The Diary by Tomosaho

Chapter One

Hello readers.  This is my first fanfiction in ....years, so please be kind.  It's also my first Inuyasha fanfiction.

This is also based on another fanfiction, written by CiraArana's The Diary, which can be found here, http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2094550/1/The_Diary .  It was very inspirational to me, so I asked permission to post my version of the story.  It'll deviate from the original a few chapters in, and take a different route from the original.

Anyway, as I'm sure you know, I don't own Inuyasha.

The Diary

Light from the late afternoon sun cast a golden glow upon the field.  Spring had arrived very early this year, earlier than anyone could ever remember, and the air was warming a little more everyday.  Winter colors were being stored away as the Ume blossoms and the Sakura blossoms fell together towards the earth.  As the call of birds returning from their pilgrimage to the south sounded across the field, an odd assortment of beings broke from the tree line to walk intently to the little stream near the far edge.

They did not match their stride in the lightest.  The youngest of the quartet, a girl of twelve years in a blue and yellow kimono, ran urgently across the clearing towards a small stream.  Her long hair whipped behind her, falling out of the braid she now primarily used.  The girl's body, still growing and lanky, moved with a grace born from forest life.  She slowed as she reached the near bank, calling in an unusually serious manner of the presence of herbs along the bank and fish in the water.

The next was a rather gruesome creature, now only as tall as the girl's knees, which seemed to resemble a walking toad.  He was struggling with the reigns of a draconic mount, larger than any horse and two headed.  It moved sluggishly and seemed to want nothing more than to lie down and nurse its ghastly wounds.  All along its right side were slashes that bled slowly and painfully.  One slice had gone through the muscle in its front leg, causing it to limp woefully.

Bringing up the rear was a tall and magnificent demon.  His skin was pale like moonlight, and his hair, swaying weightlessly with every movement, shone as if made of spun silver.  His demonic aura reached out across the field, warning all strangers of the folly it would be to show themselves.  Eyes of pure gold gazed indifferently upon the scene before him.

The beast of burden soon reached the bank of the stream, collapsing upon his good side and determined to never move again.  The girl knelt near his two large heads, crooning empathetically and scratching behind his ears.  Grumbling, the toad dropped his staff and began gathering the herbs needed that would only grow along the water.  Soon the sounds of his discomfort rang out, for the plant was not at all willing to part from the earth and had entered the battle well armed.  The demon sat himself under a nearby willow tree, whose new leaves dipped down to caress the surface of the stream.

"Sesshoumaru-sama?" The girl asked, worry evident in her newly deepened voice.  "Will Ah-Un be all right?"  She had asked this question many times before, but in the five years she had traveled with the demons, she had never seen the two-headed beast so injured.

"Ah-Un is capable, Rin." The demon lord replied, exactly as he had done every other time she had asked that day.  "Jaken." He called, not bothering to direct his gaze towards the toad.

"Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama!" Jaken shouted with his usual enthusiasm for all things related to his luminous lord.  His arms were laden with the necessary weeds, his hands covered with scratches and sweat rolling down his bald head.  He seemed to exude fatigue, yet upon the call of his lord, he had jumped to attention, his spine strait as a rod.

"Boil water." The lord ordered, his voice perfectly free of emotion.  He was the epitome of self-control, his face as calm as a frozen lake.

"Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama!" Jaken exclaimed, beginning yet another fit of rambling. "Of course, Sesshoumaru-sama!  That is exactly what this lowly creature should have done.  My tardiness is shameful.  I should have alread-"

"Jaken." The lord said, his tone just as neutral as always. "Now."

"Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama!"  That said, he dropped his bundle near the girl and began to rummage in the sacks tied to Ah-Un's saddle for a pot.  Rin, wanting to do anything she could, began to rummage for firewood.  Partway through her search, she came upon a half buried oddity hidden under some bushes.  It was worn, certainly, for it had definitely been lying under those shrubs for quite some time.  That was hardly what made it so odd.  It was a bag, made of a material the growing girl could not identify.  The yellow cloth shifted in her fingers like leaves, and felt waxy like them too, yet it was certainly a fabric of sorts.  It had been sewn together like fabric.

