Mermaid by Dandie

First Kiss

It was the next night of the full moon, and as before, the waves thrashed against the shore. But the difference in this night was the fact that the creatures of the deep, in fear of being discovered, changed the location in which they celebrated. They went further down the beach, away from any spying eyes.

All except Kagome. On this night she decided to be alone, in the secluded spot they had danced at before. The moon shone upon the rock that she lay on, gazing up at the stars and contemplating her troubles. Just a week ago, a fisher mans’ net had almost caught her, if she hadn’t untangled herself, she would have endangered not only herself, but those who were yet undiscovered like her.

It had also brought into perspective the fact that she was the last of her kind… something that had been racing through her mind at a frantic pace these past few months. If she had been caught, it would have been the death of a species.

A woeful sigh slipped through her lips, she had to be careful.

“What troubles you mermaid?” A voice from the shadows asked, slipping through the air to tickle her ears.

Slowly, Kagome sat up and glanced over her shoulder at Sesshoumaru. She wrapped her arms around her moon begotten legs and stared out at the sea.

“Nothing of consequence. What brings you out to the beach on such a night Sesshoumaru?”

A low rumble escaped his throat as he perched on the rock next to her. He could hear the sea calling to her to come back, that danger did approach, and knew instinctively that the danger was him. But he could not harm his little Mermaid. There was something about her that made his protective instincts roar to life, when ever before they had been quiet and subdued.

What a weird pair they did make. A mermaid and a wolf.  Kagome looked at him, expecting a reply.

“Good question… I guess something called to me.” He looked at her meaningfully, but saw that she had looked away already to contemplate the ever moving sea. She seemed entranced, as if something about the sea saddened her.

“Hmm,” was all she replied, looking back over at him, noticing that his gaze was on her as well. An over whelming urge to be held shuddered through her… to feel the warmth of someone’s skin on hers. She felt as if she was always cold… always untouchable. The knowing that she would never be loved shattered her heart.

Without thinking, she leaned forward and touched her lips to his, eyes widening at the electrical shock that tickled her lips.

Sesshoumaru’s golden eyes widened, his heart started to race. And for reasons he knew not of, he did not pull away. Instead, he tugged her into his arms and kissed her back with everything he had.

He slipped his fingers into her silken black hair, groaning at the softness of it. He took the chill out of her skin, taking it into himself and giving back the warmth of a wolfs body.

Suddenly Kagome pulled back, fluttering fingers touching reddened lips as she stared at Sesshoumaru.

“Kagome…” Sesshoumaru whispered, his eyes blazing. “Can I see you again? Will you come back here? To see me?”

Kagome stood on wobbly legs and backed away from him. How could she come to see a wolf? One that she would have no future with? An ocean dweller and a land dweller together? It was impossible!

Kagome began to shake her head, but saw the light slowly start to die in his eyes. Her heart ached.

“I will be here,” she murmured before she dived back into the ocean. But she knew that she had left her heart back on land with her wolf. With Sesshoumaru.

Sesshoumaru watched as Kagome dived back into the frigid water, his heart still racing from their kiss. No one had ever affected him like she did. But how could a mermaid and a wolf be together? Why had he asked her to come back? He should have pulled away and ran, ran as far as his paws could take him!

But his heart rejected the idea. There was something about her… something that called to him. But how could they be soul mates? Could the fates be so cruel?

He laughed harshly to himself. Of course they could.
