Phases of Innocent Youth
“I hate you!” the little girl of six shouted from the top of the stairs. She then proceeded to run to her room. “I’m never speaking to you again!” she bit out before slamming her bedroom door.
Looking around, Kagome saw the various boxes cluttering the area. No one had the chance to unpack anything and she already wished she was back home with her father. But her father was gone and for some reason her heart hurt when she thought about not seeing him again.
The sun beamed through the flimsy curtains, and Kagome curled up on the window seat. A light breeze blew through the window opened a crack. Her vivid blue eyes wandered over the large back yard and the tall fence marking the end of her yard. There was a yard just past the fence, she knew that, but the wooden planks were so tall she could not see too much of the land. She could make out the top floors of the house sitting upon the land and the black roof.
“Hey you!” someone shouted.
Kagome looked down. There in her yard stood a young boy. He had white hair and atop his head were two furry ears. His eyes were deep amber and he wore a red shirt and pants. At first she thought she would ignore the boy yelling at her. But she was curious as to why he was in her yard.
“What are you doing here?!” she demanded.
“This is my daddy’s land.”
“No, my mommy bought it!”
“No, it belongs to my daddy.”
“No, it doesn’t.”
“Yes, it does.”
“No, it doesn’t.”
“Yes, it does.”
“Yes, it does.”
“No, it doesn’t.”
“See there you admitted it,” Kagome remarked slyly, “It doesn’t belong to your daddy. It belongs to my mommy.”
“Kagome what are you shouting about?” her mother asked coming into the room with a concern look on her face.
“That boy thinks this land belongs to his daddy,” Kagome explained reasonably forgetting that she was mad at her mother only minutes earlier.
“Well, it does, we are buying it from him.”
Kagome narrowed her eyes; not liking the fact that she was being told she was wrong. She pointed her nose into the air and crossed her arms. “Then let’s go home.”
“Honey, this is our home now. Why don’t you go out and play? I’m sure you can make friends with Touga’s son.”
“But he looks bossy.”
“Then teach him to be a better person.”
Kagome seemed to think about it and with a nod, jumped from her window seat and headed out of her room. She rushed down the stairs and out the door. In a matter of seconds she was standing off with the white hair boy.
“My name is Kagome,” the girl began.
“Inuyasha,” the little boy stated, “We’re going ta my house, I have a trampoline.”
Kagome had never been on a trampoline before and decided that she really wanted to try out whatever it was. So she followed Inuyasha. He walked to the tall wooden fence and then push a particular plank, which happened to be loose so the children could slip through the planks.
The white hair boy led Kagome to the trampoline. They spend best part of an hour jumping, flipping, bouncing, and finally sitting. Then Kagome sense something and out of the corner of her eyes she saw something more. Looking over her shoulder she noticed another young boy, his hair flowed like a silver river down his back. His eyes were a pale gold and they were sharp to his surroundings. On each of his high cheek bones there were two magenta stripes. On his forehead there was a midnight blue crescent.
“Who’s that?” Kagome asked.
“Stupid brother,” Inuyasha grumbled. “Ignore him. Come on, we’re playing something else.”
Kagome looked over her shoulder at the other brother. There was something about him that made her a little vigilant of the boy. But at the same time she wanted to get to know the older boy.
“Come on ‘Gome,” Inuyasha shouted from near the backdoor to the house.
“Coming,” the young girl answered.
Inuyasha slid open the sliding door and stepped into the house. Kagome was just about to follow when the door slammed in front of her. Kagome looked up confused, and noticed the pale, magenta stripped hand on the door handle. Her vivid blue eyes fused with the dangerous golden irises of the older brother.
“Hello,” Kagome said.
“Who do you think you are? Only family is allowed in the house,” Sesshomaru stated.
“But… Inuyasha said to follow him.”
“Well this isn’t the half breed’s house. Nor will it ever be. Leave ningen.”
“Sesshomaru, be nice to our guest,” a voice interrupted.
The heads of both children turned to face the newcomer. Kagome saw a man standing there, resembling a bigger Sesshomaru. His silver hair was pulled into a high tail at the back of his head. Though there was no crescent on his forehead, there was a single blue stripe on each cheek.
“She doesn’t belong here father,” the young boy said.
“Of course she belongs here and she can come here as much as she wants. You should treat her kindly Sesshomaru, she is your future bride,” Sesshomaru’s father told him.