Rin had some trouble getting the bag open.  The only way that it seemed possible was by an odd metal contraption that looked disturbingly like teeth, cold, dirty, and hungry.  Rin was half afraid that it would bite her, but she tentatively she reached out a finger, poking it while holding her breath and nervous that it would attack her. Slowly she began to relax when nothing happened.  She examined the odd mechanism and found that it would only open by means of a lever pulled across the teeth and breaking them apart.

Inside was a collection of old paper, small leaves of it that had strangely been stitched together on one side.  It was bound between two pieces of cloth-covered wood and appeared to be closed with a rusty, metal lock.  Rin had never seen anything like it, but she was finding that to be a rather normal occurrence today.

Abandoning her bundle of sticks, she picked it up, turning it this way and that.  The paper had surely seen much better times, but seemed to still be in fair condition.  She tried to open it, but the lock still held, pursuing its purpose dutifully.  A look of frustration soon bloomed upon her face, her annoyance mounting.  She really wanted to know what this strange thing was!

"Sesshoumaru-sama!" Rin called out, running back to him with both her bundle and treasure in tow.  "Look what I found!"

The demon lord lifted his eyes slowly without concern in her direction.  His golden gaze focused first on the look of determination in her eyes.  It was a new look she had taken on as she soon approached adolescence, one he was soon learning would foreshadow one of her odd moments of individuality and rebelliousness.  Sesshoumaru nearly groaned at the sight of it.

He then focused on her discovery, his eyes hiding his intrigue.  His ward stopped just at his side, breathless with her curiosity, and held out her find.  The Lord of the West took it into his one hand, careful of his claws, and examined it with seeming indifference.

Such an odd thing it was, his thought.  He had never seen its like.  Who would cut up paper then sew it together?  Surely it was easier to make a scroll?  And what on earth was this strange yellow material?  What plant or creature had made it?  His interest growing, he easily broke the lock and flipped it open the cover to the first page.

The Diary of Higurashi Kagome.

Underneath was an odd assortment of words with numerous characters lost to water damage.  They were labeled, as far as he could tell, as home address and te-le-phu-o-ne  number.  What on earth was a te-le-phu-o-ne and why does it have a number?  And where on earth is To-kyo?  The script was worn and parts of if were damaged, but nonetheless, these odd characters couldn't be because of that.  The writing was smooth and graceful, clearly written with a feminine hand.  But it was in kanji, something that wasn't taught to almost all women.  So, surely this must come from an extremely noble lady, one of the highest class.  But why would her diary be out here, and why in such an odd form.  *

Kagome.... That name was familiar.  Yet he couldn't for the life of him remember why.  He hardly kept up to date with the coming and goings of the human nobility, so this lady's name shouldn't strike a chord with him.

He turned the pages carefully until he reached the first one that was legible.  It was dated oddly.  He recognized the month, which marked the entry at around May.  Odd characters could be found within the entry, of which he had never seen the like. Perhaps he had been away from his castle for too long? **

Dear Diary,

I'm so sorry I haven't written to you in such a long time, but so much has been happening lately I can barely keep focused!  I just finally found the time to get away from everyone to clear my mind.

Oh, but I'm so glad I was able to get away because I have so much to tell you!  The last few days have been extremely eventful!  You see, after Tessaiga was broken,-

Tessaiga!  Father's sword!  But why would it be mentioned in this diary?

- which I already told you all about, Inuyasha had gone to Totosai-sama to get it fixed.  The old demon had used one of Inuyasha's fangs to repair it, but it made the sword very unwieldy.  Inuyasha could barely lift it, and couldn't use the Kaze no Kizu at all!

Inuyasha!  How strange that both he and the sword should be mentioned.  Sesshoumaru flipped the pages back to the title to reread the characters for the authoress' name.  ... Kagome... that name was familiar... where had he heard it?  Clearly he knew now it must have been in connection with his foul half-brother, but Sesshoumaru knew only a handful of the boy's connections, and only by scent.

