Chapter Three: Fairy Tale
There was a mermaid who lived deep down in Poseidon’s domain. She was a very happy mermaid who was loved by everyone. When she sang, her voice would echo though the waters and even sometimes onto the surface world where even the sirens would be jealous of her voice. She was happy, but at the same time, very lonely. Her sisters always thought less of her, but only could only think it was because they were jealous of her voice and how she sounded.
One day, the mermaid was swimming near the surface when she heard the loud thunder of lightning and the sound of men struggling above. She wondered to herself if she should go and see, but the echoing of her father Poseidon told her to never approach the humans above. But as she was about to swim away, she saw one man fall into the water.
Captivated by his looks, the mermaid swam to the man and brought him to the surface to breath. She tried her best, and finally she was able to bring him to a beach where he could be safe. She smiled softly as his looks as she brushed away his hair to look better at the face of the man she had saved. The mermaid knew that she had done a forbidden thing and had fallen in love with the man. As he began to awaken, she quickly hid herself from him. Seeing him look around, she began to sing softly so the wind could carry her wonderful voice and bring it to the man. She knew that he would never forget the sound.
Weeks went by and the mermaid could not forget about the human male. Her songs began to be songs of longing and missing him. Then she heard a rumor. A rumor about a sea witch that could help her in her time of need.
Swimming as fast as her fin could take her, the mermaid found her way to the old sea witch who was banished from her father’s domain.
“Give me legs to walk on land so I can find the man that I love and be with him forever.” The mermaid begged of the witch.
The witch looked at the girl and smiled. She knew that the mermaid was the most favorite of Poseidon’s daughters. “I will give you legs to walk on the land my dear,” She said, her voice laced with evil. “I will give you what you desire, but your voice will be mine. And if you cannot gain the favor of the prince by the full moon, you will turn to sea foam.”
The mermaid thought about it for a moment. The full moon was only five away. But living without the man she loved, she accepted anyway.
With a laugh, the witch turned the mermaid to a human girl and sent her on her way.
When the now turned human, the mermaid laid on the beach. Her new limbs ached, and she could not walk very well. Stumbling around a little, she was quickly caught by the very man that she was seeking to find. She opened her mouth to tell him of her love, but she found, that her voice was gone completely. Sadden, but not given up hope, she tried to communicate with the man
“I’m sorry,” The man said, confused at what the girl was trying to convey. “I do not understand what you’re trying to say. But come with me to my castle. I’m sure someone will be able to help.”
Happily the mermaid followed the man she loved, who she found was a prince. But when she came to the castle, the mermaid was in shock as a woman ran up and hugged the very man she gave up everything for.
“This is my fiancée.” The prince said with a smile as he wrapped his arm around the woman’s waist. “She saved me when I was lost from a shipwreck. When I woke on the beach, I could hear this beautiful sound coming from the ocean. It was such a beautiful sound that I feel in love with it as soon as it reached my ears.”
The mermaid was happy and tried to tell him that that was her. But quickly she stopped at his next words.
“My fiancée here informed me that it was the sirens trying to beckon me back to the ocean. I was glad when she told me. I am alive because of her.”
Devastated, the mermaid ran away from the prince, her heart breaking from his words.
For four days she cried by the beach, her tears turning into pearls as she shed tears.
“Dear sister!” Another mermaid called.
The mermaid looked up to see her five sisters before her, one holding a dagger.
“Sister, if you stab the prince in the heart you will not turn into sea foam! Please dear sister!”
The mermaid looked at the dagger and took it from them.

As Kagome opened her mouth to continue the story, the bell rang, causing the group of students who where listening to her to look up.
“Tell us the rest of it Kagome!” Kouga demanded.
Both Sango and Miroku nodded, almost begging Kagome to continue.
Sesshomaru sighed as he placed his book down. “Free time is over class. And so is school. She can finish her story afterwards.”
The group groaned as they stood up and began to file out of the class, Kagome included.
“Higurashi,” Sesshomaru said, his voice firm, “You’re to say.”
Kagome grumbled as she sat in her chair. As soon as the last student left, she saw his golden eyes meet with her brown ones.
“Finish your story.”
Kagome cracked a smile at him.
“That night, the mermaid went to the prince’s chambers with the knife in her hand. Standing above him, she watched as he turned to his back, his face basking in the moonlight. Instantly her heart wavered and tears began to fall down her face. She could not kill the man she loved. Even if it would save her life, she could not do it.
“The mermaid kissed his lips softly and mouthed the words ‘I will always love you.’ With that she left the room, and in the morning she turned to nothing but a puddle of sea foam.”
Sesshomaru listened to her intently and sat back when he heard the end. “I would have killed him if I was her.” He said softly.
The teen girl chuckled as she grabbed her stuff and headed out of the door. “Don’t think too much about it Taisho-sensei. After all, it’s a fairy tale.”
