The cool night air cut into his cheeks like daggers as he blazed through the forest. He, however, took no heed of it and pressed on. He had to get to her quickly. He now knew that she was in danger, and he needed to save her. She was a powerful warrior in her own right, but she could not stand alone against so many powerful enemies.
He detected that she was nearby, and he skidded to an abrupt stop. The air was filled with the scent of blood… her blood. He had arrived too late. He walked the short distance through the trees, and there she was, lying in a pool of blood. Many piles of ashes littered the ground around her telling him she had downed many of her enemies before she fell. He felt a surge of pride at the thought.
Those who had managed to overcome her had already escaped, leaving her here to die. Rage, intense, blinding rage coursed through him, and he clenched his fist tightly. He could go after them now, but he would not risk leaving her. It was, after all, his own fault she was in this predicament in the first place. He should have never allowed her to leave his side.
He looked down on her, and a flood of memories went through his mind. He remembered the first time he saw her, the first time he saved her. He remembered the tragic events that had brought them together.
He remembered the love in her eyes when she would look at him. Her soft touches and gentle embraces. He remembered her intoxicating scent, which was now marred by the smell of fear and blood. She did not deserve this! She had never harmed a soul in all her life. She did not deserve this, and the ones who have done this to her will pay with their lives.
She was lying motionless on the cold hard ground. He could hear her heart beating, but it was faint, weak and irregular. Her eyes were opened slightly. But, they were, dilated and unfocused. Her beautiful brown eyes.
The same eyes which had held such joy, such hope, determination and… even pain. Yes, he had seen pain there as well. At first he had not been affected by it, or at least that is what he had told himself. But now… now, he would do anything so that he would never have to see her in pain again.
Her breathing was becoming increasingly shallow and labored. She would die soon. His heart clenched at the thought. She would die. But, it was the only way. The only way he could save her, was to first allow her to die. Even he, with his powerful demon blood could not save her any other way. Not this time.
He was…afraid. Afraid he might lose her forever. Fear was a foreign emotion for him, but he could not help but to think, what if Tensega failed him? What would he do if he could not bring her back? The anticipation, and uncertainty was killing him.
A thought accrued to him. He could expedite the process. He could kill her right now, and then use Tensega to bring her back.
He could…and yet he could not. It was not that he had never killed before, that was certainly not the case. But he could not do it, not to her. Perhaps, if she were in intense pain, maybe. But no, she was unconscious, and did not appear to be in any pain. Even if she were, he would have difficulty summoning the will to do such a thing.
He… loved her. He could admit it now. It had taken some time for him to realize it, and even more time to admit it. And even now, he had never uttered the words aloud. He had allowed her to see it in his eyes, and feel it in his gentle touch. He knew how she longed to hear those words, but his pride had not allowed him to utter the simple phrase.
She, of course, had accepted it, had accepted him. She had given her love to him freely, and asked nothing in return, until now. And he, had refused her.
And now, because of his foolish pride she lay dying at his feet. He could only hope that Tensega would work, would do what it was commissioned to do. Would save a life. A human life. But, not just any human, she would be his mate when this was all over. He would see to that.
Never before did he think he would take a human as his bride. He would have even balked at such a notion. But now, he loved her, and no other could ever take her place. He would not live without her, not ever again.
She was his friend, she was his lover. She was all he had left in this world, and more than he ever deserved. She was…his Kagome.
