"There are certain things you should know about her, Kagome," Sesshoumaru started. "She is a very wealthy woman with too much time on her hands. I don't know how much you will have in common with her."
Kagome gave a bit of a snort and turned to look out the window of the huge limo as it was pulling up to the gates of his parent's estate. She could not believe the beauty that was all around her. Tokyo was such an urban area that seeing this much green and open area only an hour away seemed like a huge shock. The large white walls surrounding his parent's home did not show her much, except that the estate was huge, old, and beautifully landscaped. Once the car cleared the gates she began to see various rows of Japanese maples, Sakura trees, koi ponds, and zen gardens. It looked like an imperial palace that she had visited on a field trip once. Kagome looked over at Sesshoumaru and wondered how someone who had grown up in such opulence could be so well grounded.
Everyone knew that the Taisho family was wealthy. Sesshoumaru's father was the founder of one of the world's top software companies, and had made nearly a trillion dollars since World War 2. Sesshoumaru grew up in the shadow of his great and terrible father, but instead of going to some fancy prep school, he attended a public one and went to university on his own merits. No one could claim that Sesshoumaru Taisho was taking anything in life for granted. He made his way into the world of business using an assumed name, unwilling for anyone to give him a leg up. Kagome met him in university and knew at that moment that he would be the one she would spend her life with. A fire sparked between them that neither could deny, and now, three years later, she was finally ready to meet his mother.
Sesshoumaru sighed as he realized that no amount of warning would do...Kagome just did not understand women like his mother. That was part of her charm. Kagome wanted to wait to marry until she was out of school and working on her own, so that she could have equal say in their future. While this was highly unusual for Japanese society, he loved her enough to see her point. He pinched the bridge of his nose...'Today is going to be a nightmare.'
A butler opened the car door for them and led them into the foyer of the main building. Waiting for them was the most elegant woman that Kagome had ever seen. Sesshoumaru's mother stood a full foot taller than Kagome, with her son's exotic silver hair wrapped up in the hairstyle favored by 1980's anchorwomen the world over. Kagome had always thought that they looked like football helmets. The woman exuded an air of confidence. She came up to Kagome and gave her a warm hug.
"Welcome, dear!"
Sesshoumaru looked at his mother with his mouth agape. Who was this woman??
"It is nice to meet you, Mrs. Taisho," Kagome said politely.
"Please dear, call me Ellen. You must come with me. We can have tea in the wrapping room. Do you wrap dear?"
"Wrap?" Kagome asked. She had no idea what this crazy woman was talking about.
"Presents. I have a whole room devoted to just gift wrap and ribbons. I couldn't let that dreadful American Candy Spelling do better than us Japanese, could I, my pet?" Ellen Taisho took Kagome's hand and started to lead her into her private wing, talking all the while. Kagome looked back and gave Sesshoumaru a look that clearly said: HELP!
Sesshoumaru chuckled and turned to the butler, "New antidepressant?"
"No sir," Jakken said sorrowfully, "Much worse. Your mother has started watching Dr. Phil."