Sesshoumaru took a whiff of the book, but it had been in the wild for a very long time, years from the looks of it.  It no longer carried anyone's scent.  Feeling the beginnings of irritation forming, the demon lord returned to the page he had been reading and continued.

Because of this, he was no longer able to hold onto his sword in battle, and was always in danger of transforming.  He was terribly guilty about killing those bandits.  But not only this, Inuyasha was afraid that he would hurt all of us traveling with him.

Upon this sentence, Sesshoumaru's recognition of Higurashi Kagome suddenly came to him in a flash.  She was a companion of Inuyasha, a member of his group who traveled exclusively with him.  It was the girl, the priestess that wore such strange garments!  This was her diary!  And, what she wrote of in this passage was an event that the demon lord could remember happening five years ago.

Inuyasha had foolishly let the Tessaiga be broken by the incarnation of Naraku, Goshinki, and had succumbed to the demon blood that flowed within his veins.  But he was a mindless demon, not worthy of the power he possessed and certainly not worthy of the honorable blood of their father.  Sesshoumaru had defeated him, while the girl, Kagome, had subdued him and returned him to his rightful state.

As far as Sesshoumaru knew, the boy had the sword repaired and went on his merry way.  It seemed there was more to the story.  But to think that he would learn this through the old diary of the boy's wench.

"...milord?" Jaken inquired, bringing the lord out of his musings.  "The remedy you suggested is ready, and we applied it to Ah-Un's wounds.  From the looks of them, they will take at least a week or two to heal.  I have also procured nourishment for both the beast and the girl.  Is there anything else this lowly servant can do?"

"Do not disturb me."

"Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama!"  And with that, the imp scuttled off to the other side of the fire that had been built while the lord pondered the diary.  As soon as Jaken sat, Rin shifted near him and whispered inquiries about her lord and her discovery, but the toad shushed her instantly.  Jaken knew quite well not to go near his lord when the demon spoke with that tone!

So, he went off by himself to find Totosai-sama.  I don't know the details of what went on, but Myoga-sama later told me that Inuyasha asked Totosai-sama to make the Tessaiga lighter.  After some quibbling, Totosai-sama told him the only course of action.

Inuyasha would have to use Tessaiga to destroy Ryuukossei, a dragon that Inuyasha's father had fought and sealed in a valley.  Ryuukossei was tremendously powerful, so much so that he gave the Inu-no-Taisho fatal wounds.   But, by finally defeating the dragon, a task that even his honorable father could not accomplish, Inuyasha would become stronger than his father and be able to master the Tessaiga.

Is that so?  How irritating!  To think that the boy would have the arrogance to even attempt such a feat...

So, Inuyasha set out to find the dragon, with Myoga-sama as his lead.  He grumbled the whole way about how it was cowardly to defeat a sleeping opponent, and how much more exciting it would be if Ryuukossei was awake.

....the Arrogance....  A snarl formed on the lord's face, a growl edging upwards, ready to vibrate out towards the forest before Sesshoumaru regained control of his senses.  Really, how juvenile of him to lose control over such a slight.  The events the girl wrote of had taken place years ago, and he was whining over it like a child!

Myoga-sama did his best to convince Inuyasha that such a wish was foolhardy and would grant only his death, but we all know Inuyasha!

Indeed, Sesshoumaru thought, nearly rolling his eyes at the boy's antics.

While those two were traveling, the rest of us were heading for Totosai-sama.  We found him and were able to keep him from escaping.  Oh dear, but I think both he and Myoga-sama have come to secretly associate us with nothing but danger.

Smart of him, Sesshoumaru sneered.

Nonetheless, we were able to get out of him where Inuyasha had run off to.  Well, we were all concerned, because Inuyasha can be quite stubborn and foolhardy, and especially so with anything that concerns his strength.  We knew he was putting himself in tons of danger!

She says that as is if it were something new.

So, of course, we began racing to catch up.  Miles away, even before we had entered the valley, we began to feel the aura of the dragon.  His power was immense!

