pace beat of his legs, as his eyes followed the verbal fight between the middle two, clearly showed his excitement. It was a rare occasion where he wasn't called a baby and chased away by one of the older boys.
And as they waited, as they had been told to do, each sat in a different attitude. Sesshoumaru, the eldest, waited in complete silence, paying no attention to anything around him, as if he was completely alone. Even when in a crowded classroom, he had the ability to appear to be the only one there as he managed to live most of his life within his mind. Not sure how to deal with him, his mother hoped he would one day out grown this phrase while his father knew his poker face would one day help him in business.
Kagome, the girl, sat with a cheerful smile as she kept watch over him, twirling a lock of her hair between her fingers. Though her plan never seemed to work, she never gave up hope of catching the quiet boy's attention and continued to do everything her young mind could suggest to her. Some days, such as this one, it was twirling her hair, others it was batting her eyes. Sometimes she winked at him when he was looking up or left a present in his desk before he came to class. But, as always, no matter which one she tried, they never seemed to have any effect.
Inuyasha and Kouga, the almost twins, sat glaring at each other, both finding ways of annoying the other without actually touching them. There was the 'I'm not touching you' game where they would waves their hands just shy of touching the other or the 'what?' game where they would pretend to have not heard the other and constantly ask 'what?', each time the other spoke. Or even worst yet was the 'copycat' game where one would repeat what ever the other said. All of which naturally ended in the epic battle of 'I know you are, but what am I?'.
And Souta, the youngest, waited fidgeting in his seat, barely containing his bouncing as his patience grew thinner. Not that he had much in the first place, he was only two after all. But as the two next to him became louder and his sister had yet to even realize he was sitting there, he found himself even more anxious for the reason they were out on the porch to come to light. Even though he himself had decided to follow them, without knowing the reason why they were told to go outside, it did not stop him from becoming antsy when things took too long.
Then the moment they had been waiting for arrived and the screen door creaked open, slamming shut a moment later when no one prevented it. Startled by the noise, each turned their heads toward the sound and found a young woman carrying a large tray full of watermelon slices, the soft drumming of her pumps on the old wood growing louder the closer she got. Realizing what she was carrying, five cheers rang out in sync, Cheshire grins adorning their faces as they waited for her to reach them.
Smiling softly to herself, Kagome and Souta's mother handed each a large chunk of the red, watery fruit before making her way back inside to prepare a cool bath, knowing the sticky mess that would soon ensue. This time the thumping of her shoes went unnoticed as they were already losing themselves in the sweet smell wafting up from the watermelon. Even before the screen door had slammed close once again, the children were already engorging themselves on their new found treats.
And, much like everything else they did, they each had their own way of eating the summer time treat. Sesshoumaru daintily took one small bite after another, nibbling away at it in rows as he made his way toward the green rind, careful not to spill a single drop of it's staining juices onto his clothes. The hard black seeds went unnoticed by him, unworried of what would happen if he managed to eat a few of them as he already knew they could not grow within his belly and therefore posed no threat.
Kagome gently dug out chunks with her fingers before popping them into her mouth, sucking away at the juices before munching on the now white fruit. After each bite, she would lick the juices from her fingers only to repeat the process all over again. When she would come across one of the black seeds, she would simply pluck it from her mouth and toss it into the grass below, hoping that a watermelon would eventually begin to grow from her efforts.
Inuyasha and Kouga, as always, found a way to battle while they ate. Each would take large bites out of the fruit, stockpiling the seeds within their mouths, before deciding it was time. A shared look passed between them, and then almost as if a signal gun was shot, the battle begun and both sides began to spit the black seeds at each other in rapid succession. Soon enough they would be all out of ammo only to start collecting more as they dug into their watermelon once again.
Souta, seeing the strange black seeds protruding from the sweet, delicious fruit in his hands and remembering the story Inuyasha had told him about the seeds sprouting in someone's belly, began to flick them off so he could reach his prize below. But as he took his first bite, he noticed he had missed one of the seeds as he could feel it on his tongue. About to freak out, scared he would swallow it, he turned to Inuyasha for help only to see him starting round two with Kouga.
Figuring he could follow suit and rid himself of the dreadful seed, Souta attempted to spit it out only to have it slide passed his lips to land on his chin as he, instead of spitting, simply pushed it out with his tongue. Unnoticed by them, the screen door squeaked open once again as Mrs. Higurashi came out to check on their progress and seeing that Inuyasha and Kouga had run out of actual fruit and were now hitting each other with the rinds, she decided she would give them a bath first. Calling out to them, she watched as they stood and began racing each other toward her, hundreds of tiny, black seeds falling from their clothes as they did.
As they raced inside, she quickly turned back to check on the others and found Souta pushing another seed out of his mouth with his tongue. It soon joined the other three on his chin as he continued eating, unaware that it was not completely gone. Wondering what her changes of getting Kagome to sweep off the porch when they were done were, Mrs. Higurashi made her way back inside and rushed toward the bathroom, already able to hear the sounds of splashing coming from within.
Back outside, Kagome began humming once again as she continue munching away, tossing her seeds out into the yard. Just passed the porch, the hot summer sun beat down causing visible waves of heat to flow across the grass as crickets chirped in the background. Too enthralled in what they were doing, none of the remaining children noticed the soft, white butterfly that fluttered passed them before disappearing over the fence into the neighbors yard.
