Starry Night

“Wow, the stars are so pretty tonight,” Kagome whispered in awe.

In the future the lights of the city and pollution meant the sky wasn’t the clearest to view the stars. She always loved star gazing each night in the feudal era. But tonight the stars seemed to sparkle more than usual.

“Shut your trap, there are people trying to sleep,” Inuyasha shouted from a tree top.

“Don’t mind him Kagome,” her best friend told her, “He’s still grouchy about everything that has happened so far.

The little miko smiled as she continued to stare upwards to the sky. It dawned upon her to suddenly take a walk. She wasn’t sure why, but she didn’t want to lay there all night, trying to restlessly get some sleep.

“Kagome?” Sango called out as she caught her friend undoing her sleeping bag.

“I have to go find a bush,” Kagome replied, already heading towards the lake she had bathed in earlier. Though she hated lying to her friends, it was sometimes the only chance she would get some time alone.

Running through the trees, she enjoyed the feeling of the grand foliage parting on their own. But before she knew it she had made it to the lake. In the centre of body of water, there was a small mass of land covered in flowers. Upon the water’s smoothed surface the mirrored sky twinkled with tiny diamonds.

She had the urge to swim to the small island. Kagome undressed, wanting to keep her clothing dry, and jumped into the water. She made it in no time, and as she climbed onto the shore her feet slipped and she fell. Picking herself back up, Kagome noted the pain that shot up from her ankle. She collapsed once again, this time moving only to flip onto her back to face the twinkling stars.

“Just great,” she mumbled.

Unsure what she was going to do with a twisted or possibly sprained ankle, Kagome laid still for some time. She had the sudden urge to look to the west of the island. A shadow began to take shape before taking a form as the figure stepped out from within the trees and into the light of the night.

Kagome’s mouth gapped opened for a second before she sat up and crossed her arms across her chest and shrieked loudly. “Hentai! Who do you think you are? Go away, shoo.”

Curled in a ball to retain some of her dignity, if that was possible, she continued to shout at the inu. He remained silent and still for the most part. Except he eventually took a step forward and then another. All too soon he was next to the miko, squirming in her seat in the sand.

“What are you doing?” she demanded as he bent down to her level. “Don’t get any closer.”

“You need assistance do you not miko?”

“What… no, of course not. Besides why would you care?”

Rather than answer, the inu reached around her, and only then did she note that he wasn’t wearing his armour, or his haori. The silver locks were wet, yet the rest of his clothing was dry. Her only conclusion was he had bathed before she interrupted him. The white silk that usually donned his torso was carefully wrapped around her. Speechless, her mouth gapped like a fish out of water as she tried to comprehend the meaning of Sesshomaru’s actions and why he wasn’t acting like his usually stubborn, high and mighty self.

“I… don’t think I understand,” she whispered while pulling the haori closer around her shivering bodying.

“Hn.”

“Aren’t you going to say something?”

The next few moments happened so fast she couldn’t do anything to stop the series of events. She was lifted from the ground, pulled into the air, and dropped upon the shore of the mainland. Just as she looked around, she saw Sesshomaru vanish into the trees. In the distance she picked up on her friends calling her name. They were worried, but she didn’t call back. She simply looked up to watch the movement in the sky.

“I wonder what this all means,” she ponder watching the figure floating off among the stars.