Of course he was, for only the strongest of demons could fell this Sesshoumaru's Honorable Father.

This only increased our resolve to find Inuyasha!  It hardly mattered that the dragon was sealed and helpless, because Inuyasha just has a knack for leaping headfirst into trouble.  He just attracts it to him, the way a moth is lured to fire.

An accurate description of Inuyasha, yet she hardly mentions the stupidity of his actions while luring the danger to him.

And of course, our worries were well founded.  On the way there, we saw dark clouds form on the horizon and we felt the dragon's aura increase tremendously.  Oh, and to think we thought him powerful before!  We increased our stride and along the way encountered Myoga-sama fleeing.  That's never a good sign!

Sesshoumaru could feel the edge of his lips twitching, but he quickly suppressed the smile before it could form.  Really, though, that was just like the cowardly flea!

He told us that Naraku was there when they arrived.  He had released the dragon from his sleep and had set him upon Inuyasha!

Naraku!  Now there was a name the demon lord had not heard in some time.  Sesshoumaru remembered the battle that had finally destroyed the wretched being.  The memory of that event was much clearer than the one he was reading.  It had happened only a year ago, in the forest Inuyasha presided over.  That abomination had been a fierce opponent, pulling every foul trick he knew to destroy his enemies.  But his enemies numbered far more than Naraku apparently knew, and he had been overpowered.

Disputes over who had landed the final blow were still discussed.  Inuyasha, the cur, still foolishly believed that he had defeated the atrocity.  Sesshoumaru, though, was of the belief that it was the priestess' arrow that had done Naraku in.  Yet, her holy arrow and boy's wind attack had landed at almost exactly the same time.  Human eyesight was hardly as good as his own, a half-breed's hardly better, and because he certainly wasn't going to defend some wisp of a woman, the rows continued.

Myoga-sama had warned Inuyasha to flee, but he would hear none of it.  Inuyasha said that everything was much better now, because now it be a real battle.  Oh, Inuyasha!  Really, how can you be so foolish!

Because he's a fool, Sesshoumaru thought, completely serious in his reasoning.

During the time between when Myoga-sama fled and when we arrived, I don't know what happened, mostly because Inuyasha would never admit to losing.

Sesshoumaru smirked at the half-breed's suffering, feeling great pleasure at the account.

When we arrived, we came across Inuyasha in a terrible situation!  He had lost hold of his sword and had transformed into a demon!

So he had transformed again?  Sesshoumaru sighed in exasperation.  Had he not warned the boy about such a situation?

I called to him, begged him to turn back, but my words wouldn't reach him.  Instead, he jumped towards Ryuukossei, Tessaiga forgotten, and injured the dragon.  This was all wrong, though!  Inuyasha would never be able to master the Tessaiga this way!

And yet he miraculously manages to overcome his blood and master the sword, all without serious injury?  Sesshoumaru felt his annoyance growing at the thought of the boy's wondrous luck.

While fighting, Totosai-sama tried to leave, and very well tried to take me with him!  I wouldn't stand for that because I could never leave Inuyasha's side!  I promised I would never leave him!

Such loyalty, Sesshoumaru thought sarcastically.  She was always by his side, though, now that the demon thought about it.  Ever since he first encountered her, she was always with the miserable half-breed whenever he encountered them.

But Totosai-sama said that there was no use staying, since Inuyasha had chosen to fight as a demon.  So, I told them that they could escape if they wanted to, but I wasn't going to leave.  I hardly cared if Inuyasha had lost his sense of judgment, because I just couldn't leave him when he was battling for his life!

A shame she didn't leave then, the demon lord thought.  If she had, the cur might very well have died.

But right about when Totosai-sama was about to let me down, Miroku-sama pointed out that Inuyasha was acting strangely... well, strangely for Inuyasha, that is.

Sesshoumaru felt his lips twitching once again.

He was moving slowly towards Tessaiga.  He had decided to fight with it!  Inuyasha was fighting the demon blood in his veins, doing everything he could.  He truly wanted to fight with his sword, and not as a mindless demon!  Oh, I was so proud of him!

