Chapter 76 - Words Forgotten
This was written for Stella's Word Prompt Game, Prompt: Chagrin
Kagome awoke the next morning with a groan. "Ungh, why does it feel like my brain is trying to escape from my skull?" she asked softly, pain obvious in her voice.
Sesshoumaru mentally winced. He knew he shouldn't have allowed her to drink as much as she had, and now she was paying for his lack of action. He should have cut her off much earlier than he had, but he'd been enjoying her lowered inhibitions, especially when she finally confessed her true feelings for him. That didn't stop the feelings of guilt, however, at her pain.
"You had too much wine last night," he confessed.
"Oh," she mumbled, trying to remember the night before. She could vaguely recall eating roasted rabbit and peaches while talking with the taiyoukai. She blushed as she remembered trying to make Sesshoumaru eat. She'd been behaving like an idiot and she was humiliated. "I'm sorry," she whispered.
"For what?" he asked, utterly confused.
"For acting like a fool."
"You were not foolish, only intoxicated, and this Sesshoumaru found it endearing," he said, trying to assure her that she'd done nothing wrong.
"But I tried to force feed you rabbit! Gods, what else did I do?"
"You cannot remember?" he asked, fighting down a frown. She didn't remember telling him she loved him? She didn't recall his confessing the same?
"Everything is fuzzy and spotty," she admitted. "I need water." Sesshoumaru handed her the wine bottle they'd emptied the evening before and she lifted a brow. "Hair of the dog doesn't work. I'm dehydrated. I need to drink water."
Sesshoumaru furrowed his brow in confusion. "I filled it with water," he said before inquiring about her strange phrase. "Hair of the dog?"
Kagome laughed, only to groan as the sound aggravated her headache. "Hair of the dog. It's... let me see. When you drink too much, some people think drinking more in the morning will make the hangover go away. Hair of the dog that bit you. It's silly. Hangovers are caused by dehydration, among other things. Alcohol dehydrates the body. Drinking more would only make it worse." She accepted the bottle he offered and drank quickly from it. "Thanks for getting this for me."
"I should have gotten you water last night. Then you would not feel ill," he said. 'And you also would remember that you told me you loved me last night,' he continued silently. If she didn't remember, he wasn't going to remind her. He knew she'd only said it because of the alcohol, that she hadn't intended to tell him, and so he would spare her being angry with herself. He had only confessed his love because she had. He still didn't think she was ready to hear the true depth of his feelings. Too bad he didn't know that hearing those words from his lips would make her happier than she'd ever been before.
"We need to head back to the others now," Kagome said, her tone almost a whine.
"You do not truly wish to do so," he stated rather than asked.
"I'm enjoying this, being with just you. No eyes on us all the time, no rude noises when we kiss. I wish we could stay like this longer, but we need to get back and start travelling again. Those shards won't find themselves, and Naraku won't kill himself, though it'd be nice if he would."
Sesshoumaru wished he could give Kagome what she desired, but she was right. They had a job to do and hiding in a cabin alone wasn't getting it done. Still, that didn't mean that he wouldn't try to find a way to give her what she wanted as well. Perhaps they could begin camping away from the others every night. That would give them the privacy she desired, privacy he would make good use of.
Kagome sighed and snuggled close to the taiyoukai. "We'll go in a little while. I want to stay like this for a few more minutes."
The taiyoukai smirked and pulled her body even closer. "As you wish."
