Green-eyed Monster

A/N:  2 stories in one day.  That's a record for me lately, isn't it?  I hope that you enjoy this little number.  When I think of jealousy, I can't help but think of this character.  Please read and review.

She envied her.  She envied the girl whom looked so much like her, yet who was worlds apart from her.  It was clear that her reincarnation had everything that she did not.  The girl was care-free and could laugh while when she was alive, she never allowed herself to enjoy the light-heartedness that life would bring.  Instead, she spent most of her life wondering if her life would have been better had she been simply born a normal woman.

In this life, she knew that a woman didn’t have as much power as a man, but she could not help wonder if her life would have been different had she been without her miko abilities.  So, as she watched her younger reincarnation playing in the field with the youkai lord’s charge, she could feel the familiar stirrings of envy.  She would never be allowed to play such games.  She would never be allowed to smile with such abandon.  She would never know the passionate love of one who wanted nothing more than to protect her.

It is true that Inu Yasha loved her, but not because of anything she did.  If it had not been for that cursed jewel, he never would have spared her a second glance.  He was brash, loud, and uncouth, but she knew that he cared for her.

When she heard how the inu hanyou spoke to her reincarnation, she was satisfied.  For once, she was above that girl and it made her feel a bit comforted to see the younger girl wilt underneath the hanyou’s criticism.  But, she could also see that her reincarnation was a spirit that could not and would not break.  In fact, she seemed to shine a bit brighter in the face of adversity and, once again, she felt envious of such determination.

And, she could not help but feel envious of the devotion that the youkai lord seemed to deem necessary to heap upon the younger girl.  It was clear in his stance that while he was protecting his charge, it was the younger miko who commanded his attentions.  It was clear that despite the rumors of him hating humans, he did not feel any resentment towards the young females in his care.

He allowed the younger miko to pick at him, engage him in conversation, and would allow her to touch his person without a threat hanging over her head.  It had taken her several months to get Inu Yasha to allow her to touch him without him jumping away or flinching.

Now, as she watched as the youkai lord drew her reincarnation into his embrace, she could not help the envious feeling that surfaced as he kissed her with tenderness and longing that she had only dreamed that Inu Yasha would bestow upon her.

She supposed that this must be some form of punishment from the gods for her desire to be a normal, human woman.  She believed that the younger miko was sent her to show her all that she could have been and had if only she had not doubted her lot in life.  Perhaps she was already in hell and this was hell’s way of punishing her for her sins.

Either way, she was envious of the girl who looked so much like her, but who had surpassed and defeated her in every single way that mattered.  As she watched the youkai lord break the kiss, she watched with narrowed eyes as he drew the younger miko into his strong embrace and knew that he would kill anyone who threatened her.

Inu Yasha would have waited to see if she would be able to handle the situation herself before stepping in, even if she was frightened.  This lord would not do such a thing and would kill the offender before they could take a step towards his chosen female.

As she turned away from the endearing scene, she could feel the harsh arms of envy wrapping around her and she struggled to remember who she was and the duty that she was needed to complete.  The time for regrets could come later.  She didn’t have much time and to spend what little time she did have on regrets would not win the war against Naraku.

Her reincarnation, Kagome, had all of the time in the world, it seemed.  She lived her life to the fullest, never looking back and wondering about what could have been.  Instead, she took each day she was blessed with, shared it with others, and made sure to let her loved ones know just how much she did care.  It was a luxury that her incarnation could never afford.

It was with that thought that she squared her shoulders and began to walk away from the clearing; however, the words that she had always longed to hear from the inu hanyou were spoken from the youkai lord to the younger miko and it confirmed her suspicions that the youkai lord had, indeed, followed in his father’s footsteps.

“You are precious to me, miko”

As a stray tear made its way down her face, she couldn’t help but think that this was just one more thing that she could be envious of.
