Kagome banged her head off her desk. "This assignment is impossible. I don't mind writing a paper on a historical object but this is just ridiculous," she complained looking at her object. "The teacher must hang out with Gramps to consider this as an artifact."
Pulling out paper she stared at the blank lines trying to find the ties that put a rock and important moments in history together. "I'll bet this rock was picked up out of the school yard." While lost in her thoughts she never noticed the presence behind her.
"You haven't completed that assignment yet?" Kagome shrieked as she spun around clutching her chest. "What is wrong with you? You have to have some cat youkai in your blood line. And no I'm not done with this paper, this assignment is impossible!"
"You are over-reacting. This Sesshoumaru found this assignment to be fairly simple. What is it that you cannot comprehend about it?" Sesshoumaru asked raising a perfect eyebrow.
"You would find it simple; you had to write about a sword that healed people! That would be an easy thing to write a paper on. What is there to write about a rock in history?" Kagome argued jabbing the eraser of a pencil into his chest.
Sesshoumaru looked down at the pencil then at Kagome. Holding out his arm he waited for Kagome to loop her arm through. "Let's take a walk, I'm sure I can change your mind about a rock being important to history."
Kagome looked at him skeptically but looped her arm through his and let him lead her down the stairs and onto the shrine grounds. She didn't see anything important. "Sesshoumaru I'm confused, I've seen everything the shrine has to offer. What does this have to do with my homework assignment?" Kagome asked exasperated.
Sesshoumaru looked down at her and led her to the ancient well. "What do you see?"
Kagome looked at him confused than looked out at the well. "I see a well."
Sesshoumaru sighed and continued, "What else do you see?"
Kagome continued to look at the old well scanning the entire area, there was not a lot there. "I see dirt."
Sesshoumaru nodded, this was a good start. "And what does dirt contain?" he asked hoping to get her to see what he was trying to point out.
Kagome scrunched up her nose in thought and hesitantly replied, "Rocks."
Sesshoumaru smiled, "Exactly, rocks. Let us continue," he replied as he continued to lead Kagome around the shrine grounds. They walked through the storage shed looking at the old artifacts. Sesshoumaru had Kagome recall the stories her grandfather told her growing up. Made her think about the importance each artifact held in each story.
Finally they ended up at the Goshinboku and he pulled Kagome close to him. "What did you learn from your little walk around the shrine grounds?"
Kagome looked into his golden eyes that have seen much more than she could ever comprehend and smiled. "I think I understand what you were trying to show me," she smiled and gave him a peck on the lips before pulling out of his embrace. Sesshoumaru looked affronted that she would just leave him like that as he watched her walk back towards the house.
Kagome just smiled back at him and laughed "Don't look at me like that, I have a paper to finish and you would be too much of a distraction."
Sesshoumaru shook his head at her and headed for home, he would see how her assignment turned out tomorrow when she presented it to the class.
Kagome stayed up through the night writing her paper for her history class. Sesshoumaru had helped her a great deal and she would make it up to him later. She thought about all the stories that she told Sesshoumaru and thought about all the things he must have gone through. What would it have been like to witness a great war or even a great general fall in love? She started writing about being a rock and witnessing all the great events in history: both listed and forgotten. A rock, sitting there waiting for someone to pick it up and look at it wondering at the knowledge hidden in its depths.
The following morning Kagome met up with Sesshoumaru outside of the school. "Were you able to finish your assignment?" he asked curious as to what she came up with.
Kagome smiled at him knowing he wanted to know what the final product contained. "As a matter of fact, I did. And I couldn't have done it without the help of a certain Taiyoukai pointing out the importance of a rock. Although you are going to have to wait until history to find out what I came up with," she teased as she turned and headed for class.
Sesshoumaru followed behind wondering how he ever came to be attached to a woman that could act like a child more often than not. Kagome turned and smiled back at him, her blue eyes shining like the ocean, and Sesshoumaru was reminded of why that one woman held so much importance to him. He caught up to her and pulled her close to him as he dipped his head down to claim her lips with his reasserting his claim to those fools who wanted what was his.
The highly anticipated history class finally arrived for Sesshoumaru as he followed Kagome into the room and towards his seat. Sesshoumaru presented a perfect paper as was expected of him. Kagome waited for a few others before she stood and made her way to the podium. She looked over at Sesshoumaru as she started her presentation. He held such an important role in her paper whether others knew about it or not. Kagome retold the hidden wonders that followed political leaders and famous artists alike telling that their inspiration came from somewhere and that whether a person was there or not, their story was recorded for the wonder and creativity of future generations.
When she finished Kagome smiled and walked back to her seat. As the rest of the class finished up their presentations Sesshoumaru leaned over towards Kagome and murmured to her how proud he was of her. She beamed up at him and turned her attention back towards the front of the room.
Leading Kagome out of the building she turned and wrapped her arms around his slim waist. Sesshoumaru took hold of her and looked down waiting to hear what she had to say. Kagome stared into his beautiful eyes and the knowledge they showed waiting to be told and kissed him. Pulling away she leaned towards his ear and whispered before kissing the underside of his jaw, "There is more than one kind of rock. Thank you for being my rock, my one constant in my life."