How endearing, Sesshoumaru thought, disgust filling him.  Her warm sentiments for the half-breed were truly vile.

But right as he was about to grasp the hilt, Ryuukossei let out another lightning attack aimed directly for Inuyasha!  Oh, my heart stopped!  I was sure he had died!  We all were sure of it!  But as the light rescinded, we saw Inuyasha who was holding onto the sheath of Tessaiga.  Oh, this is one of the smartest things he has ever done!

Even mutts can be graced with luck.

He had done this before when he fought the Thunder Brothers and had used his sheath to ward off their lightning attacks.  The barrier of the sheath has always protected Inuyasha.  But the sheath wouldn't protect Inuyasha a second time.  Ryuukossei's attack was much stronger than any the Thunder Brothers could muster.

Undoubtedly.

Just as Totosai-sama had told us this, the dragon let out another attack at Inuyasha.  He wasn't prepared for this one, though!  Just when it was about to hit, Miroku-sama unleashed his Wind Tunnel.  The power of Miroku-sama's curse cannot be extolled properly, the winds call everything into that darkness.  Yet the lightning attack was so strong, that Miroku-sama couldn't call it to him!  Nonetheless, he was able to misdirect the attack, so that it missed Inuyasha!

The Wind Tunnel... Sesshoumaru remember that as well.  It had been important in the final battle, but not as a weapon.  As the demon lord remembered, it was a curse that grew worse every year.  At that point in time, the curse was so strong that the monk expected to die at any moment.  He wouldn't have dared use it in that battle, but Naraku had other plans.  He opened it farther, so that even the rosary around the monk's arm was no longer effective.  It had begun to pull everything into its darkness, just as the priestess had said.  In fact, it had begun to pull the priestess in, as well.  But as she passed over his head, Sesshoumaru had reached up and grabbed her, pulling her back to the earth.

She had given him such an odd look when he did.  Her eyes had grown wide, and a rosy blush had formed on her cheeks.  Sesshoumaru supposed she had been embarrassed by the whole ordeal. After that, the priestess let her sacred arrow fly into the Tunnel, so that it would dissipate the effects long enough for the monk to revive the rosary's power.

We were so afraid for Inuyasha, because how could he win against such a terrifying opponent?  It had taken all of Miroku-sama's power... we could see the look of astonishment and fear on his face.  So what could Inuyasha possibly do?  He surely couldn't use that Bakuryuuha, Tessaiga's ultimate technique.  Inuyasha was struggling so with the sword, he just couldn't learn a new technique now!

Bakuryuuha... Sesshoumaru remembered that, as well.  It had come as quite a surprise to him when he first saw it about four years ago.  Both Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha had been fighting against a powerful demon, although they certainly weren't fighting together!  During the battle, the demon let out a fierce energy attack towards the half-breed.  Sesshoumaru was sure the boy would be destroyed, but instead he cut the attack with the wind scar, reversing the flow of the attack so that it rebounded on the demon.  The demon lord had hid his surprise well, but rage had boiled over him at the sight of boy, so smug with their father's great sword slung over his shoulder.  The cur hardly deserved such a magnificent weapon!

But then Inuyasha grasped the hilt of Tessaiga, and we could all begin to feel his demon aura dissipating.  He then took a battle stance, Tessaiga transformed, and his demonic markings vanished.  We were sure our Inuyasha was back, though, when gave this corny line about how no one steps on his sword and lives to tell about it.  Oh, Inuyasha!

Corny, indeed.

As soon as he said this, though, he nearly dropped the sword due to its weight.  Inuyasha still hadn't mastered it, yet, so of course he wasn't any better at wielding it.

... Nothing but a hopeless half-breed.

But soon after this, a weird pulse came out of Tessaiga and it began to glow.  Inuyasha then was able to lift the sword easily!  By choosing to fight with it, instead of his demonic powers, he had begun to master the Tessaiga!

Was that really all it took?  The sword is too easy on him.