“I am never mating,” Sesshomaru stated coldly, turning on his heel and entering the house.
Inuyasha, who had banged on the door the entire time when he saw that Sesshomaru was holding it closed, was suddenly quiet as the older brother walked by. The look on his face was contoured in jealousy. Before Kagome knew it she was tugged into Inuyasha’s arms.
“Kagome will be my mate,” Inuyasha boldly stated. “Sesshomaru can’t have her.”
Touga gave a deep laugh. He shook his head in amusement but neither denied Inuyasha statement nor approved it.
Kagome frowned as she looked at the form walking away quickly. She pulled away from Inuyasha, gave a polite bow to her elder and ran into the house after Sesshomaru.
“Did I do something wrong?” Kagome asked the retreating form. She continued to follow the older brother as he walked up the stairs. “I’m sorry if I o-off-ended you.”
They continued to walk to the end of the hall, where Sesshomaru sharply turned to face the human girl with a crimson stare. He pushed her out of the way, forcing her to fall backwards, and proceeded to enter his room. Glaring at the door, the little girl was suddenly angry. She brushed off her backside as she got up and then tried the door knob. It was unlock. Without a warning, Kagome entered the room.
Sesshomaru had yet to make it to his desk, where a variety of scrolls laid unrolled.
“Get out,” he ordered, his aura flaring with his dangerous tone.
“Not until you tell me you are sorry,” Kagome growled out.
Suddenly her own aura rose up and pressed against the young inu’s. They stood in a defensive stance for a few seconds. Just Sesshomaru was about to make his first move Inuyasha came into the room. He place himself between Kagome and his half brother, growling loudly.
“Stay away from Kagome,” he demanded.
Sesshomaru smirked, “Why should I obey any order you give.”
“Cuz Kagome is mine. I’m alpha,” Inuyasha reasoned.
“I don’t think so. I have decided that I will mate the young miko after all.”
“No,” Inuyasha yelled. “Why now? You didn’t want her before. She is mine.”
“It is precisely that reason why I will keep her,” Sesshomaru stated calmly.
The older inu walked up to the younger, his hands moved too fast for Kagome to catch, but in no time Inuyasha was a pile on the ground. Sesshomaru kicked him out the door before closing and locking the only entrance to the room.
“Come. I have much work to do. It is time for you to learn your place. Sit there,” he pointed to a few cushions beside the fire.
Kagome didn’t move.
“Now.”
She stood in one spot.
“Listen to what I say.”
“Not till you say you are sorry for pushing me.”
“I apologize for nothing.”
“Then I am not listening to you.”
Sesshomaru growled at the young miko. Kagome stuck out her tongue and crossed her arms over her chest. The inu narrowed his eyes before reaching over and picking the young girl up. He dropped her on the cushions and then continued to the nearby desk.
Kagome began to hum a short time later.
“Stop that infuriating racket this instance.”
“Not till you say sorry,” Kagome repeated.
“That’s it. Annoying the half breed is not worth this hassle,” Sesshomaru stated.
The young inu picked the miko up and carried her all the way downstairs. His father was with his stepmother listening to the hanyou complaining about the older inu’s behaviour. It was here that Sesshomaru dropped the miko unladylike on her butt.
“You can have her back, though I never thought it possible, she is more annoying than you. I take back my claim.”
Inuyasha happily pounced after Kagome. But the young girl was fascinated with the boy who seemed very much alone. That and she was determined to make him say he was sorry so she dodged around Inuyasha’s arms and ran after the older inu.
“Wait Sesshomaru you better tell me you’re sorry for pushing me and dropping me and being rude to me and being bossy. I won’t forgive you till you do.”
Touga looked at his mate and then at his oldest son and his bride to be. He couldn’t contain the laugher.
“Dear, are you really going to force this marriage on him?” his mate asked.
“They will learn to love each other. I think she will be good for him.”
“But you could always just give the house to Mia, I mean what’s one house. She’s the widow of your best friend.”
“I don’t plan to force them in the end, if they don’t want to. Once Kagome turns 21 I will let her know she can choose to marry who she wants. I just hope that in thinking that she must marry Sesshomaru for the next fifteen years she will fall in love with my cold hearted son.”
“And what of Inuyasha, he seems to take a liking to Kagome.”
“You said that with Kikyou.”
“Yes, but Kikyou was older, it’s not the same.”
“Well what will be will be. Let things work out on their own. Now let us go visit Mia while the children get to know each other.”