He then charged Ryuukossei and stabbed the dragon in the heart with the sword.  It was the worst wound the dragon had received so far.  We all hoped that it would have been enough to kill Ryuukossei, but, of course, we've never had much luck.  The dragon then began to send more lightning attacks at Inuyasha, but because Tessaiga was so much lighter, Inuyasha could dodge much more quickly now.

That's hardly going to do him any good.  A battle was won with power, not footwork.

All of this dodging wasn't going to get him anywhere, though!

Sesshoumaru arched an eyebrow as he wondered at the girl's abnormal show of intellect.

I could see how frustrated Inuyasha was, but during the battle, Inuyasha began to smell the wind scar again.  Although I wasn't aware of it at the time, the wind scar was different from before.  The wind scar was no longer present because of the shifting of two demonic auras against one another.  It now twisted around the Tessaiga itself.

Sesshoumaru wondered at this.  He remembered realizing sometime ago in battle that something about the Tessaiga was different.  He could feel it, but until now he had never understood what had changed with the sword's Kaze no Kizu.

As soon as he realized this, Inuyasha was all brass and confidence again.

...Of course....

Ryuukossei then let out another attack at Inuyasha, who then let out the Kaze no Kizu.  The two met in midair and let out a great explosion.  We wondered if it had destroyed the dragon, but it was to no avail.  He was still just as strong as ever.

Obviously, since the Wind Scar had hardly been effective when this Sesshoumaru's father used it.

Totosai-sama shouted at Inuyasha, telling him to run.  He told Inuyasha that he should be happy he could wield the Tessaiga now, and I admit I agreed with him.  Totosai-sama told us that only the Bakuryuuha would destroy this dragon.  Surely Inuyasha could retreat and learn it later, then return.  It seemed like such a rational decision, but then again, I don't think there's a single person who would call Inuyasha rational.

True.

Inuyasha just wanted so much to surpass his father in strength.  Ugh, that boy!

That cur!

Just then, Ryuukossei began to charge up for the strongest attack he had used so far!  The air around him was glowing, and the rocks around him began to disintegrate.

I can remember it still, how the power pulsed over my skin, running through me so violently.  The demonic aura had nearly made me sick, but I overcame the discomfort.

Something a priestess should know how to do, Sesshoumaru thought.  He was hardly impressed with her miserable display of strength.

Inuyasha then charged towards him, sword raised.  I wasn't sure at all if Inuyasha could withstand the attack Ryuukossei had planned for him, for it was truly tremendous.  We all moved away so as not to be caught up in the blast.  But this sort of thing would never have stopped Inuyasha.

Why is that boy still alive?  When will his luck run out?

We all thought Inuyasha was a goner.  There was no way he could survive such an attack.

Yet he obviously did.  Sesshoumaru did not understand why she kept saying such things.

But then, as it was about to hit, something miraculous happened.  Inuyasha lifted his sword above his head and sent it down in a terrifying arc.  It seemed as if all the elements themselves had merged into this one point, and with the release of their power, whirlpools flew out towards Ryuukossei.  They ripped the dragon into shreds and shreds, till there was nothing left of him.

So that pathetic sap actually managed to do it?  Was he even aware of it?

We could all see great astonishment on Inuyasha's face.  I'm sure it matched that on our own.  We all gathered around him to congratulate him, and then he gave Totosai-sama a big pat on the back, thanking him.  Inuyasha asked what the old smith had done to the Tessaiga, saying it was much better than before.  That's when we all realized that Inuyasha didn't have a clue what he had just done.

... as I thought.

Totosai-sama told us in more detail how the attack worked and then explained that the big trick about the whole technique is that the person using it has to know where to cut.  The wielder's aura must be stronger than that of his enemy as well.  This all would have been very impressive if Inuyasha had known what he was doing.

Indeed, but that was never going to happen, so it appeared Inuyasha was fated to forever remain greatly unimpressive.

But, Inuyasha has a god's luck.  When asked about using the Bakuryuuha, he just said in that arrogant sort of way that all he did was use his nose and his instincts.

...a god's luck... That is all he ever had...

Miroku-sama then said that Inuyasha should be very happy, since he could wield the Tessaiga with ease now.  Inuyasha agreed with that!  He pulled his sword out and used the Kaze no Kizu at will.  It was quite impressive at first, but then he began to do it over and over again, destroying the valley.  It was really quite annoying, but also just a little bit funny.  He really looked like a little boy with a new toy he wanted to brag about to everybody else.

Another accurate description.

But this was all really quite dangerous!  The wind scar isn't something you just throw around!  So, I sat him, and that was the end of that!  Miroku-sama was quite right when he said that one victory and Inuyasha thinks he's invincible!  Really!

Sesshoumaru truly had to use some effort to keep himself from smiling at this.  But the image of the cur being thrown to ground, punished for his own foolishness, was far more amusing than anything he had come across in some time.  Sesshoumaru never said no to a chance to see the whelp punished in such a humiliating way.  The girl's sits were very entertaining, earning his approval.  But her script of the event seemed so much realer than the memory, so much more concrete.  Her physical lettering made it more vivid, and thus, far more amusing.  Strange how this wench's writing could be more interesting than say... a battle.

As we made our way out of that valley, a whole mountain of worry fell off my shoulders!  All of this mess was now over!  And to think it started because of some simple demon.  Just one bite from Goshinki, and a whole world of trouble fell upon us.  Just thank the gods Inuyasha's brother had been there, though, to suppress Inuyasha, or this could have been Much worse.

Sesshoumaru perked up at the mention of his person.

Oh, and this is another thing I want to tell you about... or at least, need to tell you about.  ... I don't really want to.  It's so embarrassing, but my dreams... they've gotten even better... NO, WORSE!  Definitely worse  ...not better.

What on earth is she babbling about, now?

You see, after the last time we... ah... met, my dreams progressed even farther into their little... scenario.  This time, he went even farther, not just... kissing me, and ... touching me... ... well, he ... oh, just get it out, Kagome!  He made love to me!

...What?

It was... oh, it was amazing!  I had really never felt so alive before!  My whole body was just a vessel of bright, luminous feeling!  Every inch of me, my skin, my fingers, my lips, all of it tingled... and trembled as his eyes, those strong golden eyes of his, swept over me, lost in the passion he had inspired!

Oh, but this is wrong!  All wrong!  I shouldn't be dreaming of him this way at all!

...What?

....She dreams of ... the half-breed?  ...And of procreating with him.  But why is she talking about this.  This all seems entirely uncalled for and Sesshoumaru was starting to feel rather uncomfortable.

I mean, I know that he's... desirable.  Any woman can see that!

...that cur?

He's strong, and handsome, and, if you have his loyalty he will protect you from anything!  But, I suppose handsome isn't quite the right word for him... no it isn't.  He's not handsome... he's beautiful.  More beautiful than any man should be!

Oh, it's so shameful!  That even in battle, with so much danger around me, surrounding him, and I'm distracted by his beauty!  He moves so gracefully, though!  Every movement of his is elegant and precise.  He's the epitome of a warrior.

Does she truly believe such foolish things about that boy?  His movements in battle were hardly precise!  He blundered through battle, surviving and winning on mere luck alone.  Why, she even said it before how the boy should be grateful for his god's luck.  She surely must be blinded by her affections!  It wouldn't be the first time Sesshoumaru had seen a somewhat sensible woman turned into an utter fool by love.

Just the way he uses his sword, with such power, such control and expertise...

No, Kagome, No!  Bad thought!  That was not the sword I was talking about!

Is that so, thought Sesshoumaru, smirking.  Really, how interestingly her mind worked.

Oh, damn these dreams!  I use to be such a pure girl before all of this!  After we met, though, I dream of him all the time!  My mind has become so filthy, much worse than Miroku-sama's!

But, I suppose, one can never control one's dreams.  That's surely an impossible task, whether undertaken by a great monk or a great demon!  So, if I cannot control my dreams, then I shouldn't feel guilt.  After all, if I could control them, I certainly wouldn't dream of him!

Ah well, I suppose we all have our own problems... mine are just a little more... embarrassing.  Agh, I'm blushing so much, I hate it! Well, this is all I really wanted to tell you for now, Diary.  Eventful week, no?

Oh, I can hear everyone calling for me!  Got to go!

What a strange account, Sesshoumaru thought.  It was certainly interesting!  He now knew far more about the Tessaiga than he ever could have on his own.  And it certainly confirmed the demon lord's opinion of the boy.  As great a fool if there ever was one!  And really, is this how the human mind worked?  So cluttered and disordered.  The girl could barely keep her thoughts strait.  One second, she's giving a report on the defeat of Ryuukossei... and then giving away the most intimate secrets she has.

But her affection for the half-breed was hardly secret!  So how could she feel it was so shameful to dream of him and... procreating.  God, the image of it.... How could any woman find that miscreant appealing?

...Was it shameful for the humans from... wherever it is she comes from...To-kyo... to not be attracted to those they love?  How odd!  But this was none of Sesshoumaru's concern.  It was an interesting tale, nothing more.  Sesshoumaru held the diary over the flames, no longer interested in the oddity.  Before releasing his hold of the strange artifact, he smirked once more over the priestess' odd affection for the boy.

...And to think she mentioned it after recalling this Sesshoumaru...

The demon lord's eyes widened a heart-beat later with sudden realization.  He pulled the diary away from the flames and quickly reviewed the passages involving the girl's affections.  No... it wasn't Inuyasha... It did make sense because it wasn't the boy at all...

Kagome hadn't been writing of her hidden desires for Inuyasha... She was writing of this Sesshoumaru!

Yay, first chapter done.  I want everyone who reads this to review as a stipulation!

You may have noticed some asterisks floating around.  Those are sort of author notes full of tidbits and personal opinions that I didn't want to just throw into the middle of the story and disrupt the flow.  So, here we go:

*I had two in this paragraph.  First, even though I'm clearly writing in English, and am clearly an American who knows very little about Japan, I want my story to have as much of a Japanese quality that I can create.  This doesn't mean I'm going to throw in Japanese words and sentences, because I hate it when people do that (...and then don't give translations). But, I'm going to try to break up words in a Japanese manner and use Japanese ideas/thoughts.  So, for instance, Sesshomaru's name is broken up as Se-ssho-u-ma-ru.  That's how it's spelt out in the Japanese alphabet.  Kagome is Ka-go-me, not Kag-ome (which is an English bastardization).  That's why I broke up telephone that way, because basically Sesshomaru would be seeing an odd combination of kanji he does know, but doesn't understand why they're together.  In all actuality, he probably wouldn't have been able to pronounce it because almost all kanji have numerous pronunciations and he wouldn't have had a clue which ones to use.

Second, there are three Japanese alphabets.  There is hiragana and katagana, which are both composed of 46 basic syllables (each set having different symbols for the same thing) that each represent one sound.  Kanji, as everyone knows, is the 2,000+ alphabet in which each individual symbol represents a word.  Katagana is nowadays used when writing foreign words (so cake is  ケーキ, pronounced keh-ki).  Hiragana is nowadays used in conjugation and sometimes words are spelt just using hiragana (for those who want to know, cake in hiragana is  けいき) . It's the first alphabet any student learns.  But this all started at the turn of the twentieth century.  Long before this, women were only taught how to write in hiragana.  It was the women's language and even most noble ladies were only taught hiragana.  So, while Sesshoumaru isn't surprised at a woman who can write, because many women were actually taught how, he's very surprised at a woman who uses kanji.

** The odd characters Sesshoumaru saw were our numerals.  It's fairly common now for most Japanese to use our numerals instead of the kanji, so that's what I had Kagome do.  Since Sesshoumaru's never seen them, he wouldn't know what they meant.  Also, kanji has been evolving over time, so many of the kanji that Sesshoumaru's familiar with are considered archaic by Kagome's point of view.  At the same time, many kanji that Kagome uses didn't exist in Sengoku Jidai.

I think that's everything.  Please review and argue senselessly with me about my story and author's notes... please?
